One of my dreams is to live in a cashless city. All working for the benefits of all. It could be a small village with a few families to farm and build and just live without the control imposed on us.
 Quoting: Passive Resistance

A smooth working money system of a dependable design is possible.

The present system uses some mix and match economic arguments and justifications that are not completely valid.

It is conceived in shortage because some of the arguments and justifications come from using precious metals (shortage) as the basis for money.

However, the hypothecated debt model is not based on precious metals; it is instead a mutual credit model - but the bankers are stealing the seignorage (seigniorage is the spelling I prefer). This theft of seignorage contributes to the shortage memeplex and enables the enrichment of the elite few.

A model for money as a method of communicating distribution and ownership is a model based on a conceptual model of an open-ended and highly productive social structure.

To get a better handle on these concepts, start with "environmentally green money system" found on page 32: Thread: Get rid of the money system, then get rid of goverrments (Page 32)

After that, read: "Little Rooster on The Monkey Trap" which is found midway down page 14: Thread: Get rid of the money system, then get rid of goverrments (Page 14)

An idea closely related to this (search string: "straw bale" + "manure tea" + greenhouse heat): [link to www.google.com]

Not only does the composting process of the strawbales provide heat, but you can plant stuff directly into the strawbales.

COOL - GOTTA TRY THIS!!

How to Grow Vegetables in Straw Bales

Vegetable gardening in hay bales is similar to gardening in raised beds in that it is a convenient way to garden for those who have restricted mobility or limited space. The hay bales usually will last about two seasons. As a bonus, over time the hay decomposes and the interior of the hay bale becomes composted material, which adds nutrients for the growing plants.

WOW! This is just wonderful. I'd move there if I didn't have a family to care for (can't uproot right now). I'm going to feature them on my website. Thanks OP for posting this. This is what we, as American citizens, SHOULD be doing to rebuild our nation and our communities.

I'm going to let my teenager watch this and get some inspiration and ideas because my kid is always talking about stuff like this. I think I'll use our sunroom in our home and plant some stuff--TRY and plant something (although it will probably die because of my not-so-green thumb).

great land, good for growing. i'm older, 51, so the radiation will not affect me as much. i'd be worried if i were a young person though.

Re: Farmin' in the HOOD --- VIDEO --- these families raise tons of food and have transformed the neighborhood...URBAN FARMING/ GARDENING
I live in central Illinois. I've been trying to do this for three years. I got a 40 x 60 greenhouse two story tank room designed for solar panels for electricity. Got a 5000 gallon tank, a 1000 gallon tank, a dozen 250 gallon tanks, and several 55 gallon aquariums for breeding my tilapia. Native blue tilapia - no hormones. Over 300ft of hydro channels; over 2000 tilapia. Some koi, chickens and worms; working on rabbits & growing duckweed. But I do it alone and can't do all the work that needs to be done I also want to grow edible and medicinal mushrooms and herbs, but labor is my issue. Living in my small town I have few visionaries let alone some one that realizes the benefits of labor exchange. So the dream is slow to become fully functional.

Volunteers, backers, partner, & benefactor needed.

Congratulations on thinking somewhat larger than normal. One step larger and some specialization and you can go commercial.

A smooth working monetary system of low extractive cost (money will never be "free") is a significant part of the whole picture.

See this thread; plow through it to gain different perspectives; links and discussion in depth: Thread: Get rid of the money system, then get rid of goverrments

Koi are cold hardy, but tilapia will die if water temperatures drop below (?) ~60 degrees F. You might look into different species of fish so as to not lose and entire fish harvest. The guys in Milwaukee are growing yellow perch.

michigan, where are you?
 Quoting: tinygreen

CA - but I was born in Michigan...

are you planning on staying in Michigan for the long term?

I don't know if I can stay in CA or the US for that matter...

yeah, staying here. i have inherited the family farm. altogether with my parent house, we have 10 acres of land left. our farm used to have 2000, but after grandpa got sick he sold most of it. then, after he died, my mom sold all but 5 acres for the taxes and to buy out her siblings.

great land, good for growing. i'm older, 51, so the radiation will not affect me as much. i'd be worried if i were a young person though.

to be perfectly honest, the entire world is in trouble. i'm going to sit it out here, i'm in the country and i am getting prepared for when shtf. i plan on taking people in if something happens. many hands can get the work done and keep people safe.

