Workers given OK for overnight stay in Fukushima

Japan's central government has decided that under certain conditions workers will be allowed to stay overnight in some of Fukushima's off-limit areas.

The purpose is to speed up the decontamination process nearly three years since the March 2011 nuclear accident.

The decision applies to areas where residents are currently permitted visit their homes only during the daytime.

The conditions attached to over-night stays stipulate that workers be involved in projects deemed especially indispensable for restoration and revival, and that radiation levels are 20 milli-sieverts or less per year.

Former TEPCO employee seeks donations for downtrodden Fukushima workers

As a former employee of Tokyo Electric Power Co., Akihiro Yoshikawa says he knows about the miserable conditions, declining morale and how workers are treated like garbage at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

His mission now is to spread awareness of the circumstances surrounding those struggling to deal with the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant and to help them get through the winter.

“I wanted to get people thinking about their working environment and do something to improve it,” Yoshikawa, 33, said.

Yoshikawa and his friends are now collecting donations to deliver heat packs and long underwear to the workers.

Frozen food maker recalling 6 million packages over pesticide concerns

A frozen food producer is recalling up to 6.3 million packages possibly tainted with pesticide after customers complained of strange odors emanating from the products.

Officials of Maruha Nichiro Holdings Inc., the nation’s largest seafood processing company, said Dec. 29 that products produced by a subsidiary were found with malathion, a pesticide of relatively low human toxicity that is not carcinogenic.

The frozen food was produced by Aqli Foods Corp. at its plant in Oizumi, Gunma Prefecture.

Maruha Nichiro is recalling all products from the Gunma plant that are currently on the market and looking into how the pesticide was mixed into the food.

Japan population shrank at fastest pace since WWII

Japan's population shrank last year at its fastest pace since the end of World War Two. This marks the 7th straight year of decline.

A health ministry survey shows that one million 31 thousand babies were born in 2013. That's down 6 thousand from the previous year and the fewest since the end of the war.

The estimate also shows one million 275 thousand people died last year. That's an increase of 19 thousand from the year before and the most after the war.

These figures show Japan's population dropped by 244 thousand last year.

Dairy farmer records changes to his Fukushima village

DATE, Fukushima Prefecture--Kenichi Hasegawa’s home videos and photos do not contain the usual fare. They show cows heading for slaughter, villagers bidding farewell, and men in protective suits roaming the village.

Hasegawa said he bought a single-lens reflex camera and a camcorder immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami triggered the accident at the nearby Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in March 2011.

“I have to keep records for the sake of posterity,” said Hasegawa, a 60-year-old dairy farmer.

His home village of Iitate in this northeastern prefecture was once filled with edible wild plants in spring, mushrooms in autumn and wild boar hunts in winter.

But that peaceful life in the mountains came to an abrupt end when the nuclear accident spewed radioactive substances over the village.

Eight members of four generations in Hasegawa’s family once lived together. They are now separated in four households.

Fukushima Govt. & Fukushima Medical University Signed Secrecy Pact With IAEA

Tokyo Shimbun is reporting the results of their investigation into the dealings of the Fukushima prefecture government, the medical university and the IAEA. There has been ongoing suspicion about the openness and honesty of what has been ongoing in Japan. Tokyo Shimbun has confirmed that these government entities did sign a secrecy agreement with the IAEA. The Fukushima Medical University has been the main source of all public data on exposure and had been dictating what medical care many in the region were allowed to receive related to radiation issues.

Both the prefecture and the medical university have been the subject of growing distrust from the public due to their efforts to downplay problems and withhold information from the public. Tokyo Shimbun’s work has confirmed this problem to be the case. A machine translation of the article is below.

San Francisco County Health measured radiation 5 times the normal amount.

