Have you all considered what would happen to the price of your eating-out if your waitstaff was paid a "good living wage" as many of you have mentioned? Your "2 for $20" special that you enjoy so much at Chili's / Applebee's / Friday's / Tchotchke's etc, just increased in price to "2 for $40" or "2 for $55". Enjoy your date night!

Allow me to dissect/translate:

it's up to you. i don't (tip) cause if they want the money, the get another job.

Tips were created when restaurants figured out a way not to pay theyre employees . You should watch the opening scene to reservoir dogs to get a lesson from some 'tuff guyz' on this. I'd embed it but I'm feeling lazy.

Re: Should you tip your server's "just because" ?
The fact is that the servers depend on tips to make their living, not on the $2 an hour they are paid in salary. In fact they are reported to the IRS as making minimum wage ($7+/hr.) so if you don't tip them, it actually costs them money to wait on you.

If you don't have the money to include a reasonable tip (15% for reasonably good service) then you don't have enough money to eat out. Also don't screw them for not being a mind reader or for some imagined slight.

The servers aren't there to wait on you for free. They are WORKING. They wouldn't be there if it meant they would earn $16 for an eight hour shift.
 Quoting: AuthorAuthor

First off, nice try ahole giving me pity story, of they depend on tips to make a living

lets first take a look at your irs tax you on minimum wage

1 issue, rather large as sun issue.
am not a dumbass and i know minimum wage laws

their allowed to go as low as 2.xx buck range, if your IN FACT getting more tips to make you earn more per hour then everyone else making mini wage.
Øh

1 issue with that, but its fixed by the law
what if tips are not their, and their only paying you 2.xx whatever a hour

the law says if you not getting tips to make you make above legal limit, you must be paid more by employer whatever amount to make you meet that

me not tipping is not costing you a fucking penny, you stupid son of a bitch and lair!

The federal tip credit is $5.12. per hr. A employer is allowed to pay servers $2.13 because they are claiming servers will make at least $5.12 an hour in tips. if their not, they have to pay the waiter x amount them self's to they meet the legal mini wage.

so, now i got the flat out lie your being taxed full mini wage, but not making it out of story
your now seen as what you are, a lair.

i will go out to eat and Never ever tip , as i have seen you for what you are, aholes don't deserve a job, as you bite the hand that feeds you"demand" is what makes you even have a job. i go out to eat, and glady, know am supporting your ass, even if your a ungrateful bitch who thinks other wise

to the guy who said, cant wait for robots to take over and be our servers, omfg i wish for same
the day everyone of these ungrateful people are out of work, is day of heavy
no more cold food, as the server not their to pack it up
no more of them spitting in our drinks, food
the future can't come faster for us wanting to be free of supporting these dumbwits

Used to work at a popular mid range restaurant in Greensboro, NC called Darryl's. It's how I got through college. We had a saying that after 10:30PM, you're working for free.

That's when Greensboro's "brothas and sistas" would come in, camp out in a section until 1AM, eating All You Can Eat Babyback Ribs, drop a wad of cash on food, and leave a pile of bones on the table and greasy napkins on the floor.

Search in vain for the tip under all that my friend. It's not there.

Here's the deal. Tipping based upon the total ticket is silly. Does it take any more effort to bring a filet mignon than it does a couple fried eggs? Methinks not.

People remember to tip the barista. People remember to tip the waitress. Heck they even remember to tip the bellhop...

...But most people forget to tip the housekeeper that cleans up your piss stains and pubic hairs for $2.25 PER ROOM x 12-15 rooms per day. Average weekly tips = $6.00 per week.

Ya, I do feel resentment when people tip the waitress just because. Please people, the next time you go to a motel/hotel/resort tip your housekeeper just because.

I tip depending on how good the service was. Mediocre service will usually warrant 10-15%, good service 20% and excellent (far above average) 25% or so.

Shit service and I'll leave a couple bucks.

If the waiter/waitress is a real SOB (which does happen) I'll leave a penny. Much more insulting than nothing.

Re: Should you tip your server's "just because" ?
I was a waiter while in college and everyone was given the same service. However, over time the people that did not tip properly, so bad it was almost insulting where you would rather them not tip at all. I did find myself not going out of my way and giving them the excellent service the good tippers did get from us as a whole. The word tip itself means "to insure proper service". You should look at the state minimum wage for serves and understand they are typically not receiving much per hour they survive on tips. It is like someone expecting you to do your job with a smile yet knowing you are not going to be paid a fair wage for your time. The op in this thread sounds like a cheap and miserable person. Perhaps he or she should look at what is wrong in their life and try not to take it out on probably the people who are at the bottom of the todem poll that are looking to work and better themselves. Hell, now some of these same people come into my office looking for a service and I refuse to budge on my set prices, although for many I do depending on the circumstances they are under.

