Suffolk Cops Arrest TV Cameraman at Crime Scene [Video]

Screen shot from video of Suffolk Police arresting cameraman

Suffolk County police arrested a cameraman for Stringer News Service in Bohemia on Friday night after he was told repeatedly by an officer to “go away” and stop recording the scene of a police chase.

SNIP

The cameraman, Phil Datz, was standing on the sidewalk of Sycamore Avenue in Bohemia, video taping the end of a police chase, when a Fifth Precinct police officer told him to “just go away.”

“Where do you want me to go?” asked Datz.

I don’t care where you go, go away,” said the officer, who later warned Datz that he would “get locked up” if he continued to argue with him.

The cameraman asked the officer if he should call Suffolk County police’s public information office, and the officer responded by saying: “You can call the commissioner for all I care, you’re going away.”

I’ve been doing this for 30 years,” the officer said, “there’s nothing you can hold over my head or anybody out there, go away.”

Because that's the news cameraman's job. He had an assignment, just like the cops have an assignment. But I can understand the cop's point of view also due to all the lawsuits brought up from the victims, especially if they're black. Heard of Rodney King? I can also understand the Cameraman's point of view, he doesn't want to get fired for not trying. What can you do?

Mouth off like that and you'll end up black and blue. That pig would smash you in the face for challenging his authority, and then you'd be booked for a myriad of bullshit charges. You might beat the wrap in the end, but you'll be out a whole bunch of time and money.

The time where you'll need only travel in armed groups and fire upon uniforms on sight is coming.

The police think they're invincible. Last I checked "30 years" of experience doesn't make one immune to being shot to death by a citizen standing his ground (or seeking justice later using the element of surprise.)

This cycle is nowhere near bottoming out yet.

Re: Cops Illegally Arrest News Cameraman Filming Chase
I live about 20 mins from where this happened.. all I can do is shake my head. Suffolk Police is one of the most overpaid police departments and they do nothing. A few days ago I was at a beach nearby, near the dune watching the sunset with a friend. These kids came by, walked up the dune, then like 10 minuets later came back down with a cop yelling at them saying 'GET DOWN'. The kids got down, then he started yelling at my friend and I. "GET OFF THE DUNE".. we yelled "We're on the beach", he yelled "LEAVE NOW", I yelled "We're not involved with those kids", he yelled "GET OUT NOW".. though I wanted to yell "You get down, you're not above the law", we left to avoid BS to follow. I have constables (cops with no power) and 3-5 Suffolk cars in my town most days, (upper/middle class white neighborhood). I've been questioned by the police for rolling cigarettes. They're overpaid (100k+ per yr after 5 yrs I think) and harass innocent people. Not much happens in Suffolk County, so when something does, all these cops jump all over it cause its the most excitement they've had all week. There are a few nice ones out there, few and far in between.

I used to live in Bohemia . Now I live about 20-25 min away but still go there often. This cop is a complete DICK. AND YES they make over 100K after 5 yrs I think its 65-70K after 3. Last yr the cop test brought in some record of like 15K applicants ( alot of NYC cops go for it since Suffolk is about DOUBLE of NYC). The 5th where this cop is from covers alot of area and alot of it has gangs -mostly South Americans. there are alot of shootings about 5-10 min away from this chase. Could be where it started. Still this guy was such a douche. I've dealt with the Suffolk police alot and thank god not all them are like him.
