The New Madrid fault is no where near Louisville, KY. Quoting: John Nash [link to en.wikipedia.org] dude c'mon. it is close enough and yes, an earthquake of real size would be felt for hundreds and hundreds of miles away. An earthquake on the new madrid would be felt in Chicago. So you're saying that the New Madrid Fault Zone which experiences tiny quakes on a regular basis is the cause for the crack in the 61 year old bridge to Louisville, KY? Not a chance. Calm down, you guys! You may BOTH be right!! Perhaps the New Madrid didn't CAUSE the cracks, but even slight shaking can't be good for concrete which is supposed to stay rigid! At the same time, having a major bridge shut down at a time when an evacuation could conceivably be necessary, doesn't that "feel" like it could be a piece of a "perfect storm"? Granted, the bridge is old, but so are a lot of other bridges. So why HERE, why NOW? Remember, there ARE no co-incidences..... Rose, I took a snip of the new Madrid states and although we are not officially amongst them we feel the effects as if we were. The Mods have to approve the snip so in the mean time you can click here and go about half way down the page and see the image of Oklahoma I'm talking about. [link to showme.net] I apologize for saying we were part of it. But you DO remember that we had a couple recently that scared the hell out of us- we're used to tornadoes. 4.3 EQ Oct 10th [link to articles.cnn.com] 850 EQ's in Oklahoma County between Jan 2010 and March 2011. According to the Geological Survey, there were a total of six earthquakes in Oklahoma County from 2000 through 2008. The uptick began in 2009, when monitoring equipment recorded 31 earthquakes in the county. Over the ensuing 15 months -- January 2010 through March 2011 -- Holland says there were 850 earthquakes, just in Oklahoma County. "To put that into perspective," Holland said, "the most earthquakes we'd ever recorded in a single year in [the entire state of] Oklahoma was 167." The majority of the tremors have not been strong enough to be felt, but more than 100 have. (The threshold, above which earthquakes, generally, are said to be 'felt,' is around 2.5 on the Richter scale.) And Holland believes the number is probably higher, presuming that, as the quakes became more common, residents would have been less inclined to report those of lower magnitudes. Hi Miggy! You know, I had wondered about that myself. But it IS true that OK has been experiencing more noticeable earthquakes lately, at least according to the threads here. It has occurred to me that the Earth (meaning the foundational rock structure) is most likely porous, (not solid), and has many underground caves and tunnels which may have been full of water or oil etc. Now that there are so many more people, and especially in a desert-type area where the wells need to be really deep, maybe that water is being pumped out faster than it can re-fill leaving hollow spots. Seems like those spots would ring like a bell if there were a huge earthquake further East. So yes, I could see where you WOULD be affected by the New Madrid. Considering that they are still finding faultlines which they never before knew existed, it wouldn't surprise me to discover that the whole CONTINENT could be affected by the New Madrid's letting loose!! Anonymous Coward User ID: 1258755 United States 09/10/2011 02:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes it is the wisest thing to do by approximate safety weight limits according to the design of any structure.. And the age of the construction VS the weight of average vehicles that load the structure in current times.. And now factor in the uneven wgt distribution on top of non-flowing traffic jamming and remaining with weights that may indeed go over the safety amount..... Now consider that the precise time of jamming comes in the advent of a natural disaster striking many years after the A-OK for App.Wgt. capacity.....this is the worst time to jam it and the absolute guaranteed time it will occur...chaos..hysteria...flight is the response to something a human can not stand up to not fight.. Now consider how Gov...and rescue & aid workers will be able to respond when their routes are disabled... Now consider which is the most rewarding..healthy tax payers..working citizens...responsible people that give assistance when needed to help them selves ...help maintain others....help repair and prevent further losses and devastation.... Or incapacitated people left to be of no help even for themselves. And to add salt to wounds when people are incapacitated in and area that breaks out into civilian chaos. Looting... rouging.....vandalizing..flat out ravaging.. It is a good head who would make sure to secure the entry and the exit of such a point in even so much as just a possibility .....something like a disaster may strike.. When you see this it could be bad bridge find during routine inspection and no one willing to take the blame for eventual devastation stemming from covering up or ignoring the flat out safety violation......or it can be preparation for a spike in disaster possibility...either way it must be done and it should be done. |

As a result the pent-up seismic force keeps growing. My latest reading is that by mid-day Saturday, Sept. 10, the Cabal earthquake-engineering devices will no longer be able to hold back the massive release of pent-up energy within the tectonic plate underneath the Appalachians any longer. And thus, on Saturday, sometime between 11 am and 2 pm EDT local time (more likely 1:15-1:45 pm EDT), a massive magnitude 10.0 Mega-Quake will occur. Its epicenter will be around Federal Square, Petersburg, WV 26847: (38 degrees, 59', 49.92 N. Lat.; 79 degrees, 07',31.01 W. Long). Corresponding Saturday Quake times in other time zones will be around: 10:30 am, PDT; 17:30 GMT/UTC; and 6:30 pm, BST. A Magnitude 10.0 earthquake has never occurred before. For instance, Reelfoot Lake was created from liquefaction, as a result of the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquake. BTW, that's located in NW TN. "According to the United States Geological Survey, Reelfoot Lake was formed when the region subsided during the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811–1812.[1] Several eyewitnesses[2] reported that the Mississippi River flowed backward for 10–24 hours to fill the lake, but it is most likely that waves from the quake caused the river to appear to flow upstream. The earthquakes resulted in several major changes in the landforms over a widespread area with shocks being felt as far away as Quebec."
