Resources stretched in NE Iowa and NW Illinois....
Just as the title says...

We lost television, phone, internet here for a couple hours (not sure why).

There is a train derailment north of town along IL 84. 30+ cars off track. Believed to be a result of the flooding, but no visual confirmation available because it is closed.

Listening to my scanner (just bought it in light of the loss of primary communications) they are stretched thin over in Iowa. They are trying to use several engines to clear alternate routes for trains to get to. As of right now, they are clearing space in Clinton for some of the idle cars here in Savanna that are able to be gotten to.

Law enforcement in general is taxed. Many are being used as eyes to keep look on water levels. The dike/berm that seperated the flood waters of the Plum River from the lower area of town here in Savanna has officially been breached. There is water underneath the viaduct bridge that leads south out of town, and the bridge that goes over the Plum River on the south edge of town is closed. In addition, there is fear of the dam at Lake Carroll of being topped. Last year they let the little spill way do it's job...this time, there are larger fears of a bigger problem.

They had to take down a big guy just down the hill from me, in the gas station/McDonald's parking lot. Apparently he was stopped on suspicion of drunk driving...and proceeded to flip his shit when asked to take a field sobriety test. He punched out all of his window previously nice looking late 90's model Chevy Monte Carlo. Then he decided it was a good idea to start chasing down a passing car and cursing it out. This led to him being tasered.

Over in Iowa, there are several disputes in some of the smaller towns that do not have a police officer, or rely on a neighboring town's or county officers. As of the last bit of chatter....only two officers available to respond to 4 calls, and one is occupied with a traffic stop.

I called my dad out in Omaha to give him a heads up that non U.P. trains will probably need to utilize their rail, so be prepared for a logistical nightmare.

We've organized further measures being enacted at the store to provide and residents and emergency personnel access to water. The gas station has further contigencies in line for fluids for both civilians and emergency personnel.

I have plans in place to evac my grandmother from her location (lower part of town) and have her stay here, or transport her to my mother's in Iowa (so as long as the remaining path to Iowa is not closed off). I also have plans drawn up to move my family to my mother's in Iowa if such a need arises and it is in the best interest of their safety. I would return here to town to lead the store (the store manager is more than likely watered trapped in his town) and it may be quite difficult for the assistant store manager to get to the store.

I hope that anybody in the impacted area has contigency plans made, to cover water, and shelter. I wish everybody in the entire tri-state area well, and hope that mother nature takes it easy on anybody in any other areas impacted by harsh weather.
I'm just a figment of your imagination ;-)

UP goes thru our town right now, about 100 trains a day, so that will increase rail traffic even more. As it is, there are times when cars are sitting at crossings up to 30 min. at a time waiting for the trains to clear the crossing.

We have a viaduct in which we can go under the tracks BUT there is a bunch of road construction going on in that area & its hard to get to right now.

You okay up your way?

People forget the fact that they have the ability to put aside differences, and work towards a common goal....until negative situations like this happen. It doesn't matter if you're white, african american, italian, asian, korean, hispanic, purple polka-dotted, or otherwise. When the chips are down, and people are hurting....I got all of their backs.

Of course, with the usual caveat that if you try to cause harm or severely screw those over whom are in need, you're likely to catch an earful, if not a boot in the ass. That way the men and women that put the b.s. aside can get back to doing what they came to do, instead of having to deal with somebody that tried to take advantage of a bad situation. And I can go back to trying to fulfill my responsibilities as a husband, father, man, and a member of the social fabric that is bent on stopping shit from falling to pieces, so as long as I can.

You take care, and remain safe. My best wishes go to you, your family, and all of the folks. hf

BTW: Sorry for the late post. Went down to the store to make sure 3rd shift was okay, picked up a few groceries and some more water (saving the filter for when shtf) and made sure there were plenty of pallets of water and gatorade down off of the steel in the instance that a boil order is enacted.

We're ok here, it would take a flood of biblical proportions for water to get this high.
