I'm Confused.
When i was going through the big D me and my kid's had snap..We of coarse do eat healthy and 100% needed the help at that time, but when u checked out the computer system put an X (non-food idem) or a F (food idem) on the product's (some receipt's dont say it next to product's-but the snap program has a process it goes through to determine what your buying) and if their is something that isn't food it will cover the food idems but total up the rest so you may pay with cash. snap won't even pay for energy drink's.
But with all that being said, how come they can't monitor through that same X/F system what people are buying with the cash they have?

not everyone is a system lush..but i do agree their are some bad apples..just like with every thing else in the world.

Re: People use FOOD STAMP CARDS for food & their cash for CIGARETTES, ALCOHOL & LOTTERY

I used to work at a gas station when I just moved back to the east coast from California. I lived in a lower/middle class neighborhood. Nearly EVERY customer who came in to buy junk food (honey buns, doritos, donuts, etc) would drop a &20 or a $50 and in one case I remember a &100 dollar bill, and purchase Lottery tickets, cigarettes & cases of beer.

I began wondering...why the hell are these people using my tax money to buy unhealthy junk food and using their cash to buy what I would consider privileges?

People would come in and complain about the price of gas and health insurance. If you didn't spend your money on cigarettes, lottery, scratch tickets and alcohol you'd HAVE money for gas and health insurance.

I worked out the numbers.

The average cost of a pack of cigarettes across america right now is $5.65

if you smoke a pack a day that's $150.00 a month you spend on something that can kill you. The case of bud light at the store I worked at was about $14.00 for a 12 pack. If you buy even two a week thats around another $100.00 a month. Lottery and megabucks is unpredictable, but if your gambling with your cash you have a serious problem anyway.

anyway my point, is that it's not that prices are high or that the rich are greedy, it's that the poor are more often than not STUPID with their money. With $300-$400 a months you'd save by not drinking, smoking & gambling you would have plenty of money for a gym membership, the best health insurance money can buy and still have some left over to put towards other bills.

I'm sick of this. I see people doing this shit everyday and pisses me off!

It's not a matter of the rich keeping poor people down, it's the poor needing to sacrifice their addictions & cravings of luxury consumption. You can't afford it don't buy it.

Not to mention if you didn't drink and smoke so dam much you wouldn't have to complain about the cost of health care because you'd be a whole lot healthier. Not to mention if you're going to buy food with my taxes can you at least buy healthy food? Salads, fruits, vegetables etc? Instead of potato chips and donuts?

My two cents.
 Quoting: Apotheosis

seems like the only difference between rich and poor people is that rich people can AFFORD their addictions, the best insurance money can buy and gym memberships.

sure there is still some slight semblance of a middle class that can still afford ciggarettes and gym memberships...or doritos...lol but those are people that have GOOD jobs also, and not all people on welfare refuse to have good jobs, in many cities there just aren't really jobs to be had.

so don't act like rich people got rich by not giving in to their addictions. SOME rich people worked very hard for what they have, and maybe even MANY poor people made such awful choices they 'deserve' or 'brought on' their misery/poverty....

but it really has nothing to do with the menial things you mention them spending their money on. people are people--and even poor people gotta have vices, maybe more so, its a hard life being poor and while you sit and judge you can have no IDEA how or why someone is in a position for someone a ignorant and silly as yourself to feel a right to judge them.

good day, sir.

Ok Alice, I'll play one more time. Internet tough guys like you are not even a little scary. You have to throw in that you have pits because you are scared, your confidence is rocked, and you had to say something tough to get your self esteem back up. Please continue with talk like this, it's will probably be the funniest thing I see today. "Have me for dinner"? Wow, so very intimidating in an internet chat room! Once again, small penis and low self esteem. Try therapy.....or maybe try to get laid some time.

thats food stamps. and hey, i don't get not selling energy drinks---they have vitamins!!! :D lol

but with welfare/cash assistance, whatever they call it in your area--you can take money out of the atm or use it like a debit card and get whatever your little heart desires.
though i will be honest, ATM i am on public assistance and it doesn't pay for my bills. like, not even by a long shot. i spend all my time 'working' for this welfare to work program, so even if there were jobs, i can't really go get one, i'm stuck working for less than minimum wage, doesn't even pay my bills or buy groceries for myself and two kids for the whole month and i DO buy healthy--which is actually part of the PROBLEM with the money not lasting, sadly.

so its easy to judge for others, i guess, because they don't know anything but that 'that person is stealing my money for doritos' *fucking laughable* considering the bank bailouts and especially considering that the bank bailouts are only the tip of the iceberg in regards to the massive ass raping being done to main street right now, all the while they point the fingers at each other like retards. viva america. hahahahahaha

I just got back from the grocery store not 30 minutes ago and was fuming over the same thing. Fat-ass woman (and I'm talking 300+ lb) was checking out with junk food and used an EBT card. Then, paid cash for her beer. It just irks me to no end. And, on top of that, we all know the 3 kids she had with her are on the free-lunch program at school. Not sure about all places in the US, but here, some of the schools are open in the summer to serve lunch to the ones on the program. Then, they get a backpack of food to bring home for the weekend. I just don't get it. People say "food stamps are so the kids won't go hungry," but that is BS when the government is still feeding them once or twice per day.

