Also remember that areas above the Arctic circle every year has periods of "total darkness", meaning the sun is under the horizon for periods that spans from a couple days to months depending on how far north you go (same on the southern hemisphere.) In such areas as the Finnmark plain where native people live temperatures can drop to minus 55 deg C on clear nights in the middle of the winter, but typically the sun would have been below the horizon for weeks for this to develop. You'd see similar conditions in Siberia and Alaska. |
