Lab spokesman Kevin Roark said environmental specialists were monitoring air quality, but the main concern was smoke. The anti-nuclear watchdog group Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety said the fire appeared to be about 3.5 miles (6 kilometers) from a dumpsite where as many as 30,000 55-gallon (208-liter) drums of plutonium-contaminated waste were stored in fabric tents above ground. The group said the drums were awaiting transport to a dump site in southern New Mexico. Lab officials at first declined to confirm that such drums were on the property, but in a statement early Tuesday, lab spokeswoman Lisa Rosendorf said such drums are stored in a section of the complex known as Area G. She said the drums contain cleanup from Cold War-era waste that the lab sends away in weekly shipments to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. Your evidence for the lie is pretty convincing. Unless they moved them? But they didn't ever say that. So they are probably exactly where you point out on the google map, and that area was breached by fire. If it's true that the plutonium waste barrels went up in flames it's HUGE DOOM. BUT maybe the "small fire" they had was only near the barrels and not actually damaging the barrels.... yet. Then it's imminent huge doom... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1447901The Los Alamos website claims that Tech area 49 is located at Area G [link to www.lanl.gov] [link to www.lasg.org] [link to maps.google.com] LOS ALAMOS, N.M., June 4, 1997 — Workers at Los Alamos National Laboratory's Environmental Management Solid Waste Operations Facility -- Area G -- have recovered in near-perfect condition more than 1,500 drums that had been covered by plywood, tarps and soil for nearly 18 years. The drum-recovery work is part of the Transuranic Waste Inspection and Storage Project, or TWISP -- a project in which three soil-covered, asphalt pads containing drums or boxes of transuranic waste materials are being excavated to allow the drums to be inspected, characterized and certified for planned shipment to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, N.M. Workers at Area G are excavating the first pad, which contains 4,816 drums and 88 boxes that typically measure four-by-four-by-eight feet. Because the 55-gallon drums and fiberglass-sealed boxes on all three pads were covered and weren't available for inspection, the New Mexico Environment Department required Area G operators to excavate the drums and boxes and place them in a configuration that would allow people to inspect them regularly. Laboratory officials say 16,641 drums and 187 boxes in all reside on the three pads and will be excavated during TWISP. Workers have excavated nearly 30 percent of the first pad at Area G, located on Mesita Del Buey, a finger-like mesa between Pajarito Canyon and Canada Del Buey. The pad is situated beneath a large, white dome structure erected for the drum-recovery effort. Last Edited by RTS on 06/29/2011 09:29 AM |
RTS (OP) User ID: 1388392 United States 06/29/2011 09:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The existing 63-acre Area G "footprint" has essentially no more room for new disposal pits. If the production of nuclear waste continues, DOE and LANL plan to clear and excavate fresh mesa land for Area G expansion. This expansion, considered imminent in 1993, was delayed by public outcry and is now expected in the 2003-2004 time frame. Expansion could be delayed further if waste minimization continues, or if huge unnecessary programs (both existing and planned) were canceled. Decontamination and demolition of contaminated buildings, however, together with environmental cleanup at LANL (should significant cleanup ever actually occur) will generate very large waste volumes, which could drive a more immediate expansion. At present, nuclear weapons programs are competing with cleanup for the limited remaining pit space in Area G. Tols User ID: 1410244 United States 06/29/2011 10:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thank you for the information you are providing; I think your theory holds more water than you know. My question for you is, why did they bring that "special team" in to monitor the air for plutonium and uranium? Why were they in such as rush to do this yesterday if the "30,000 barrels of plutonium" are where they claim they are? The MSM has already been doing a fantasic job of burying Fukushima and now are in distraction mode concerning Nebraska's nuclear plant. It is already taking on water and leaking out radioactive contamination into the river and yet it is no big deal. Given the information you have provided about Los Alamos, the location of these barrels, and the events which took place yesterday, I have to say you are spot on and we are probably looking a plutonium now riding the jetstream into the Midwest region. Will be keeping up with this thread as this story continues to develope. Keep up the good work :) "If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy"- James Madison "Joining the military does not mean that you will be defending the country. The purpose of the U.S. military should be to defend the United States. Period. Yet, one of the greatest myths ever invented is that the current U.S. military somehow defends our freedoms. First of all, our freedoms are not in danger of being taken away by foreign countries; if they are taken away it will be by our own government. It is not a country making war on us that we need to fear, it is our government making war on the Bill of Rights. And second, how is stationing troops in 150 different regions of the world on hundreds of U.S. military bases defending our freedoms? It is not the purpose of the U.S. military to change regimes, secure the borders of other countries, or spread democracy at gunpoint. The Department of Defense should first and foremost be the Department of Homeland Security."--Laurence Vance-- |
