Fukushima Plutonium Effect and Blow-Up Regimes in Neutron-Multiplying Media

ABSTRACT
It is shown that the capture and fission cross-sections of 238U and 239Pu increase with temperature within 1000 K - 3000 K range, in contrast to those of 235U, that under certain conditions may lead to the so-called blow-up modes, stimulating the anomalous neutron flux and nuclear fuel temperature growth. Some features of the blow-up regimes in neutronmultiplying media are discussed.

TEPCO Apologizes to #Fukushima I NPP Subcontractors and Explains, "Additional Risk Benefit of 10,000 Yen (US$96) a Day Doesn't Mean Additional Risk Benefit of 10,000 Yen a Day"

Uh... what does that mean, you may ask?

And why is TEPCO apologizing? Because, apparently, TEPCO's announcement that the company would double the risk benefit for the workers hired by the subcontractors to work at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant from 10,000 yen a day to 20,000 yen a day has caused anxiety and confusion among TEPCO's primary contractors and subcontractors.

Why are TEPCO's primary contractors (1st tier) and subcontractors (and subcontractors of the subcontractors... to the nth degree) anxious and confused? Because the workers they hire now knows how much TEPCO is paying the primary contractors and can compare it to what they actually receive.

Safety check application for Rokkasho plant filed

The operator of a spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho Village in northeastern Japan has applied for a government safety assessment.

However, it's not clear how much time the safety screening will take. And there's no clear prospect that the plant will be able to operate on a full-scale basis.

Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited Vice President Kazuhiro Matsumura filed the application on Tuesday with the Nuclear Regulation Authority.

28 Japanese confirmed with asbestos injuries after work at U.S. bases

A total of 28 Japanese workers were officially recognized as having become sick from inhaling asbestos while laboring at U.S. military bases in Okinawa Prefecture, with 21 of them already dead, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry data showed Tuesday.

Over 350 reported sick after eating pesticide-tainted food

TOKYO — More than 350 people across Japan have fallen ill after eating pesticide-contaminated frozen food produced by the nation’s largest seafood firm, national broadcaster NHK said Tuesday.

A prefectural health official said Tuesday that concentration of the pesticide in a coating of frozen croquette was 26,000 parts per million, which is 2.6 million times the limit set for pesticide residue under government health regulations.

Record number of foreigners visited Japan in 2013

A record number of foreigners visited Japan last year, topping 10 million for the first time. That was due mainly to the weak yen, as well as the easing of visa requirements for Southeast Asians.

The Justice Ministry says 11.25 million foreigners entered Japan in 2013. This is up 2.08 million, or 22.7 percent, from the previous year and the highest figure since the ministry began collecting data in 1950.

Fuel meltdown experiment eyed to learn more about Fukushima crisis

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency is planning to melt a small nuclear fuel rod in an experiment at its research facility in March to figure out how meltdowns occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011, officials said Thursday.

More about the "controlled" meltdown...

Workers will place a fuel rod about a foot long inside of a stainless steel enclosure, which will prevent cooling water from coming in contact with the rod.
Additional fuel rods will then surround the capsule, releasing neutrons which will cause the test rod to melt once temperatures rise high enough.

Workers will record temperature, pressure, and water level information from the test. They will also place a camera in the capsule to record the melting process.

Once the fuel rod melts down the operators will allow the fission process to cease, and allow the molten materials to return to a solid state. Once solidified the fuel can be analyzed.

After the experiment the solidified fuel will be stored in a spent fuel pool.

Its probably time for all of us to start some serious treatment therapies.

Cesium and strontium were the dangerous isotopes released in quantity by Fukushima. Pectin-based radiation therapy was researched and developed by EU to treat Chernobyl's victims. [link to www.vitapect.org] is the product the EU developed, based on pectin. It's a patent pending process to bind to and remove heavy metals and isotopes and replenish minerals and vitamins. The result: 63% of cesium removed according to independent studies in the Swiss Medical Journal.

