How will society benefit if gay marriage is allowed?

The justification for gay marriage is: It will stop a few people from bitching and "gift giving amongst about 1% of the population will increase?" That is not a satircal or rhetorical question. Am I understanding the answers correctly? How does m/f marriage benefit us?
