Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
This is why I just love these get a job people. And these you should pay cash for a house and car people.

Let say a kid gets out of college with a degree and finds a job or jobs. Right now 40,000 a year would be huge for most to find and probably very unlikely for a graduate, but we will use this number.

So after taxes, ss, state tax if you have one, medical, dental, life, medicare etc

Your bring home is about 1300-1200 every 2 weeks
This is 2600-2400 a month.

Ok let’s pay some bills.

Monthly

Rent 750-Very modest guess. All know some will lower, higher
Car 200- very low cheap car.
Car insurance 100 for decent
150 electricity-- very low for most
50 for gas if you have it.
100 for vehicle gas.

No cable or internet cause we don't want to live to great.
No cell phones because we can't afford this luxury.

Groceries
400 a month.

This is not eating out at all or getting anything from quicky mart. This is very modest considering prices now.

You were on the precipice of something great, but you jumped instead of declaring victory at the top.

The point of your entire post is living within your means.

Nowhere does is state we DESERVE a new car, a new house, a cell phone, Internet, game stations, LCD televisions, movies or eating out.
Those are LUXURIES that seem to have become NECESSITIES that you now demand as BASICS.

Teach these kids to live within their means and great things happen.

So we are at 1750. From 2600 using the high number this leaves us about 850, but wait. We went to college.

So since we didn't come from rich parents we have to pay for that. Let's say we go to a small cheap school and work part time to pay the room and board.

2000 a semester. Very low price compared to 90%

4 years of school. By the way it is almost impossible to get a 4 year degree anymore, especially while working.

So 4000 a year x 4 years is 16000.

16000 is about a 400 payment a month on student loans.

Now we are up to 2150 - 2600 leaves us about 450 extra.

We are not including any movies, out to eat, up keep on car, pops-candy, lawn care for rent house, medical bills for co-pay, etc.

Hell we will round it up to a big $500 a month extra. Now let’s start saving so we can pay cash and not borrow.

First we need a house and car.

Modest house 150,000. NO LAND besides lot and this probably doesn't exist in price in most places.

So $500 a month savings = $6000 a year.

So it will only take 25 years to save cash for a house at this price.
But wait--in 25 years that house will cost twice that because of inflation.
So 50 years.

Ok let’s get a car.
3 years = 18000 which will buy a piece of shit. These cars normally last 5 years maybe a little more, and they are worth shit nothing when you try to sell them back.

So we get a trade in for $6000 after seven years with the first car we bought. We have to buy a car every 7 years at 18,000.

We will need around 4 cars for the next 28 years, first one being bought for full price. 18000 + 12000 + 12000 + 12000

Hell this is only $54,000. That is another 9 years of saving on top of the 50 for the house. Plus we only figured the cars for 28 years not counting inflation.

So with the math if we started when we are 22 we might have enough cash for a house and keep our cars paid for in cash by the time we are 80 or more.

We won't be able to retire or afford anything else, but by God WE WON’T BE BUMS.

So all you people saying that you pay cash for all your shit and are not in debt are either full of complete shit or came into money somewhere. I suspect most of you got your cash from your momma and you are the true bums. Some of you might have worked your way up the ladder, but at what cost. Some might have built a successful business and are very lucky because if you tried that shit now you would be screwed.

Point being in this long ass post.

Quit blaming these kids. Go get a job is not going to fix shit and you know it. Do the math. Slavery is the end game and they got it.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
The math of income/expenses for young people just starting out today is very very different from what it was when I was younger.

Back then pay was not only good, it was GREAT ... if you were willing to work, no matter what your educational background was. Government jobs were there for the asking, at great pay, factory jobs were there for the asking, at great pay, if you had an education it was no trouble to land a great well paying job.

Back then expenses were a LOT less ... as an example a friend decided not to go to college and bought a small 3 BR ranch in a great middle class area with full walk out basement for $10,000, an amount he had saved up while working PART TIME in High School!!