Re: Farmin' in the HOOD --- VIDEO --- these families raise tons of food and have transformed the neighborhood...URBAN FARMING/ GARDENING
Well since were talking shtf, here is a laundry soap recipe that will save you money. This is a copy/paste of the recipe I use. I got it off the web last year but have no idea where or who to give credit to. This recipe and others like it have been posted here but until now I hadn't taken the time to break it down and determine how much I need of each ingredient. The calculations are listed at the bottom.

The Soap: The most typical type of soap to use is Fels Naptha. It is an old-fashioned type of soap usually found in the laundry aisle. The other options for soap are Ivory or another brand called, Zote. Any of these will work. If you use Ivory or your own homemade soap you will need to use the whole bar.

Washing Soda: This is not to be confused with baking soda. They are not the same thing. Washing soda is sodium carbonate or soda ash (baking soda is sodium bicarbonate). It is a white powder. Its purpose is to help remove dirt and orders. The brand to look for is Arm & Hammer Washing Soda. I find it in the laundry section of my grocery store. Many people have a hard time finding this locally. I know you can purchase it on-line, even through Amazon.com. I would also suggest asking your grocery store manager if it would be possible for the store to get it for you.

Borax: Borax is a naturally occurring mineral: Sodium Borate. It is a white powder. It’s purpose is as a laundry whitener and deodorizer. The brand to look for is 20 Mule Team. It comes in a 76 oz. box. You should be able to locate this in the laundry detergent aisle. Again as with the washing soda, if you cannot find it ask you store manager or look online.
USE THIS RECIPE
Homemade Laundry Soap
1/3 bar Fels Naptha or other type of soap, as listed above
½ cup washing soda
½ cup borax powder
~You will also need a small bucket, about 2 gallon size~

Grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan. Add 6 cups water and heat it until the soap melts. Add the washing soda and the borax and stir until it is dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cups hot water into the bucket. Now add your soap mixture and stir. Now add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir. Let the soap sit for about 24 hours and it will gel. You use ½ cup per load.

The finished soap will not be a solid gel. It will be more of a watery gel that has been accurately described as an "egg drop soup" look.

The soap is a low sudsing soap. So if you don’t see suds, that is ok. Suds are not what does the cleaning, it is the ingredients in the soap.

If you want your soap to have some sort of scent you can scent this with ½ to 1 oz. of essential oil or fragrance oil of your choice.

Calculations:
THIS IS HOW MANY BATCHES YOU CAN MAKE
Washing Soda - 55 ounce box
1/2 Cup = 5 ounces
Each box has 11 "servings"

Borax - 76 ounce box
1/2 Cup = 3 ounces
Each box has 25 "servings"

Fels Naptha
Each bar has 3 "servings"

You'll need:
2 boxes of Washing Soda (22 full recipes)
1 box of Borax (22 full recipes + 3 extra servings)
8 bars of Fels Naptha (22 full recipes +2 extra servings)
I keep it in an old bleach bottle and put it into an old laundry detergent bottle for daily use. Shake it up each time before putting in wash, just one or two shakes, nothing major, and give a good shake to the bleach jug when refilling your laundry jug.
Saves you a fortune. I have 7 in the family so needless to say I use alot of laundry soap. I bought the stuff, which cost me about thr price of a large bottle of tide, (about 15 bucks) and I will have laundry soap for probably about a year! The washing soda is 5 bucks, the borax is 4 or 5 bucks, and the bar soap fels naptha is a buck ( I bought 5) I also went to the dollar store and bought a 4 oz bottle of fragrance they have sitting near the incense and use about a third of a bottle in each batch. My hubby and teens love the smell. Between walmart and ace hardware you can find everything you need to make this stuff. It is also better for septic tanks cause its non sudsing.

oh, hell, yes!! i have been looking at soap recepies and haven't seen one yet as good as yours. and you use it so i know it's good. i understand about the nonsuds part. i used to by french shampoo that didn't suds. now i use VO5. 99cents a bottle. love it.

I have a big ass bag of the a&h washing soda on the dryer right now. 20 mule team borax also. i'm almost set to make soap!!!

i'll mos def be trying this. hugs