"County health officials first learned of the radiation levels last week, and they sent their own inspector on Dec. 28 to Pacifica with a Geiger counter. Using a different unit, the county inspector measured the beach to have a radiation level of about 100 micro-REM per hour, or about five times the normal amount. REM stands for “Roentgen equivalent man,” a measurement of the dosage and statistical biological effects presented by radiation.
Although the radiation levels were clearly higher than is typical, Peterson emphasized that it was still not unsafe for humans. A person would need to be exposed to 100 microREMs of radiation for 50,000 hours before it surpassed safety guidelines by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, he explained."

Iran wants Japan to help build nuclear plants

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi says Iran's leaders want Japan to help build more nuclear plants in their country.

Araqchi spoke with NHK in Tehran on Sunday. He said he believes Iran and Japan can work together to build facilities that generate electricity.

He said Japanese leaders are aware of the idea, and it will become one of the key issues linking the two countries.

Information hacked from Monju reactor control room

The operator of the Monju fast-breeder reactor on the Sea of Japan coast says computer hackers may have stolen data on internal e-mails and training records.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency says it found that one of the 8 computers in the central control room had been illegally accessed more than 30 times from a South Korean website after an employee updated free software on the PC last Thursday.

Agency officials say about 42,000 inter-office e-mails and staff training reports were stored in the computer.

USS Calhoun County sailors dumped thousands of tons of radioactive waste into ocean

They asked the dying Pasco County man about his Navy service a half-century before. He kept talking about the steel barrels. They haunted him, sea monsters plaguing an old sailor.

"We turned off all the lights," George Albernaz testified at a 2005 Department of Veterans Affairs hearing, "and … pretend that we were broken down and … we would take these barrels and having only steel-toed shoes … no protection gear, and proceed to roll these barrels into the ocean, 300 barrels at a trip."

Not all of them sank. A few pushed back against the frothing ocean, bobbing in the waves like a drowning man. Then shots would ring out from a sailor with a rifle at the fantail. And the sea would claim the bullet-riddled drum.

It wasn't long before Albernaz began keeping a different kind of diary. He titled this new log "Nuclear Waste Dumping Diary."

Jan. 20 1957: "371 tons atomic waste."

Feb. 7, 1957: "368 tons atom waste."

Nov. 13, 1957: "299 (tons) poison gas (and) A.W."

One of Albernaz's last entries was on June 12, 1958: "200 tons. Spec. weapons," or special weapons. That was the day, Albernaz later told his wife, that he helped dispose of an atomic bomb.

The Calhoun County sailed out of Norfolk, Va. with two giant crates. The ship's log noted it dumped "confidential material" at 2:31 a.m.

Albernaz's wife said he told her about that trip. He said the crew was told the crates contained two atomic bombs. Other sailors interviewed said the occasional dumping of disassembled atomic bombs occurred several times in its history.

Why does Saudi Arabia need nuclear power?

Saudi Arabia – known for its massive oil resources – is making a serious push for a different kind of energy: Nuclear power.

Last week the country signed a deal with France's AREVA and EDF on a series of initiatives aimed at supporting Saudi Arabia's nuclear energy program.

Japan is also preparing a nuclear power pact with the Saudi Kingdom. The deal would allow Japanese businesses to export atomic-related infrastructure to the country, as reported by Japan Times.

Saudi Arabia officially started looking into nuclear power in 2006. Along with the other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) – Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman – the oil-rich nation led an investigation into the possibility of a nuclear power and desalination program.

According to the World Nuclear Association, Saudi Arabia plans on building 16 nuclear power reactors over the next 20 years, with the first scheduled to come on line in 2022.

So why does the world's second-biggest oil producer need nuclear power?

UK regulators take ABWR to next level

UK regulators are ready to begin the second phase of the generic design assessment (GDA) process for Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy's Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR). At the same time, the company is inviting public comments on the reactor design.

The decision to proceed to the second stage of the four-stage GDA process comes after nine months of preparatory work by Hitachi-GE and the three regulatory bodies undertaking the GDA (the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales). As its name implies, the process is not tied to any specific development, although Horizon Nuclear Power is currently proposing to build ABWR units at Wylfa Newydd in Wales and at Oldbury-on-Severn in south-western England.