Wow! Lots of views and opinions here. Just going to add my 2 cents... :)
It would be great if the welfare program were over-hauled...in a beneficial way that would help everyone. I think they have done something similar before adding limits to what food stamps could buy and shortening the time one could be on welfare...but I don't think that is enough.

I just think more importantly an education type program is what is needed to help a lot of these people. Make it mandatory for them to do this. Make them attend classes if they are going to be on welfare over a certain period of time...Help them to help themselves! A way to devise plans and goals for these people...A lot of these people do not have the education they need to make responsible choices. Some do, yes but a lot do not...they slipped through the system.
This program may cost extra money at first to pay for guidance/teachers..but over time it could pay for itself.
Education is key imo in helping the situation and also helping people to prevent situations that could find them in this predicament. All could benefit from education.
But to take the rights away from people to purchase what they want to with their limited amt of money...I don't think would be the right way to go about it...there are already restrictions in place for them....maybe not enough but that is not for me to judge...I say get to the root of the problem and not treat the symptoms only.

they already do that and its a scam to take MORE tax payers money and basically keeping these people jobless and unskilled.

there are other ideas than what is in place....and maybe they could be explored if the economy weren't like, imploding more every day. if we get out of THIS financial crisis we are in then we should definitely redesign the whole welfare system.

as it is it would nearly be better to just cut it completely and let everything land as it may....chaotic at first but probably the shitheads will kill each other off. sure there would be innocent bystanders getting caught up in the chaos...maybe die. but with how everyone SEEMS to feel about how the wicked poor people are stealing from them whats a few innocent dead people, eh? /sarcasm.

A sin is a sin, but these poor people rubbing two nickles together, trying to find advantages with what they've got to work with, makes for the lesser of two evils compared with their rich counterparts that pull off multi-million/billion dollar white collar crimes.

Its STILL a social caste system, even into the new millenium. Ultimately its that way because of the superimposed selfishness social game. The haves and the have-nots.

You ugly sob's think these poor overweight people aren't feeling marked by accepting the assitance? Eating that junk food and using alcohol is likely one of the few happy moments they've got over the course of a weeks time.

Stop it right now! Stop thinking that giving poor people vouchers (essentially the outcast people) that need the help is the root cause of why the economy is where its at!

If you continue to do so, I invite the universe to smack you on the ass in some really hurtful way.

With $300-$400 a months you'd save by not drinking, smoking & gambling you would have plenty of money for a gym membership, the best health insurance money can buy and still have some left over to put towards other bills.

What baffles me, is how soooo many people in America are so dang FAT, obese, huge, and yet, there are no jobs, no money? Is everyone eating donuts and chips, everyone? I cannot believe how many I see, everywhere. 50 years ago it was not like that at all. I think it's just plain disgusting.

when I was a teenager, my sister was on food stamps. I would steal them and give them to the little black boys in the neighborhood. I would have them buy a .25 candy bar and bring me the change. They got to keep the candy bar. I got the change to play video games.

So now you're talking bullets and nooses.

These people on the dole are not the advantageous users in the system, they're the victims.

You go on about entitled whores and the ethics of being charitable like you're standing in rightful judgement when God knows better!

It is your entitled lifestyle you don't want to lose, and instead of blaming the top 2% that raped the world economy, you're doing exactly like they thought you might.. you're kicking around the poor, blaming them for your plight.

Rise up and be better than that!

Stupid mother fuckers like you need to be shot.

You are complaining about the measly food stamp program when it's the GOVERNMENT's job to waste money. Waste it on weapons that are never used, ships that never sail and planes that never fly.

Waste it on foreign aid for country's that don't do shit for us in return. Waste it on corporate bailout's so the CEO's can lay off more employees and give themselves bonuses while flying in private jets.

Yet you are complaining about people abusing their food stamps.

Kindly kill yourself now please, you dumb ass, football watching, limbaugh listening to, beer drinking fox news junky. Just do the world a favor and walk into moving interstate traffic.

Re: People use FOOD STAMP CARDS for food & their cash for CIGARETTES, ALCOHOL & LOTTERY
and one of the quotes from the docu. i just saw was something along the lines of: social programs are not a cure for poverty....JOBS are a cure for poverty.

maybe instead of giving these people 'free' benefits---or making them work for less than minimum wage for their benefits---place them in jobs or something. even if the jobs had to be MADE--considering at least half of people on welfare wouldn't TAKE one of their jobs (and would not get social service either)--the gov't and tax payers would end up SAVING money and of course those people would probably eventually get different jobs in the private sector.

and those that choose not to take one of those jobs should just be left destitute...and their kids taken away from them.

i know people who abuse welfare and truly need it........
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1458016

Nice idea but it's kind of hard when corporations are laying off employees, moving factorys and jobs to other country's.

We are not gaining jobs, we are losing jobs, as the gap between the rich and the poor increases each day.

The town I used to grow up in was a thriving town. In the 80's it was bustling with activity for a small town.

There was a denim factory that most everyone in the town worked for. You could ride your bike all over town without fear of being mugged. Everyone knew each other and each year the town roads were shut off for a town celebration.

Now the factory has been closed and moved to mexico. The town is dead. Anyone with half a brain left, they have deserted houses left and right, absolutely no job's whatsoever.

This is what happens with a so called "free market system"

Unregulated corporations can do whatever they want regardless of the consequence to the common man.
