it may have skipped out of orbit assuming it hit weird i guess its mathematically possible NASA actually uses a entry vector to slow craft into orbits around other planets id assume if it gained enough speed in its decay orbit it could exit orbit.

most likely though its caused buy how they are getting the altitude relative to the earth.
