I always thought we would either have a massive explosion when the corium hit the water table OR that the cores would melt down close enough to the water table to produce a radioactive steam geyser for god-knows-how-long. Fucking lovely.

If that is the case it would not take much to melt through it and hit the water below hence the steam.
