Ukraine, 16 Nuclear Reactors in a State of Turmoil

Yesterday’s events in Kiev and Ukrainian regions leave no other choice for U.S. and Russia, as the guarantors of territorial integrity and stability of this state, except bringing their troops into the territory of Ukraine. They have no other chance to provide security for the nuclear sites in Ukraine and first of all for the largest in Europe Zaporozhskaya nuclear power plant.

Fukushima I NPP: 23,000,000,000,000 Bq (or 23 Terabecquerels) of All-Beta in 100 Tonnes of Waste Water that Leaked from Top of Storage Tank

According to TEPCO's alert for the press (2/20/2014), there has been a fresh leak of highly contaminated RO (reverse osmosis) waste water at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, the same kind of water that was found leaking in August 2013.

The densities of radionuclides in the highly contaminated water that was found leaking on February 19, 2014 from the top of a tank that stores waste water after reverse osmosis treatment are:

Cesium-134: 3,800 Bq/L
Cesium-137: 9,300 Bq/L
Cobalt-60: 1,800 Bq/L
Manganese-54: 1,300 Bq/L
Antimony-125: 41,000 Bq/L
All-beta: 230,000,000 Bq/L

There are 1,000 liters per tonne, and TEPCO says about 100 tonnes of this water leaked.

So, in the 100 tonnes of water, there are:
23,000,000,000,000 Bq, or 23 terabecquerels of all-beta (including strontium-90)

How did this happen? It was not through some cracks or loose rivets with deteriorating packing this time.

The short answer is: TEPCO let it overflow by negligence.

Second verse same as the first...water is an issue. It can't be stored because it leaks. It should not go into the ocean because of contamination. It's a no win situation.

Storage tanks to be upgraded at Fukushima Daiichi

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant plans to replace almost all of the tanks at the site storing massive amounts of radioactive wastewater.

The tanks are made of steel sheets bolted together. Some of them were leaking last year.

Tokyo Electric Power Company officials said on Tuesday that they will replace 750 of the tanks with new ones that are welded together and are more resistant to leaks.

Issuance of Vogtle loan guarantees

The US government has finalized loan guarantees totalling some $6.5 billion for the construction of two AP1000 units at the Vogtle site in Georgia. US energy secretary Ernest Moniz was today due to formally issue the guarantees.

In February 2010, Vogtle units 3 and 4 became the first new nuclear power plant construction projects to be offered conditional loan guarantees by the US Department of Energy (DoE). The DoE offered one loan guarantee of $3.46 billion to Southern Co subsidiary Georgia Power, which has a 45.7% interest in the two new units, a second one of $3.07 billion covers Oglethorpe Power's 30% share of the project, while a third of $1.8 billion covers Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia's (MEAG's) 22.7% share. The City of Dalton holds the remaining 1.6% share in the new plant.

Officials Confirm Nuclear Waste Leak

UPDATE 7:20p 02/21:

Department of Energy officials say radiation levels detected in and around the nation's only underground nuclear waste repository are consistent with a leak at the southeastern New Mexico facility.

Carlsbad field office manager Jose Franco said Thursday that readings from sensors above and below ground indicate the radiation is coming from waste stored at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. But officials won't know what caused the leak until they can get underground to investigate. That could be weeks.

On Saturday, the DOE announced an underground monitor detected airborne radiation. On Wednesday, an independent monitoring center said it also found evidence of an above ground escape.

Scientists who monitor the nation's only underground nuclear waste repository in Southeastern New Mexico say they’ve detected radiation in the air a half-mile from the site.

AIRLINE ANOMALIES POST FUKUSHIMA: Fukushima triggers unprecedented increase in airline pilot & passenger heart attacks, cancers, radiation illness symptoms. Interview recorded Feb 20th 2014.

The following interview was taped Feb 20th with Alfred Lambremont Weber III of Exopolitics, discussing news stories sourced of airline anomalies since 3/11, including pilots passing out, crews having health issues, planes landing at wrong airports, and related pertinent news stories, including health issues that occurred within my own immediate family during a trip to Cancun last year. In comparing to the available data ie news reports, it would appear we have had a sizeable increase with 6 events in 7 years, vs 17 events in 3 years pre and post Fukushima, respectively. And this is ONLY pilots passing out or having heart attacks in mid-flight.

