Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1513425 United States 08/21/2011 04:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I know that gold is a heavy metal, but I find it hard to believe that a ton of gold would as small as a 15 inch cube. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1277434 Step by Step: 1. According to [link to en.wikipedia.org] a 1oz American Gold Eagle is 2.87mm thick and 32.7mm in diameter. There are 32,000 ounces in a ton. 32,000 x 2.87 = 91840mm or 9184cm. So a stack of 32,000 Gold Eagles (1 ton of Gold) would be 9184cm high (or 3615.7 inches high). 2. 3615.7 inches divided by 15 inches = 241 stacks of Gold Eagles, each stack being 15 inches high. 3. At 32.7mm in diameter, it would take 11.65 coins, side by side, to make 15 inches. So that's 11.65 stacks per row. Since it's a cube, there are 11.65 rows. 11.65 x 11.65 = 136 stacks total in a 15 inch cube. 4. Since coins are round, there will be gaps between them. Most of the remaining 105 stacks would fit in those gaps. 5. Also, the American Gold Eagle actually weighs more than 1oz. It has 1oz of gold plus a bit of silver and copper to make it less soft. So if you remove all the silver and copper, the cube should compress to fit in the remaining gold. |
