The Bible was his property. It doesn't matter if YOU think it is silly. It was HIS and very likely important to him. Maybe it had sentimental value because it once belonged to someone he loved. Maybe it was important because he liked to read it. I doubt it was some covered in gold and jewels, so they stole it from pure meanness.

Yes, there are Bibles that have significant resale value, but even if he so happened to be carrying one they wouldn't have known they could get money for it.
