In other words a 20% unemployment rate equals 10 out of the 50 states, completely unemployed. Can you imagine driving into a state, and not one single person working? Now imagine 10 states with no one working. Now imagine lining those states up from east coast to west coast, and driving across the entire United States, and not one single person in any of the states you drive through has a job. |

Last I heard 44 million people are now on food stamps! Not only do these people not have jobs, they are now dependent on those who have jobs. Last Edited by GodFrequency on 08/25/2011 10:46 AM |

Well, from what I read here in good GLP, a lot of the people who post are waiting in earnest for the economy to shit itself. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1517745 Maybe they're curious to see what 90% unemployment is like? I honestly hope the whole thing falls apart myself. I'm tired of this rigged system. I'm tired of paying for the corruption, and I'm tired of their broken crooked laws. Once it all collapses, it will be painful, but eventually we'll have to go back to work, and start manufacturing and producing again as a nation, and using our vast rich resources for the benefit of the population. We won't be able to afford to import cheap crap from foreign nations any longer. |

All those people that are unemployed will no longer be consuming, and those not consuming will lead to even more layoffs from jobs that no longer have enough consumers. Hate to say it, but SSI disability is a rigged system also, alone with welfare. All you need is a good greedy layer to get on it. May taake a couple of years but you get the back pay anyway. People are trying to get it for silly shit also, like being bipolar, alcoholism, my back hurts, etc. It also pays you more then if you were to draw SSI retirement at the same time, which totally makes no sense. I know of a half dozen people who are abusing this system, they collect more then half that I make busting my butt 40 hours a week. Get free medical and have all the big boy toys, they know how to get around that also. Totally disgusting! |

I agree that SSI disability needs to be overhauled. What's happening is that parents are getting wise to the idea that if their child is "disabled" to the point it affects his academics, they can collect a SSI disability check on the child. So, they claim their children are ADHD, have a learning disability (processing defect), bi-polar, etc. They refuse to help their child with his school work at all because their intent is for the child to get behind enough to prove the disability is affecting his education - and free money comes rolling in for that child. It's really sick - I couldn't believe it the first time I saw it, but I guess I'm immune to it now because it happens so often down here in Georgia. The state is a bunch of freeloaders. Then you have the parents who legitimately have a child with a disability, so they have more in hopes the same disability crops up again and again. I work with one family who has five natural children and four are disabled. Wouldn't a normal person stop at one fearing a genetic abnormality? Four disability checks. I'm not sure how much each check is, but say it's $700-800 per child plus fee health care, free lunches, etc. The dad doesn't have a great job (mom doesn't work) so they probably get an earned income credit as well. Let's all just scam $50-$60K+ off the government annually. |

I'm not entirely sure I'm buying the 20% figure. I was looking at a list of household incomes this morning and most states had median (the exact middle) in the mid-forties. Median per capita income is around $40,000. To me, this means a lot of those unemployed are second income earners and probably aren't looking very hard but are milking the unemployment income as long as they can. |

I've read article after article and the statistics from one don't match up to the statistics from another. That's the trouble with statistics - you can ask your survey questions so as to get the answers you want. I'm not denying that things aren't rosy, in fact they suck, but I do think some of the doom and gloomers are portraying it even worse than it is. What happens is you start to question the truth of it all. This blog, for example states: Today, more than 40% of all jobs in the United States are low income jobs. 20%, it states are making $10.65 or less. How could 40% of all jobs be low income when the MEDIAN per capita income is slightly over $40,000? What the heck to they consider low income? How do you get median household incomes of the upper 40s when there are so many making $10.65 or less? It also states 1/3 cannot pay an additional house payment if they lost a job. OK, are we talking cash flow problems or no money in any account whatsoever? I've been here before - with two kids in college - after you pay their bills and then something goes wrong with a car, A/C or something and you are run down to nothing and would have trouble paying a house payment the next month. It hardly means I'm broke with seven figures in retirement accounts. It just means I'm having temporary cash flow problems. I guess what I'm saying is to take all these "statistics" with a grain of salt as most are touted merely to prove a point. |

Here is going to come the chop with so many people unemployed and willing to accept lower wages they start trimming the fat. First they cut the non essential workers, consolidate there job to another knob polisher who with less experience and usually a temp to hire.
