Anyone else noticed the honeycomb pattern?
I've played quite a few video games in my time, and in the last few years I've noticed that many of them have featured a honeycomb pattern rather prominently. The pattern is never mentioned or referenced in any way, but it's always there, just plastered all over the place. Is there a reason so many game companies insist on using this same pattern over and over? Is it just because it looks cool or something?

Not saying there's a sinister conspiracy here or anything, just curious. Some games in which I've seen this pattern include:

Assassins Creed: During the "glitch" scenes.

Halo 3: On the bubble shield, and as the background on the Ark's computers.

Halo Reach: All over the Covenant technology.

Doom 3: During the opening sequence, and as a texture throughout the game.

Crysis: On the players Nanosuit, and on the EA logo.

Crysis 2: Same as above, but also seen constantly throughout the game.

Frontlines: Fuel of War: Usually on the screen during movie scenes.

Transformers: War for Cybertron: Can be seen on the glowing orange patches on all the Autobots. Also covers the player when they pick up an overshield.

Portal: Can be seen all over the room where you fight the final boss.

F.E.A.R.: On the title screen. Didn't see it anywhere else.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Used during the opening credits, and appears as a glowing pattern on the "Big Shell" whenever you take a step at the end of the game.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Appears on all the the Patriot technology.

Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2: Appears all over the Chimeran technology.

Again, not saying it means anything, I just find it odd that so many game designers keep using this pattern. Just curious to hear whether anyone else has noticed this, and what their opinions are.

Hexagons are strong - and will predominate more in the real world as light weight applications of new materials leads to our relying on what bees have known for millions of years.

The honey comb is the strongest design pattern out there.

for Sci-fi type games they are most likely pulling in some real science for the fictional 'stuff' they are building in game.

As for glitch areas and seeing the basic framework of the game, the hex has come to dominate movement patters in games over the squares.

Squares only give you 4 directions to move in, hexes give you six.

That makes sense, most of the games I've noticed this in are Sci-Fi games. I get the feeling that it's a pattern they have to work with themselves while making the game.
