Leonidas (OP) User ID: 1489659 United States 08/29/2011 09:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Alpha Lipoic Acid. You are going to be hearing alot about this amazing compound in the coming years. ALA is a very powerful antioxidant that also dramatically improves the action of other antioxidants, such as vitamins E and C, glutathione and CoQ10. ALA is, in all respects, the antioxidants' antioxidant. Although ALA has been around for years, researchers are now intently trying to pry open new hidden secrets of ALA's many amazing health benefits. Pharmaceutical companies are currently seeking licenses to make ALA a prescription drug. Very shortly, ALA is going to hit the mainstream medical establishment in a big way. Things you should know about ALA: Your body naturally makes ALA. If you are young and in fairly good health, you probably don't need to supplement with it. If you are about 45 yrs of age (the median age when ALA begins to decline) or older, it's not a bad idea to supplement it. There are two forms: R-ALA and S-ALA (well, actually a third form that combines a racemic mixture R/S ALA). The one you want is R. It is the one most widely available anyway. ALA stimulates insulin response and normalizes blood sugar levels. ALA has been shown to reverse all stages of diabetes. ALA grows new nerve cells. This is already having exciting implications in clinical research for the treatment of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and ALS [Lou Gehrig's disease]. ALA supplementation depletes the body of B vitamins. So take a good B complex. Right now, there are very few doctors who understand ALA for disease treatment. Dr. Berkson runs a clinic in New Mexico and sees patients from all over the world. The last I heard, you can call and make an appointment with him. If I had liver disease, he's the first physician I would go to. An antioxidant that has been around for years with little commotion, yet a compound with amazing properties is now causing quite a stir and getting the attention of clinical researchers and the medical establishment at large. Quoting: Leonidas Dr. Berkson was in medical and pathology training at 2 hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, when he was assigned to 6 critical patients who were suffering from acute hepatic necrosis secondary to hepatotoxic mushroom poisoning. He ordered thioctic acid (alpha-lipoic acid) from the National Institutes of Health and injected this antioxidant drug into the patients. In spite of their highly threatening condition the patients, as measured by laboratory values and clinical parameters, recovered quickly. Dr. Fred Bartter (then Chief of Hypertension and Endocrinology at the NIH) and Dr. Berkson were astounded by their recoveries and went on to treat many more mushroom poisoning patients. Over the years, Dr. Berkson continued to treat additional patients with other medical conditions using ALA, and observed similar results. Listen to this taped interview session (audio) with Dr. Berkson as he explains how he stumbled upon Lipoic Acid. It is an absolutely astounding interview made even more astounding when he relates how the hospital administration admonished him for saving two lives. WHATEVER User ID: 35111196 Netherlands 07/23/2013 08:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OP, thanks for the info and do you happen to know whether ALA,glutathione and lipoic vitamin C is in any way helpful against glaucoma, as my eyepressure has recently gone up to round 30 instead of round 12 normal pressure, so there is the risk of becoming totally blind if unchecked ? Thanks anyway. I believe e.g. ginko biloba, vitamin C and E, faty acid omega 3 and magnesium chloride could be useful against glaucoma. These pharma eyedrops often contain a preservative, that actually harms your vision, quite ridiculous if you think about it. |

Here is a presentation by Dr. Berkson as keynote speaker at the NIH Nat'l Library of Medicine some years ago where he retells this story, skip to about the 2:00 minute mark. Anonymous Coward User ID: 15660308 United States 05/19/2015 04:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | yep, good stuff. I'm a type 1 diabetic for 50 years. This means my pancreas stopped working 50 years ago. It's not because I was fat, in fact I was way underweight. Type 1 is completely different than type 2. I have taken insulin shots for 50 years now I first started taking ALA some 25 years ago for neuropathy, but I got tired of swallowing pills all day long. So, I got lazy with taking ALA I had a open wound on my leg, very nasty, would not heal, very oozy. It was going to be hospital time real soon. So, I started taking 1200MG a day of ALA along with other vitamins. DRAMATIC difference. It's healing up . Blood sugar is lower, insulin use is down. This ALA will probably be banned soon.. |
