DIY faraday cages for EMP protection
With all the CME stuff going on I thought I'd post a page where this guy gives a DIY faraday cage. Pretty cheap actually. Would be good to put some basic supplies like a flashlight etc in case an EMP does happen. An older car would be good or duplicate circuit boards for your current car in a faraday cage just in case.peace

"With radio's and smaller appliances, a Faraday cage can be built by using two cardboard boxes: one should fit tightly inside the other, and the item to be covered should itself fit reasonably well inside the smaller box. That is about the most work involved--finding the right size boxes! The outer box is then covered with aluminum foil or Mylar, as from a cheap "space blanket." A grounding wire is then taped to the foil. I then cover the foil with black 6 mil plastic, taped securely in place, to protect the foil from ripping. At the end of the ground wire I attach a cheap small alligator clip from Radio Shack. The item to be protected is placed inside the inner box, which acts as insulation from the outer box, and any EMP hitting the foil and is bled away by the ground wire."

Someone told me that if you put one of those rubber long things on the back of your car then it will protect it from an EMP burst.

Also about earthing all electrical equipment to the radiators in the house will protect them.

Dont know how true this is so would appreciate the feedback.

This forum here had a good topic going and it they talk about that. It seems that the grounding issue has come up. Worth a read although there are differing opinions.

Re: DIY faraday cages for EMP protection
get some of that 1) canned spray insulation foam 2) galvanized trash can 3) a cardboard box that fits in the can and gives at least 2 or 3 inches space all around

3 boxes of mac and cheese
or use your own sense... to prop the cardboard box up off the bottom of the trashcan
blanket, old sweatshirt or old winter coat on top of whatever you are protecting

good cage

I heard the same thing but.. most of microwaves leak.

Here is a good laugh for you...After I saw the video below I went to Lowe's and put my Cell phone in every microwave they had on display.

The guy who worked in appliances was so intrigued with what I was doing that he helped me conduct the test.

To our surprise the cell rang in every microwave but one. I don't remember the brand name but I do remember it was the most expensive one they had!

In conclusion...Better build a faraday cage...unless you own a $500 microwave.

Re: DIY faraday cages for EMP protection
Hello hattip
I was wondering if anyone would know if a regular file cabinet such as :filecabnet:
With a rubber matt on the shelves and then the electronics in the box they came in put inside a cheap plastic milk carton box (so if it gets knocked around some the electronics won't touch the sides of cabinet)
:milkcrate:
And then grounded of course would work?
Thank you for any info or thoughts!

Re: DIY faraday cages for EMP protection
Why bother?

Two sources of EMP threat exist.

Nuclear blast, in which case you have much bigger issues to deal with.. like nuclear war, and CME Event.

In the later, the whole globe is effected.

Remember what happened to Fukishema when they lost power to the pumps and couldn't pump coolant water to the waste ponds and reactors?

A world where a CME event has knocked out all the power would do that to every nuclear power plant on earth.

Yeah sure, we can rebuild all the transformers in ten years time... but how are we going to deal with just the 100 nuclear power plants in the USA? Lets not forget that all of those Europeans and Asians have nuclear power plants up the wazoo.

If the power goes out, its and end game scenario. With about 440 Fukishema events taking place all over the world, the Northern Hemisphere will not recover in thousands of years.

Aluminum trashcan with foil to seal the edges.
Works like a charm and super cheap.

So, how many EMP attacks have you been thru that justifies you saying "works like a charm " ?
