IT'S SNOWING IN AUCKLAND!

This hasn't happened in 40 to 50 years!

Confirmed snow on the North Shore in Auckland in Beacheaven. Also significant amounts of snow in the Bombay Hills in the south of Auckland. Rangitoto will possibly get a beautiful white top!

Reports of power outages throughout the South Island. Parts of Christchurch including ares in the Eastern Suburbs are the most affected. Genesis Power is on to it and working on establishing generators for temporary restoration of power.

Most schools closed in South Island. Everything is near stand still. Police warning people not to travel anywhere and to stay at home unless strictly necessary.

Heavy blizzards continuing to fall in Christchurch.

There's about 10cm of snow on the ground with blizzard conditions dumping more through the day. Could have 20cm (6inches) by this afternoon.

Most of New Zealand is now blanketed with snow. There are people trapped in cars in various places through the country - Desert Road, Arthurs Pass, Rimutaka Hills..

Hi to all Kiwis both in New Zealand and expats. Thought it would be a good idea to centralise weather news for Christchurch.

We had our first small snow shower in the central city around 12:45pm. Lasted about 15min. There's still small patches of snow/ice on the ground. Be extra cautious while duriving.

The Canterbury vs Northland game in the ITM Cup match at Rugby Park in Christchurch could be affected. At the very least it will make it a very interesting and cold game.