Sodium alginate looks good for removing Strontium. It leaches the Strontium from the bones.

The above two should be in every house on the west coast.

You got it. There's nothing to be done about this disaster. We have to focus on the cures out there for cancer. That is what the focus needs to be on now. Its too late to fix fukushima.

TEPCO restarts water treatment system at Fukushima

Tokyo Electric Power Company has restarted a system to treat radioactive wastewater at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

TEPCO put the ALPS system back online on Friday.
A crane to transfer containers that store removed radioactive materials had stopped working on Tuesday.

One of the crane's 4 motors had broken down, but the utility confirmed that the crane works with just the remaining motors.

Removal of nuclear fuel at Fukushima plant resumes after holiday break

FUKUSHIMA--Work to remove nuclear fuel from a damaged reactor building at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant was proceeding smoothly as efforts resumed Jan. 6 after the conclusion of the New Year's holidays.

Work initially got under way on Nov. 18 at the storage pool of the damaged No. 4 reactor building to remove 1,533 nuclear fuel assemblies, but was suspended Dec. 22 for the holiday period.

Radiation levels near Fukushima plant boundary 8 times the government standard

Radiation levels around the boundary of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant have risen to eight times the government standard of 1 millisievert per year, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority is scheduled to hold a meeting Jan. 10 to discuss countermeasures for a southern area on the plant site that has long been a source of problems.

A level of 8 millisieverts per year was estimated as of December near an area with many storage tanks containing highly radioactive water, company officials said.

TEPCO withheld Fukushima radioactive water measurements for 6 months

Tokyo Electric Power Co. has withheld 140 measurements of radioactive strontium levels taken in groundwater and the port of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant between June and November last year.

Company officials on Jan. 8 insisted the utility had no intention to conceal information. They said they did not disclose the data simply because of inconsistencies in the information.

Chernobyl ventilation stack removed

An old ventilation stack shared by units 3 and 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has been dismantled. Its removal will allow a giant protective structure to be installed over the damaged reactor building in Ukraine.

Work to remove the 75.5-metre tall stack began on 31 October 2013. Sitting on the roof of the damaged unit 4, the top of the 9-metre diameter stack was 150 metres above ground level. It comprised seven sections weighing a combined 330 tonnes, with each section weighing between 25 and 60 tonnes.

Jamaica reveals information about contamination on used cars from Japan

In November 2012, a minibus imported from Japan by a used-car dealer in Jamaica was scanned and found to have radiation levels which required it to be moved to a quarantined area.

In December of 2013, a shipping container containing used car parts destined for Guyana was also found to have elevated levels of radiation. It too was transferred to a quarantined area for protection.

Both shipments will be returned to Japan shortly.

Ice puts Fort Calhoun nuclear plant temporarily offline

OMAHA, Neb. —Because of severe winter weather conditions, the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant has been temporary shutdown.

Omaha Public Power District said in a release that the sub-freezing temperatures caused an ice build-up on one of six sluice gates in the plant's Missouri River water-intake structure.

SAINT LUCIE: UNUSUAL EVENT DECLARED DUE TO SEVERE RAIN STORM

On January 9, 2014 St. Lucie Unit 1 declared an Unusual Event based on a severe rain storm, a natural occurrence affecting the Protected Area. Specifically, visual sightings by station personnel that water levels are approaching storm drain system capacity. Countermeasures are being deployed and are currently operating satisfactorily. Both units continue to operate at full power. All safety systems remain available.

ROBINSON: AUTOMATIC REACTOR TRIP DUE TO TURBINE TRIP

At 2234 hours EST on 01/09/2014, with the unit in Mode 1 at 100% power, an automatic reactor trip occurred. At the time of the event, Steam Generator Water level Protection Channel Testing was in progress. While testing was in progress with the 'C' Steam Generator Channel 1 Water Level Protection channel in trip for testing, a Turbine Trip occurred. The cause of the Turbine Trip is under investigation.
