Laser pointers a crime? Really?
Looking for opinion here. Just read in the paper two people have been charged for shining a laser pointer at undercover cops. The cops were in a boat at night patrolling the river (the 'shiners' were on shore, so the distance was considerable). Apparently, the cops went to the hospital with "minor injuries", which of course I don't buy. These two now have a criminal record.

Now, I understand that lasers *can* cause eye damage, but these were consumer grade and the perps were at a distance. Could they not have just been told to smarten up? Instead of being charged with assault with a weapon? What bothers me most is that I feel charges never would have been laid had the 'victims' been civilians.

Am I overreacting? This story makes me mad. I used to play with a laser pointer when I was younger; should I turn myself in?

You do not want to point them at planes or helicopters

They BLIND a person for life.

Yep ... they ARE dangerous, VERY dangerous.

(if you don't think they are dangerous take one and point at your own eyes for a few seconds!! ... and see how YOU react once YOU have lost part of YOUR sight, for life)

If you shine it at anyone in any type of vehicle it's a crime. Why don't you go to a freeway overpass and point it at passing cars and see what happens.

I have a 2000mw green laser I got in Cambodia last year.
I assure you it is DANGEROUS!
It comes with a key so it won't go off by accident.
I am in the laser business so I know.
I have two forty watt Epilog lasers.
My little hand held pointer will blind you instantly from miles away.
I'm sure the kids had nothing more than 250mw. or they would have done permanant dammage.

Twenty years ago my friend made a laser pointer...a great long board of wood with all the laser bits bolted to it. We were pointing it at a street sign from a second story window and five minutes later the cops were at the door and would not leave until they came upstairs to see the laser.

My Uncle mounted a laser on a RC plane that was equipped with a camera and on-board computer/telemetry system. He used it to attack the local DEA helicopters. He is in jail on felony charges.

Yes Lasers are dangerous you fucktards...like many other things are also dangerous. Lasers also have virtually unlimited range, which sets them apart from other such things like BB guns for instance which I'm sure most of you dumbfucks would have also hurt other people with if they had the range to.

This is exactly why bullshit nanny state "safety" laws can and do get passed, because of ignorant dipshits that do cause harm to other people with thier own stupidness. Then they scratch thier dumb heads and bitch about being oppressed.

A better solution would be to have a microwave beam weapon return fire to the laser source, burning the users hand off. Then all they'd have to say is something like, "Wuh....I was just like microwaving back dood, I did it like when I was a kid wuuuh..." One less retard fucking it up for the rest of us by sticking forks in toasters and doing other dumbshit things.

Cameras are legal too, but when you chase people around and harass them it's no wonder you get your shit tazed and your ass kicked...exercise some personal responsibility.

Exactly
Isn't it ironic I can buy a 2000mw laser in a market in Cambodia and not here.
It's because no one there is dumb enough to point it at an airplane or cop.
We lose our freedom to do dangerous things and wind up in a nany state.

Lololol

There's not enough energy in a red laser to damage any part of your eye. It's not even as bad as flashing someone with a high powered LED. You only think it hurts because of the flood of light entering your eyeball.

This is why people need to pay attention more in school.

I boy went to prison for shining a powerful green laser pointer at an airplane when it came in for a landing, that happened a few months ago...

They are very dangerous, there are ones now that are powerful enough to instantly blind or burn flesh in a second - and they are handheld too.

I have one actually, it is a green 5mW (miliwatt, 1000 miliwatt in 1 watt) it can't burn stuff but it is very bright and visible as the beam shines up into the sky.

You are only going to go blind from pointing a laser in eyesd if it is for an extended period of time. A few brief flashes in your eyes from a Office Depot laser pointer won't do anything.

We'r not talkin office depot lasers here.
2000 mw ...that is two thousand milli watt or two watts.
Two watts will burn your retina out before you can blink.
That's why it is a class 3b laser.
This is my business... I know.
www.plasticsmith.ca
Look at the laser cutting and engraving.
Don't point them in the air.
All I can say is it is a good thing you can't buy them in North America.

Which is 8000 times brighter than the sun. I used one of these to make a "defensive web" in a safe zone of my house. I can go in there, with eye protection, and anyone coming in to get me is fucked. I will own their (single or multiple people) ass in short order.

These things are not toys,
You can find a one watt green laser on the internet and pay alot.
Or you could go to Thailand or Cambodia...have a great time .. then bring back a few 2 watt lasers... you will pay around $150 us.
I think you could pay for your trip.
