"In social networks, an asteroid the size of an aircraft carrier will pass between the Earth and the moon, and it has nothing to do with Comet Elenin. This space rock is named 2005 YU55, it will come within a distance of 326,740km. Astronomers say that this is the closest that an asteroid has come to our planet since 1976.

Despite scientists designating this object as potentially hazardous, there is no reason to fear. On Facebook, there are comments that suggest that Comet Elenin’s tail could push YU55’s trajectory off course, and redirect it towards our planet. However, Comet Elenin’s tail is less dense than the smoke of a cigarette.

In an initial estimation, it was believed that the asteroid had a diameter of 400 meters. Recently, the website SpaceWeather.com, which is a NASA website, published that the diameter is 175 meters and its orbit around the sun is of 14 years. The asteroid will come closest to our planet on November 8, 2011 at 23:28 hrs. This poses a bigger threat than Elenin since it YU55 will pass between the Moon and the Earth. These asteroids are potentially dangerous, because their encounters with planets such as ours could have devastating consequences.

The Asteroid 2005 YU55 was discovered by Spacewatch of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory at the University of Tucson, Arizon. Said celestial object, will be the one with the greatest magnitude that has approached our planet since 1976. The next one will take place in 2028.

The website, The Times of India, calculates that if this asteroid were to impact, it would be the equivalent of 65,000 atomic bombs. It would leave a crater greater than 10km wide, and half a km deep. One of the greatest extinctions ever, affected life on Earth during the Triassic Period. And let us not forget the impact at Chicxulub in the Yucatan Peninsula which occurred 65 million years ago, and ended the dinosaur era, which dominated for 100,000 million years. The asteroid that made the dinosaurs extinct was 10km. Asteroid 2005 YU55, measures only 175 meters in comparison. However, for statistic purposes, an impact like that of Chicxulub will occur sooner than later. The question is; do humans possess the technology to deter an asteroid of that size.

Asteroids typically reside in the neighborhood between Mars and Jupiter in the area known as the Asteroid Belt. But the approximation of YU55 is the closest approach of a potentially hazardous asteroid we’ve had since 1976, when the Asteroid 1976 AA which measured 130 meters came within a similar distance. The reality is that our planet will witness the impact of a potentially hazard asteroid sooner than later.

The Asteroid 2005 YU55 is classified “potentially hazardous”. Not surprising, astronomers already have its trajectory well calculated. It will not impact our planet as many claim on social networks. Asteroid 2005 YU55 will be visible on November 8, 2011."

Wouldn't it be neat if YU55 got caught by the moon and became a moon of the moon.

This will sound crazy. But i remember being at a relatives 40th birthday party when i was about 11/12. Thinking what would i be doing for my 40th. This inner voice said 'don't worry, you won't be here'. I turn 40 on 8th November this year!!

Where did you read that NASA said GRAIL was military?
BTW, I spoke with a coworker who is recently ex-NASA (yeah, and I don't care what you think, so save your whining about your uncle, etc...) and I flat out asked why GRAIL would leave a few days ago on that Delta II, then arrive on New Year's, when we got Apollo 13 to the moon in a few days.

He said that with Apollo, they were constrained by keeping the astronauts alive. He also said that in this case they may be trading speed for energy usage. I asked what NASA needed to save on energy for, I mean, we're talking about a one-time acceleration. Why do you need to smell the daisies on the way to the Moon? Why not just get GRAIL there and park 'em or orbit 'em??

I asked if he thought that GRAIL was going to look at something else... that was a wasted question.

Near-Earth asteroid 2005 YU55 will pass within 0.85 lunar distances from the Earth on November 8, 2011. The upcoming close approach by this relatively large 400 meter-sized, C-type asteroid presents an excellent opportunity for synergistic ground-based observations including optical, near infrared and radar data.

An animated illustration by JPL shows the Earth and moon flyby geometry for November 8th and 9th when the object will reach a visual brightness of 11th magnitude and should be easily visible to observers in the northern and southern hemispheres.

The closest approach to Earth and the Moon will be respectively 0.00217 AU and 0.00160 AU on 2011 November 8 at 23:28 and November 9 at 07:13 UT.

I don’t believe in coincidences…

Call me paranoid, but I believe our Government believes that there is a chance that this Asteroid will hit the Earth or the Moon and is getting prepared just in case.
