The mysterious number 6174 is known as Kaprekar's constant:

I figured this out about 6174

6+1+7+4= 18 (1 + 8)= 9
Divides by 9 (686 times)

Anyway, I found it interesting that even Kaprekar's constant reduces and divides by 9.
