First smoker found on Carlsberg Ridge - probably July 30, 2003

Scientists from Southampton Oceanography Centre have found evidence of hydrothermal activity in a previously unexplored area of volcanic ridge in the Indian Ocean.
The team aboard the research ship RRS Charles Darwin made the discovery on Wednesday 23 July when they detected a huge plume of smoky water. The pall is thought to be at least 600m thick and over 30km wide.
Dr Bramley Murton, the scientist leading the research cruise, said: “The source of the plume is comparable to a suite of large power stations which continuously churns out vast amounts of heat and smoky water. The energy released could exceed 1000 megawatts.”
Hydrothermal vents occur in areas of sea-floor spreading where volcanic eruptions create new sea floor or ‘ocean crust’. As the molten rock cools and solidifies, water percolates down below the sea floor where it is superheated before gushing out from hot springs or vents at some 300 to 400ºC. The smoky plume comes from iron-rich particles which solidify when the hot, mineral-laden fluids mix with the cold deep-ocean water.
Despite the total darkness and fact that hydrothermal vents are toxic to most living organisms, they typically teem with exotic, specially adapted life forms. Unlike most marine life, the communities of animals found at hydrothermal vents depend on special bacteria that use energy from the chemicals in the water to make organic matter.
Abundant hydrothermal vent life has already been discovered in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In order to find out whether life is also thriving at this Indian Ocean vent, oceanographers hope to return to the Carlsberg Ridge in future with ISIS – SOC’s new deep-diving ROV (remotely operated vehicle).

A powerful earthquake struck the Carlsberg Ridge, in the northern Indian Ocean on 15 July 2003. It had a magnitude of 7.6 and was the strongest earthquake in this general area since 1983.

The earthquake was centred 485 kms NW of Perhos Banhos, B.I.O.T.,
Or 575 kms SE of Hittadu (Hittadi Island), Maldives,
Or 689 kms NW of Simpson Point (Diogo Garcia), B.I.O.T.,
Or 946 kms SSW of Male (Male), Maldives,
Or 1448 kms NNE of Victoria, Seychelles.

Tremors from this submarine earthquake were experienced in many parts of the Maldives. Strong tremors (MM VI) were felt on Feydhoo Island in Addu Atoll in the southern Maldives. Everyone was awakened by the shock and ran outdoors. Doors, windows and in some cases, the roofs of houses rattled violently. Several houses in Addu Atoll developed cracks including the walls of the Feydhoo School. Many residents of the atoll spent the night outdoors. Strong tremors (MM V) were also felt in Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhalu and Fuah Mulah. An eyewitness on Fuah Mulah reported seeing a large mango tree sway back and forth during the earthquake. A few old cracks were also widened by the tremors on Dhaandhoo Island (MM V) in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. Tremors were felt in the capital, Male (MM IV-V) and many residents were woken up. Tremors were also experienced in the Huvadhu and South Huvadhu Atolls for close to two minutes. There are not reports of casualties from the Maldives.

According to an official with the Maldives government, no unsual tides were reported from anywhere in the islands. Focal mechanisms (HRV and CalTech) indicate a strike-slip event. No Indian Ocean-wide tsunami activity is expected due to the mechanism of this event.
The last major earthquake in this immediate area was an M7.7 event on 30th November 1983 and was centred near the island of Diogo Garcia in the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) just to the south of the Maldives. That earthquake generated a small tsunami that was recorded as far as the Seychelles.

Thank you for posting this. I have not found this quake on my usual sites. EMSC, USGS, etc.

I had this area to quake on the 12th although I thought it would be closer to Madagascar. I will have to wait for a repeat symptom and quake to prove it for me.

Since you watch the Earth ridges closely, keep an eye on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge on the 16th or a day on either side. I had very strong symptoms. This should be close to Scotland/Ireland/France in the Biscay Plain area.

as the atlanic undersea ridges spread

the subduction zones in the pacific must relieve the pressure

when the crust is subducted it causes magma to be pushed out in volcanic eruptions

what is causing the atlantic ridge to spread?

is it pressure from the center of the earth?
or pressure from outside the earth?

There are some possibilities for the expansion.

It could be Gamma Ray Bursts coming at us from the center of our galaxy. It could be energy from our sun and the Coronal Mass Ejections bombarding us.

It could be our use of oil and water that is depleting the center of the Earth with it´s needs.

Or it could be something like the selfish and violent actions of so many people.

Or a combination of these and others not thought of.

Something big is happening to the Earth and the more people who take notice and try to figure it out and change their ways and say some much needed prayers for all of us, the better.

We can only do the best we can for each other.

there was a report released a few years ago which said the earth has developed a bulge near the equator

is this also related to pressure on the atlantic ridge?

Close enough! Its the 17th and a moderate one to hit Central..

I do look at the Mid Atlantic Ridge to have a big one soon as well...