Taxes ... oh were they lower, much lower. Both sides of Social Security was 1.35%, which meant that one's TOTAL Social Security (Medicare did not exist) tax on one's wages was only 2.7% (today you are looking at approximately 20% - and the employer's share needs to be added in since that is still money coming out of YOUR paycheck).

Small consumables and hardgoods (clothing/small appliances/ used vehicles), adjusted for inflation, were more expensive back then than they are today, but everything else was cheaper, particularly housing and utilities.

One item that I am noticing because of two college age kids, Higher Education. Back then a kid could make enough money working at just a summer full time job to pay ALL the expenses of a year of college at a RESIDENTIAL State University, plus pay for a car and ALL living and entertaining expenses. I know I did that just being on a housepainting crew in the summer (not even having to work at a higher paying factory job! - I hated factory work). Getting out of college Debt Free was the norm, not the exception ... and then there was a great paying job just for the picking at the end.

Today those early in life jobs pay less than they did 20 years ago while everything else costs at least double. Having just "a job" doesn't cut it anymore.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
College is a waste of money..

I was a druggie from 17-25 and I finally grew up and wanted to be a responsible human being so I grew up at 25. I wanted to do something that I liked to do.. I love cars and I love interacting with people so I got a job selling cars at Saturn about 6-7 years ago and made 40k-50k until they closed about 3 years ago.. Thanks gm.. So I got a job at infiniti and made 75k last year and am at 55k thus far this year.. I am one of the top guys but I love going to work. It is long hours (50+ a week and every sat) but like I said I love doing what I do.. My wife never finished college also and she in branch manager at a small local bank making close to 60k

My sister on the other hand has a degree from fordam university (great ivy leave school) and she makes $45k in her 6 year in the work field at Morgan Stanley and my brother has a degree from rutgers and he makes $13 a hour selling car parts..

So moral of the story is my wife and I with no college make more then most peope with a piece of paper that costs 200k for my sister at fordam and 120k for my bro at rutgers..

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
Now, you just have to take a smarter route to what you want to do.

They want everyone in debt. Don't put yourself in that situation. There are other ways
 Quoting: ThirdEyeBrown

Explain how there are other ways.

 Quoting: BigNutChuck

Do your homework on each and every expense in your life and find the best, cheapest option.

In the OP's original post, he refered to an $18,000 car as a "piece of shit".

You can buy an extremely reliable, comfortable 3 to 5 year old car for that amount IF you do your homework, educate yourself and take your time shopping.

Or you could make do with an old, ugly, beat up 10 year old car, and save the $8,000 to $13,000 price difference.

And what do you call an $18,000 car with some cosmetic body damage? You call it a $10,000 car. And thus in exchange for suffering the humiliation of driving an ugly car, you pocket the difference.

Let go of thinking about a car -- or your address, or any product -- as being any kind of a reflection on you as a person, live humbly below your means.

The whole attitude of the OP's post, characterised by the statement that an $18,000 car is necessarily a piece of shit, illustrates the lack of nitty-gritty it takes to choose wisely and flourish free from debt.

Educate yourself on each and every expense in your life!

Conciously choose to "make do" with where you live or what you drive, rather than give a damn about the prestige or humiliation associated with it.

Freedom from debt does come at a "price" -- and that price is called Delayed Gratification. And it is called Humility.

Oh, but sweet, sweet freedom it is.

 Quoting: goodmockingbird

No my whole idea of calling a 18,000 car a piece of shit is because now days they are complete pieces of shit that are made not to last on purpose.

Plastic crap that you might get 7 years out of.

You say find a used car. Ok well they have been making these cars not to last for a while now. Why? So you have to buy another one. Same reason that when you drive it off the lot the car is now worth half what you paid for it.

I agree about going through stuff, but I did not see any conclusion that would leave someone debt free. No matter what you say there is nothing a kid now days can do to get ahead without borrowing a lot of money.

Only I guess a trust fund.

P.S. Even with your logic you still are slaved to debt. 150,000 house is about as cheap as you get in most places.

My bad it cost as much as a ivy leave so I figured it was.. Why did I always think that ..

