Here is exact quote from Article III of the United States Constitution:

6 On the testimony of two or three witnesses a man shall be put to death, but no one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.Yes, there was a time when things biblical were taken upon consideration in the U.S., hence it was begat upon the Christian tradition.
