You are looking at pictures of a house that Simon Dale built for his family in Wales. It was built by him and his father in law with help from passers by and visiting friends. 4 months after starting they were moved in and cosy. He estimate 1000-1500 man hours and $5000 put in to this point. Not really so much in house buying terms (roughly £60/sq m excluding labour).

Pictures in the article:

It's stunning what you can accomplish:

“Main tools used: chainsaw, hammer and 1 inch chisel, little else really. Oh and by the way I am not a builder or carpenter, my experience is only having a go at one similar house 2yrs before and a bit of mucking around inbetween. This kind of building is accessible to anyone. My main relevant skills were being able bodied, having self belief and perseverence and a mate or two to give a lift now and again. "

That's awesome. I want one. That guy obviously came up with the design right after watching The Lord of the Rings. I had $5000 myself a few weeks ago, I shoulda built a house instead of moving to Hawaii! On second thought, no, definitely did the right thing...

It's beautiful isn't it?

Well I'd love a house like this but if I had to chose between a hobbit style house and living in the paradise that is Hawaii ... that's kind of a no brainer.

Luckily/ sadly I don't have to chose.

How did he find a chick that was cool with living in a hobbit shack? That's damn near impossible.

Cool place, but I think it was £3,000 GBP originally therefore the conversion is roughly $5,000 dollars

I did this in the USA when I lived there. I built my home, very similar for $8,000. BUT. I soon found I could not get home or contents insurance as I did not meet some codes. I then got fined for not getting full compliance to codes. I was fined $25,000 for refusing to get power hooked up, and another $10,000 fine for not using the city sewerage. I was then fined $50,000 in environmental damages due to my septic tank/compost heap. I was fined $20,000 for using solar cells without getting city permission. I was then fined $15,000 for collecting rainwater. THEN I was fined $35,000 for farming my own food. Things just didn't work out for me in the land of the free.
