I used to get it badly as a young person. Late teens and early twenties was first bout, and it was intermittent. Second bout is now. The difference between then and now is that I'm married with kids. Before, it may have lasted all night, but my body would give in to sheer exhaustion and allow me to sleep eventually. I could also skip class, and had no responsibilities. Now, there is no escaping it whatsoever. I don't sleep, too bad for me. Short of taking meds from a doc, which I'm really not interested in doing. It leads to debilitating insomnia. Before the medical know-it-alls start asking questions...yes, it has happened with me being a daily exerciser. Yes, it has happened with me eating extremely healthy. Yes, I do have quite a bit of stress in my life. No, so far as I know, I do not have poor circulation. No, I am not habitually depressed. I am on no other medications, either. No, I will not smoke pot or drink booze as a remedy, nor do I have a desire for valium or anything of the like, but it's getting close to the point that I would try the valium. CALCIUM MAGNESIUM DRINK. AKA: CALMAG. WORKS FOR ME EVERY TIME. CHUG DOWN A COUPLE OF GULPS AND YOU'LL SEE. |

Many drs. will run different iron tests and tell you you're ok. The ferritin test measures the level of a protein in the blood that stores iron for later use by the body. My RLS devastated my life for 6 years while my dr. told me my iron levels were "fine". I had to find a dr. that would agree to test ferritin, and after about 10 mos. of iron therapy (would highly recommend the liquid, expensive kind if you can afford, I couldn't, and the cheap iron pills are like eating old ground up battleships...) my ferritin level went from 12 to 96 and my RLS went away. Still have slight PLMD but can cope. Beware the arrogance of doctors!!! |

Yes, 99.9% are mineral deficiencies, usually Magnesium, which is really low in the modern diet. If I skip my magnesium during the day, I WILL HAVE RESTLESs legs during the night. I took a drug or 3 or 4 years for the problem until an alert doctor who knew this stuff, ran my magnesium. I had an immediately CURE, but the getting off the drug was NOT fun. Long period of withdrawal. |

Sometimes the restlessness extends to my arms and upper torso, and just makes me itch all over. A good 32 ounces of water before bed will cause you to have to get up and use the bathroom, but it's much better than being awake while you wait to go. Then, drink as much water as you can the next day...LOTS... catch your body up a bit, and I'll bet you don't have that problem again....so long as you maintain hydration. |

I know a masseur that see's clients with it and he literally has to walk on thier legs to get the circulation back in the cellular lever...in other words what he believes is that the legs are dying while you are alive a fate worse than death. No cure, but Clonodine (which is a blood pressure medicine that helps with sleep) will knock it out for some reason. Oddly, I discovered it by accident and found a friend who discovered the same thing! Really weird because neither of us knew the other took Clonodine. Anyway, it's like $4 a month on most generic pharmacy lists. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1456443 ![]() 07/27/2011 06:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Try magnesium. Deficiency supposedly causes restless legs. Quoting: teacupIt isn't just restless legs. That is only a symptom of something not a something in and of itself. Do you drink alcohol? Do you urinate a lot and not replace the fluids. Are you deficient in the B complex and Magnesium. (you may be and not know it. Are you deficient in Vit. D-3 Have you been out side in the hot sun working all day (getting over heated) and sweating up a storm? Be your own best friend and research this. I get it from time to time and am reminded that I need either more water,,,,,,have lost too much water,,,,have overworked my calf muscles or have for some reason become depleted in vitamins. When I rectify the above the legs quite back down. Best of luck in finding your answer and you will if you study. |

Now, the only thing that helps me is naproxin sodium. However, I will try some of the suggestions given here as I really hate to take medications of any type, but man it sucks not being able to sleep. |