This interview only posted last night. Already, we are getting email and intel from flight crews, pilots, and others who have recorded geiger readings on flights after listening to this interview. All data will be verified and included as we continue building a timeline of these events in an effort to get flight industry unions to investigate, and appropriately mitigate, on behalf of flight industry workers. It is imperative imo that all members of flight crews be provided immediately with dosimeters and planes outfitted with scintillators. This is a responsibility the industry needs to take to assure the safety of their workers.

Comment on interview from TDL: "To those of you who fly on a regular basis, notice how many 'new crews' there are. Check 'careerpilotcentre' (.com) for many openings for 'type rated' jet pilots. I have experienced really high elevated readings at FL 350-450 (35,000 to 45,000 thousand feet) of anywhere from 40-58 times background levels (38-42 m/sv/h). Most flight crews in Canada are being kept in the dark about this. On many cross Canada flights (Edmonton-Toronto-Halifax) I read these readings on many occasions followed by extreme 'cold sweats'-nausea-extreme swelling in the ankles and fellow passengers generally not feeling well. I experienced high counts from Calgary to Cancun as well. Thanks Radchick."

I am putting together a post on Climate Viewer News, and the entire 25 page FAQ outlining a years worth of data collection can be found in it's entirety at EcologyNews.com.

How TEPCO plans to build an ice wall at Fukushima

TEPCO has announced that it will start operations in March that will enable workers to eventually remove highly-contaminated water in trenches seaside of Fukushima Daiichi unit 2.

Underground trenches for piping and power cables were flooded after the 11 March 2011 tsunami; this water is highly contaminated. A leak in April 2011 between units 2 and 3 from the trench into the Fukushima Daiichi port was stopped with concrete, but may still be leaking into groundwater within the site. Measures have been taken to seal off the trenches from the sea, but given the level of contamination, even a small leak significantly raises the seawater's radioactive inventory.

Working At Fukushima As National Duty?

February 26th, 2014 | Add a Comment

31,383 workers have passed through the gates of Fukushima Daiichi between March 2011 and December 2013. TEPCO has complained of worker shortages already, a workforce will be needed for the next 40 years or more. Yet there has been a constant set of problems for workers and with the system that employs them.

Fukushima Daiichi; Abusing Workers & Avoiding Liability

February 25th, 2014 | Add a Comment

workerExamples of the continued abuse of workers hired to work at the nuclear disaster site continued in the last year. Disadvantaged workers were solicited at train stations. Those who took jobs frequently found themselves with no wages after hiring contractors extracted inflated expenses for food and housing. Some ended up in debt to their hiring contractor.

So much remains undetermined. What exactly will happen at the plant site remains mostly a plan for future work that could take half a century to complete. Today little is confirmed about the actual status inside the reactors. The fate of the evacuation zone and those who called it home remains undecided, suffering from a patchwork of insufficient government initiatives. The larger impact on the environment remains a question as researchers try to gather data to know the total releases from the plant. How it will evolve in the environment will take decades of monitoring to fully understand.

11 Injured At Hanford Nuclear Site

March 26th, 2014 | Add a Comment

11 workers have been hospitalized after a series of unidentified chemical leaks at the site’s aging tank farms. The two workers initially exposed are not recovering as expected. Multiple additional workers were made sick with some at an area 8-10 miles away from the initial incident. Response workers were also sickened when they went to investigate without wearing any protective masks or gear.

Sendai nuclear power plant may get OK in June

The Sendai nuclear power plant in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, is likely to get government safety clearance as early as June, in the first step toward restarting its two reactors.

Officials from the operator of the plant told the Nuclear Regulation Authority, or the NRA, on Thursday that it will present a revised report outlining safety measures it will take for the plant, reflecting advice from the NRA. The operator, Kyushu Electric Power Company, says it will complete the report by the end of April.

The NRA officials said they will start compiling a safety assessment report for the plant, and plan to finish it by the end of May.

The NRA will then set up a 30-day public comment period to invite outsiders to post scientific opinions about whether the plant should be restarted.
