The Norfolk and Long Island Hurricane of 1821 made landfall in the city itself -- in Jamaica Bay, Queens --
and the 13-foot surge inundated more than a mile of Manhattan from Battery Park to Canal Street.

For those not familiar with NYC, "Battery Park to Canal Street" would
extend DEEPER INLAND than the storm surge map, from the southern
tip of Manhattan to the top of the word "AMTRAK" in the map below:

Although modern-day shipping channels have been dredged deeper to
accommodate massive cargo ships, the rest of the harbor is undoubtedly
shallower than in 1821 from nearly two centuries of sludge and sediment ...
meaning water will be pushed higher onto land than in the 1821 hurricane.
