Algorithums!!! Please read and PIN if you like it :)

In computer programming, there are often many different ways -- algorithms -- to accomplish any given task. Each algorithm has advantages and disadvantages in different situations. Sorting is one place where a lot of research has been done, because computers spend a lot of time sorting lists. Here are five different algorithms that are used in sorting:

Bin sort
Merge sort
Bubble sort
Shell sort
Quicksort

If you have a million integer values between 1 and 10 and you need to sort them, the bin sort is the right algorithm to use. If you have a million book titles, the quicksort might be the best algorithm. By knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the different algorithms, you pick the best one for the task at hand.

Basically according to the BBC news website these algorithums are writing programs we can no longer read. Thus becoming smarter than we are. Please see the link below and comment :)

Sorry for the typo's when spelling Algorithms. I was a bit excited when writing this and rushed it a little :)

Great thread! I liked the part about dynamiting through rock...so an algorithm can be 3 microseconds quicker!

Perhaps it is the inevitable fate of intelligent life to be outsmarted by its own devices.

Re: OMG this is crazy!!! Technology Advancing Beyond Our Understanding?
for years...

during the 80 the Pentagon and the KGB(russia inteligence) invented each a big neuronal-network based software for getting information from web communication. The problem: these algorithms got so much complex, they started to communicate and exchange information. from the middle of '90s no one where able to understand the exchanged informations.

further:
during the 90's a biologist made a life-simulating program called 'sorry-forgot'. he simulated an enviroment, with limited resources, a dna-like code for creating life-forms, a 'destructor' for removing 'dead' life-forms and a random mutation mechanism. He created a 80-line life-form and run the simulation for testing. He got courious about to see the speed of development while this 1.st run. Very quick mutation created lifeforms with 60 lines of code. then appered virus-like lifeforms, without having 'replication'-code. similar to real life. also, a 'hyper-virus' of about 12 lines code appered. they were causing a virus to produce hyper-viruses.

THAT just freaked me out
If it be asked, What is the most sacred duty and the greatest source of our security in a Republic? The answer would be, An inviolable respect for the Constitution and Laws.

Experiments are being done to have machines take in information (camera, environment) and make "their own choices" as to how to traverse the terrain...

Where then would putting algorithms in place to help them make their own assesments as to Friend or Foe and how to handle people in general, lead to?
