Why do many paintings depicting people with power show them holding metallic "orbs" or "spheres"?
If you look at paintings of past rulers like Queen Victoria, Elizabeth 1 or any other kings and queens (from mainly European Countries) in the past - they've ALL been depicted with holding some sort of metallic orbs/spheres in their painting.

A few Examples:

Queen Victoria - UK

Queen Elizabeth II - UK

Queen Elizabeth I - UK

Denmark Royal Family Orb

This is probably something from the Assassin Creed game I picked up because apparently it shows them holding "pieces of eden" which are basically ancient Extra Terrestrial orbs with some sort of advanced power.

Besides the game's explanation and the official mainstream explanation which is that they "symbolise power", whats the REAL significance of them holding metallic spheres or orbs?

According to Wikipedia: [link to en.wikipedia.org]

It's called The Sovereign's Orb--part of the Crown Jewels of The United Kingdom.

"The Orb is a religious symbol; it represents the Monarch's role as Defender of the Faith and as Supreme Governor of the Church of England."

In game these orbs were used to " control masses' minds "
and explains why religion spread so quickly.

Actually this game has the best conspiracy I've ever seen, explains too much thing even though a fiction, it looks pretty realistic idea.

This is the exoteric meaning they want you to glean from the pictures. The REAL meaning, the esoteric meaning, the truth being hidden from you, is that the person(s) holding the orbs of light are members of the Order, the Brotherhood, Illuminati, insert secret society here. The mystery schools. They have been "enlightened" because they are holding the ball of light. Unlike you or me, they believe that they alone are enlightened and the rest of us are just animals. It is a code, a kind of secret language amongst the priests and adepts of ancient "mystery" schools.

Humans from the future visiting (but not tampering) in past recorded events. The events when these 'time travellers' do end up messing things up, such as being seen or crashing is when a time-slip happens, or they get drawn in paintings such as these.

The Christian orb, one with the cross atop it, is supposed to symbolize Christs dominion over the earth.

Re: Why do many paintings depicting people with power show them holding metallic "orbs" or "spheres"?
I always thought of it as They have the world in the palm of their hand.
Only in darkness do you find light,
Only in bright do you find night.

To become awakened and enlightened, one must first experience awakening and enlightening events. Once you have experienced an event, and consciously accepted it, you are now awake. Follow the path of your own choosing and upon completion, you are enlightened. Each step in that path that you chose; each experience you go through; are all like stepping stones leading to the Enlightened "Tree"
Your path following those small stepping stones, result in a large outcome; for the wanderer on a spiritual journey, the result is Enlightenment.
