He said he didn't know enough to say whether or not the report of 150 potential patients was accurate. Spencer said multiple train cars were on fire following the collision, but the fire has been extinguished. It's now a matter of attending to the injured, he said. [link to www.rgj.com] :meisad: |

Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said the department is sending one engine company, two water tenders and on chief officer to the wreck. Dear lord, I hope they get them out safely. That update is about 40 mins. ago. |

Oh wait, I guess it's already out. It's called "Super 8." By the way, save your money. Seriously, I hope for the best of those in the accident. |

How do you stall a tractor-trailer on the RR tracks? |

How did this happen? You can see for miles around you in this part of the country. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1441855Only thing I can guess is that a truck was stalled on the tracks and the AMTRAK train could not stop. How do you stall a tractor-trailer on the RR tracks? Not sure how it happened. It was at the intersection. But you're right....you can see for miles...and HEAR for that matter. Very quiet out there. Strange accident. They've got a couple of Blackhawk helicopters from the Fallon Navel base acting as care-flights to Reno. That's good of them. Two Blackhawk helicopters with passengers on board are on their way to Renown Regional Medical Center, said Kurt Althof, a spokesman with Careflight. The helicopters are landing in Pickett Park, a grassy playground, across Mill Street because they are too large to land on the hospital’s heli-pad, he said. Each helicopter can carry up to five patents, he said, but he did not know how many were on board. [link to www.rgj.com] |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1297860I know, it looks weird. But if you look at the photo at this link... [link to www.rgj.com] You can see people walking away from the front of the train where the hit occurred. The road is down that way. I just wonder if the poor guy in the dump truck was trying to miss the train by speeding.....or asleep at the wheel. That road out there will lull anyone to sleep. |

The railroad crossing involved in Friday’s Amtrak crash has had no accidents reported over the last 20 years, according to the Federal Railroad Safety Administration. Data from the Amtrak train’s “black box,” interviews with passengers and others, inspections of equipment, reviewing communications and examining railroad records will be part of the accident investigation, the agency said. "We were driving along on the train and apparently a truck decided that it was going to run the stop out in the middle of the desert -- nothing out here for miles," Jim Bickley told ABC News. "[It] hit the side of the Amtrak car. It was a coach car with people in it. "My wife and I were in the fourth car, the observation car," he said. "We felt a jolt and a big ball of flames went by the left window with a bunch of black smoke. People yelled. "There was a lot of smoke so we decided to stick our head out of one of the doors and saw the train on fire," Bickley said. [link to abcnews.go.com] |

Remember yesterday on glp there was a post about all the military equipment being moved around the country? One post described what they called an "airplane wing" type of thing on a flatbed. Pic 7 looks like that description. That's a gravel truck - the kind used to drop the rocks used to pave roads. You can see his second trailer in the pic. The fact that the train is burning at the middle doesn't make a lot of sense (unless did the truck ram the middle of the train?) Has to be intentional - even a mental midget knows you can't beat a train when it is already travelling over the crossing...... Yeah, those big, long gravel trucks haul back and forth between Trinity and Fallon. And I suppose crashing into a train brings chance of fire. |