Am getting real sick of leaving a tip to your server "just because" some other's think you "should"

why should we reward people who suck at their job?

by tipping we are just rewarding bad behavior so next costumers get same level of service.

what's everyone else thought's on this matter of leaving a tip or not

what's make we even more mad, is i seem off the clock people who are server's,
bitchin about a 10% or less tip.
my god i order 50 bucks of food,, and you bitch about a 5 buck tip,
i have facebook 'friends" that take a pic and upload it of high tabs, but the server only got 2 to 10 bucks, omfg these evil leeching bastards.

will fuck you and all your kind, no more tips at all then you ungrateful bastards. is how i made up my mind, once i seen how ungrateful these servers really are.

i love it even more, as they are so FAKE!
, first time they act like angels, 2nd time they treat me like dirt, as now their no value to act anymore
as they remb am a no tipper, and they show me who they really are insder , worthless human beings who suck at the job and could give a Damn about doing it. all they want is your money.

best thing we could all do in my mind is no never Ever tip again, make all these worthless human beings show their true colors to everyone , so sooner or later they all replaced with"better" servers.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2209669

i used to be a waitress

if they do a good job then yes
if the place is busy then sometimes they cant always give the best service
but you can still see if they are trying
its how they survive

now if they really suck and have a bad attitude then no

Waitresses and Waiters are generally paid minimum wage plus Tips.

Okay, you need to understand that the first 8% of the days receipts is taken from the Servers paycheck because the IRS assumes at least that much was made in tips and says to do this. If you do not tip, the Server ends up in the hole and sure as h*ll can't support their own self let alone a family on a less than minimum wage check. It didn't use to be that way back when I did that kind of work. The IRS just got smart and stopped believing us Servers were making such paltry tips...and we were...at least I was...but prove it...

I'll tell you, if I only made minimum wage as a Server I would of quit that kind of work QUICK. It is very demanding and well worth more than being paid minimum.

So get over yourself and stop complaining about bad service and what the Servers say as long as your not going to tip the usual amount of 15 to 20% - of which the first 8% is gone to the tax man. If you are stingy with one Server, well then Karma's going to get you and give you a crappy Server the next time around and for the next 9 times after that..

Servers make less than minimum wage legally if they collect tips.

If you don't tip, you are not paying someone for work they have done, it's simple.

A reasonable tip for standard service in the USA is 15-20% of the check before taxes added.

Re: Should you tip your server's "just because" ?
I would have no problem NOT tipping if the waitstaff made at least min wage. They make 2.00/hr and have to clean when there are not tables.

It seems a good fix would be forcing employers to pay at least min wage.

My wife had to waitress for a time due to no jobs (we are both college graduates) and trying to make a mortgage. The people who demanded the most and the elderly hardly ever tipped...She had decent nights but also (at times) made less than $10 on a full shift.

If you cant tip- Don't eat out.
 Quoting: Penguin 2663578

I would just add my .02 cents worth, I agree if you can't or won't tip 15-20 % then don't go where you are served.
 Quoting: s. d. butler

You might want to check the labor laws on that. One place I worked didn't pay minimum and one of my co-workers turned the employer into the labor board. We employees ended up with much larger paychecks after that PLUS tips.

My fiancee and I are both working for tips right now, and I must say, 90% of the time, it's not the waiter/waitress's fault for shitty service. I've always tipped generously, and even now, when I'm barely scraping by, I still tip 15% as a base, servers don't make enough even with tips, why be an asshole about it? And seriously, if you dont tip for anything else, do it for the karma whoring, everything comes back around.

Re: Should you tip your server's "just because" ?
OP probably goes out to restaurants and slugs diet cokes as fast as you can bring them. When you walk up to the table and ask him how he's doing, he probably just says "diet coke" and then adds some dumb shit to his order like "with a lime" or "extra ice" to make him sound special.

You bring him his drink and put a bevnap down and he grabs the drink before you can set it on the table and just slams it through the straw and then sets it down loudly and slides it to the edge of the table. He asks about the ribeye. Before you can explain the dish he asks what how many sides it gets. You recite the menu to him. He makes a face. He orders it well done while he mutters something about how expensive it is. You dont have the side he just tried to order. Its not even on the menu. You apologize and make a recommendation. "Fine. Just whatever it comes with." He tosses the menu to the other side of the table, just out of your reach. Before he notices how rude he's coming across he reminds you that his diet coke is empty, as if you didn't stand there and watch him suck it down. He didn't even use the lime that you had to go get from the bar. You go grab another diet before you ring in the order. When you get back to the table to deliver it, he says " Don't I get bread or something with this?" You tell him that you will be right back with it. He pulls out his phone and starts talking as if there is no one in the room but him.

