***Cargill recalling 36 million pounds of ground turkey!*** - Pin for GLP awareness
Apparently a number of people have fallen ill due to a salmonella outbreak associated with this product.

From the article:

Meat giant Cargill is recalling 36 million pounds of ground turkey linked to a nationwide salmonella outbreak that has killed one person in California and sickened at least 76 others.

Illnesses in the outbreak date back to March and have been reported in 26 states coast to coast.

Cargill said Wednesday that it is recalling fresh and frozen ground turkey products produced at the company's Springdale, Ark., plant from Feb. 20 through Aug. 2 due to possible contamination from the strain of salmonella linked to the illnesses.

All of the packages recalled include the code "Est. P-963" on the label, according to Cargill. The packages were labeled with many different brands, including Cargill's Honeysuckle White.

Well, I'm calling the store to make sure they are given a heads up along with the code "Est. P-963", and then I'm going to run through the 3 packages of ground turkey breakfast sausage we have in our freezer.

Figured I would get this out for the awareness of GLP members and their respective families.
I'm just a figment of your imagination ;-)

bump

Please double check your freezers or refrigerators if your family consumes ground turkey, and look for the product code mentioned in the original post.

Thanks for the heads up OP. I checked and have three packages in the freezer. Would have been four but I cooked some two nights ago. Wonderful.

Would not surprise me a dang bit. According to the article it was produced at the company's Springdale Arkansas plant from February 20th to August 2nd....so I would not be overly surprised if there was some in different food distribution warehouses or even currently on pallets bound for stores in the next day or two if Cargill did not get the information out in a prompt fashion.

I just called the store I work at and gave the manager on duty a heads up, and asked if we had gotten a fax in yet. He said "Nope, haven't had anything come in tonight yet."
So I gave him the code found on the package, and asked him to look for the Honeysuckle White as a starting point, and then go through any other fresh and frozen ground turkey. We do not have a huge variety of ground turkey at the store...so it should not be any trouble for him at all. Infact, I just cleared the one in my freezer, which I got from the store here about a month ago. So one brand is ruled out.

You cooked it. Good. As long as you handled it with care and no cross-contamination it's ok. Return the rest to where you bought it and get your $ back.

Always cook ground meat well and wash your hands and surfaces you worked when you use ground meats, chicken or raw eggs.

I am very sorry to hear that, salty. verysad

I hope you and yours are free of any trouble, and that it stays that way. Generally speaking, salmonella food poisoning will show up no longer than 72 hours after infection. If I recall correctly from my food safety class...the usual arrival is 24 hours.

On the plus side, it can be killed by cooking food thoroughly. So hopefully you and yours are safe, as well as any other people that may have unsuspectingly ingested said product.

Cargill is also trying to sweep this aside, offering up only this:

"Given our concern for what has happened, and our desire to do what is right for our consumers and customers, we are voluntarily removing our ground turkey products from the marketplace," said Steve Willardsen, president of Cargill's turkey processing business.

Cargill executive Willardsen said, "Public health and the safety of consumers cannot be compromised."

"It is regrettable that people may have become ill from eating one of our ground turkey products," he said, "and, for anyone who did, we are truly sorry."

To which I reply: Kiss my ass, sorry don't cut it....voluntary my ass...it should be fucking mandatory. And cover people's doctor bills if you are so genuinely fucking sorry.

Thanks again OP. I have no symptoms, and know it was properly cooked. Also, did not state this earlier, but the packages I purchased with this code are the Honeysuckle White brand.
As far as Cargill's response, Please! Not buying it. Who knows how long they were aware of this problem before any product was pulled and the public given notice.
And no, you cannot count on any government regulatory officials to notify the public. These food giants will tell "our" government officials how it will be handled.

Just wondering what did they say to do with the pkgs? Get rid of it? Send it back to the store or other facility? If it's the latter, it's questionable I think.

Someone here on GLP mentioned about food recalls being set up as a way to round up a massive amount of prepared food in a short time period for the bunkers hiding!! Don't know if it's true but who knows!

I re-read the article. Funny enough...they don't state what to do with it. I can not speak for other places of business...but where I work, if something is recalled and somebody brings it back to the store, we give a refund and the product thrown immediately in the trash.

I hope like hell other businesses have such a policy in place. If not...they sure as hell should.

I propose people let Cargill have it. And when I say that...I mean hit 'em where it hurts. In the wallet. "I'm sorry" just does not cut it for me when it comes to mega corporations....especially given the fact that it was produced for such a long period of time. If they had any real business ethics the very first time it tested positive, they would have thrown the shit out without hesitation, stopped production and scrubbed the place from top to bottom. Whatever happened to ethics and integrity?

The wife bought some turkey meat when it was on sale at the local Walrus Mart (on a major budget right now), and I was freaking out when this hit the Houston news.

Turns out is a Cargill product, but luckily ours wasn't on the list.

Definitely makes you wonder about the items that end up on clearance.

they do run clearance items like that

I have found a problem with many items that go on 'sale'

seems they are pushing many items that are deadly IMO

no surprise there

less is more

keep it as basic as you can

and wise choices

why eat wood cellulose

why eat diseased meat

since when do cows eat ground up cow???

all cows I have observed are vegetarian...unless the cwhoreporate greed overcomes common sense and becomes criminal under the auspices of federally mandated mafioso

seems evident-

Even the scientists have been in the media reporting the corruption at the FDA

and at the USDA would not be a leap as they collude with cwhoreporate monsters like monsatan-their bitch to them

As of yesterday they weren't even sure it was the ground turkey - they just 'thought' it might be. Notice the words 'linked to'. Sure wish we could be a bit more sure - what if they're recalling the wrong item?
