What it portends for a possible 2012 presidential run is anyone's guess. Paul had a similar cult-like following during the 2008 election, only to garner a relatively small chunk of the actual vote. Main stream media slagging off Ron Paul, doesn't look like controlled opposition to me on the other hand the proofs is in the pudding if Ron Paul is controlled opposition or not. The American people have proven to stay away from rioting to show their discontent. The public is also very divided though between Obama supporters, conservatives, teabaggers and Ron Paul supporters. Things could go in all kinds of directions