You put down the bread. He says he's going to need more butter.

And his diet coke is empty again.

The line is getting full, your kitchen is starting to back up... Everyone else has a good section. You have two empty booths and OP. You keep watching the clock... that ribeye taking forrevvvvvverrrrrr.

Finally it comes up. You bring it to OP. He doesn't even look up you, still on the phone. You stand there for a few seconds, making sure he doesn't need anything. No eye contact. Still rambling.

You start to walk away, and as soon as you get out of the way you hear "excuse me, excuse me may I have some Heinz 57, ketchup and A1?" You say of course and watch him destroy his $21.95 well done char-grilled ribeye.

He says it was OK, but kinda tough and dry. You apologize and ask him if he'd like to speak to a manager. Of course he says no, but he asks for the check...

After seeing that the diet coke and ribeye together are over $21.95 he sighs. You start to walk away and he stops you. Awkwardly, you watch him fumble around with his card trying so slip it in the check presenter. Finally he hands it to you. You run the card, and and put the check presenter down. He asks for the check early, but as soon as you start to walk away he hands you his dirty plate as if it was in the way the entire time.

Thats ok though, your done serving him.

Oh wait, he's flagging you down. Guess what he wants....

Diet coke and a lime to go.....

You know how it ends. OP tips nothing... You know what sucks though? Your early out. A lot of big tops tonight. Not in your section. Your cut. You run your reports and since OP didnt tip you, your negative because of the credit card machine...( the tip refund.) Nice, you made negative 31 cents. Whatever, at least you can get out of here early.

Oh wait, everyone else was busy. The restaurant is a fucking mess. Ohhhhh and all that sidework. Awesomeeeee. After another hour of that bullshit, your boss asks you to come in early to serve a 32 top in the morning. Of old women. You know what that means... coffeeeeessssssssssss! Seperate checks! Low check averages! Special orders!

Heres the best part... when you go to clock out, it forces you to declare more than $0.00 ! Even though you OP cost you .30 cents, Uncle SAM needs his.

We tip them well because we get good service.

Depends on the state, here in CA servers make $8 an hour just like everyone else. The tips they receive are on top of the hourly wage.

If you think about it here in CA your server is most likely making $15 an hour or so off meager tips. I cap the percentage i tip at 10% because it isn't very hard to bring a plate of food to my table, i dont plan on running you around in fact i will try to be as little of a bother as possible.

I personally feel tipping should no longer be the accepted "norm" but rather a reward for good service. I got a tire patched and plugged the other day under warranty, i paid the shop absolutely nothing for the work they did. Should i have tipped the guy who patched my shit just because he did his job? FUCK NO, do your goddamn job and if you go above and beyond i might want to hook you up but dont expect shit beside a smile and a thank you.

I have heard stories of servers chasing bad tippers to the parking lot to confront them. If this happened to me i would ASSURE that the server was unemployed by nights end and quite possibly icing their concussion when they lump home.

Re: Should you tip your server's "just because" ?
$2.13 an hour.

Nuff said.

Wow you are an asshole too.
There are 49 other states besides California.
I make less than 20k and I tip well, all the time. Why, because I am a decent fucking human being.

You, not so much.

Then tip EVERYONE that offers you a service if your such a good human:
Mailman
Meter Readers
street sweepers
garbage men
cops (while they write a ticket because that is a service)
the AAA driver
crossing gaurds
bank tellers
I could keep going but you get the point.

Also i saw someone else mention it, what makes it so much more difficult to carry a Fillet Mignon compared to a burger that justifies the extra $$$ on the tip?

When i go out with the wife the bill is about $60 after both entrees and a drink or two and maybe desert. Is a $6 tip not worth the maybe 5 total minutes you actually spent on my table?

Lets say we got our food and was done in about an hour, here in CA my server would have made their $8 wage and a $6 tip from just me. Not including any other potential tips we are already at $14 an hour, Jesus fucking Christ that's with only 1 fucking table@!@!@!

Not to mention servers do get to take their tips home the same night, that means cash in your pocket EVERYDAY and room to fudge uncle Sam ( If you think servers report all of their cash tips your a fucking moron, if it isn't on a CC then the pocket is the last report )

So honestly if you feel like a decent human for being a dumb shit go right ahead, maybe in your bum fuck state servers are paid 2.14 an hour. Personally i wouldn't frequent any restaurant that was participating in slave labor, so who's the decent human now shit bird?

Re: Should you tip your server's "just because" ?
