Quoting: archery mom ![]() I grew up in a household where speaking properly was expected, debate was an entertaining pastime, and reading was enjoyed. Although I've mellowed over the years and try not to jump down people's throats anymore about obvious grammatical errors, it does concern me that such basic errors are so commonplace. Your thoughts are welcome: Do you think people make such errors out of laziness (just not paying attention), ignorance, or deliberately? If deliberately, why? If in ignorance, how can people go through at least 12 years of school and not learn this basic information? Comma not needed. I'm in. |

If in ignorance, how can people go through at least 12 years of school and not learn this basic information? GREAT to meet a fellow G-Nazi! Laziness, yes; ignorance, yes; deliberately, perhaps, just to make a G-Nazi mad! Now admittedly, I have made a mistake here and there when posting on boards, and it bothers me, especially if there's no edit function. Mistakes happen, but I don't understand why someone posts in all lower-case letters, or doesn't use commas or periods, or cannot spell "their" instead of "there". And I too, have wondered how anyone who receives even the most basic education, cannot understand and employ the most basic grammatical skills. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1295808 ![]() 10/01/2011 11:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm with you OP - I don't correct people, but poor grammar is a reflection of your upbringing and education, and doesn't get you very far if you work in a professional setting. I can happily ignore typos, as everyone makes them, but poor grammar is another matter. I believe it is not about being lazy, rather, it's a reflection of the inner self. When people put up with sub-standard communication, then that flows in to putting up with sub-standard everything else - namely education system, government decrees, banking cartels and everything else where it is possible to be lorded over. Take back ownership of your self and your destiny with good grammar, one comma, or period, at a time. |

Take back ownership of your self and your destiny with good grammar, one comma, or period, at a time. I couldn't agree more. Anyone can make an occasional error, but when I see a paragraph that gives me a headache just to try and decipher what the person means, all I can think about is how poorly educated the person is. The lack of basic grammatical understanding leads to a questioning of the soundness of the very idea they're attempting to communicate as well (how can you possibly understand the concept of X when you don't even understand the more basic concept properly written language). |

I constantly correct others - and when I do so repeatedly over the same mistakes, I castigate and berate - albeit in a humorous way. A recurring mistake that irks me to no end is ending sentences with the preposition "at". It doesn't get any more trailer park than that. When I over-hear a person on their cell exclaim, "Where are you at!" I want to regurgitate. |
