Another cop stealing from motorists! It used to be they would just steal money from you and give it to the state (in the form of tickets). Now they'll steal it from you directly! But hey, he did it for his kids!

Former Tahlequah officer charged in thefts from motorists

TAHLEQUAH -- Cherokee County prosecutors have filed charges accusing a former Tahlequah police officer of stealing a total of $1,660 from the wallets of three motorists during traffic stops, records show.

James Troy Johnson, 45, faces one count of grand larceny, a felony, and two counts of petty larceny, a misdemeanor, documents indicate. Johnson, who was charged Aug. 17, posted $10,000 bail and was released, a Cherokee County jail spokeswoman said.

During a July 25 interview with Tahlequah Detective Captain Dale Glory, Johnson told Glory that he had never called dispatch on any of the stops in question and never had written any of the alleged victims a ticket, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Asked why he took the money, Johnson told police, “Dale, you no (sic) I am single and that I have two boys that are everything to me,” adding that he used the cash to pay for his children’s golf tournaments, travel and other things for his kids, records indicate.
