I am from Sydenham and it is much more dangerous than it was 10 years ago. That murdered boy lived on my old road, it really shocked the community. I lived right next to Home Park and it can be very dangerous, the library is a gang meet point. I once saw a gang of 50+ once at night, I don't know why there was such a meeting but I thanked my lucky stars I took a cab home rather than walked.

I worked at a school and I was walking a class of 12 year olds through Home park and a group of teens (maybe this same gang) stopped and eyed me up and chatted to eachother, like they were actually thinking of mugging me and doing God knows what in front of a primary school class. Luckily they just insulted me, kissed their teeth and walked on. Very scary but that is the Lower Sydenham estates for you.

As for the race thing, I wouldn't call it a race thing but rather a cultural thing. I know dickheads of all colours and races in South London, nothings exclusive. There is however a culture, inspired by foreign and domestic gangland and anti social cultures, which is making South London a more concerning place to live.

Ever watch "Crime Watch"? The photographs of the people the police are looking for which they show on the programme are always 95% black... week after week.

It is not a competition but you're right, I am sure it is much worse in many areas of the US, it is worse in many areas of the UK but nevertheless that doesn't make it any more tolerable when shit like this happens.
