Frequently use external hard drive with MacBook Pro. Has always worked fine. Now, when I plug it up, a prompt screen comes up with three options: initialize, ignore, and something else i don't remember. what's up? how do i fix this? you get a gold star if you can help.

try this

1. Unplug external hard drive from MacBook

2. Boot Disk Utility in MacBook

3. Plug hard drive back in and see if it will let you repair it

4. If that doesn't work, take it to a Mac Genius at the Apple Store.

A lot of times when it is asking to initialize it means there is a problem with the drive. Especially if that drive has been working. Here is a link that will help you understand what is happening and offers some solutions on how to fix it.

DiskWarrior can usually fix it. Tell it to ignore, launch DiskWarrior and repair the disk [link to www.alsoft.com]
If DiskWarrior can't fix it well....