The point to my story is you do not college as long as you find something you love to do and then market yourself and love to be at your job..
I also love my job because I get rewarded for my work where other jobs where they pay by the hour you get no incentives to do better then anyone else..

And my dad (who immigrated here and has made a very good life for himself and us 4 kids). He always said that if you go to school then you get a car.. Sister went to fordam got a BMW (used 318ti) bro went to rutgers and got a jetta and youngest sis is in school and got a civic (as you can tell the cars got cheaper and cheaper but he is still providing and he always had it in his head the college was the answer..
I had to pay for my own car (Acura ) and got no money for school.

He did help me out and gave us some money toward the purchase of our first home a couple years ago. But if he gave my sister $200k for a home instead of school and she started working right from hs she would prob be in a better situation then she is now.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
The point in 'get a job' is to motivate people to 'make a job'.

It is up to individuals to create jobs in America. If people choose not to risk and be an employee all their life, well fine. Live in an apartment and ride the bus then.

America is about excellence. People need to create businesses and employ others. Few can start life this way, but anyone can finish this way.

Then you pay cash for a car and a house.

Nobody has a right to have a car or a house. They have a right to work for it.
 Quoting: Apocalypse Troll

How does one create jobs right now? You say start a business. How without borrowing?

No bank will loan on business unless it is 20% or more interest and 20% down.

The government is not helping through the sba.

You say people need to create business and by this they create jobs. I agree except for there is no way to create business, so there are no jobs.

The people that have the money to invest, to start business are not doing it.

You clearly have zero clue how banks function, then and now. Also you're "math" in your original post is composed of un-educated guessing around tax rates and costs of living. Each state is vastly different in this area. Typically, states with higher costs of living offer higher incomes/tax breaks to offset this. As far as your generalized idea about getting a job and paying cash, I have a wife and two children in TN, and we are single income at $10/hr. We have cellphones, internet, and the rest of the bills you listed.

You are right, it is extremely difficult these days, however I don't take a dime of welfare to make things happen when it comes to supplying a roof and food. It's called hard work in hard times. Americans, historically, have gotten shit done via this method. Nowadays people want the givernment to hand some shit out to make things easier. It all started will bloated and ever-growing welfare. That's where it will end. Folks need to feel what running on survival instinct is like. This has been forgotten.

It's not easy, but it's doable. I applaud your attempt at bitching, but it's a tad misplaced.

The true solution is to End the Federal Reserve.

Prosecute the criminals, no matter who they are: banksters, government, etc.

Stop direvatives altogether.

If you don't do the above, we can expect more of the same.

We can't build a future here because our markets are manipulated. We don't know where bottom is in our market.

Housing costs go down where people can afford housing if the bubble is not proped up.

Everything will go down in price if they stop keeping things falsely high.

The easy way to do all of this: VOTE RON PAUL.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
we must all remember that if the banks played by the rules (of LAW) we would not be in this finaical problem. they got overly greedy changed laws after the fact, even flat out stoled money from you , and other countries. the other countries called the banks on the theft and the US goverment bailed the banks out. then left we the people with the tab (no the banks did not really pay back the TARP and 0% loans all back) and the fake morguages.
then pile on the fact that the US goverment has to go to a group of private bankers to even create a simple $1.00 bill at $1.00 plus any interest the bankers want, plus the printing cost. We the people will be ensalved for ever and our childern and thier childern.
This is not how our country was founded. the founding father had fought a war the end this same principle. really folks wake up. read the consitution find out where the money is to come from by the consitution.
read up on A. jackson!, G washington, hell T. Jefferson said it to.

IF THE BANKS CREATE 10 MARBELS AND GIVE THEM TO YOU AT INTEREST. YOU PUT THE 10 MARBELS IN YOUR TIN CUP. LATER THE BANKS ASK FOR 11 MARBELS YOU LOOK IN THE TIN CUP AND SAY THERE ARE ONLY 10 MARBELS. THE BANKS GET MAD TAKE THE 10 MARBELS AND THE TIN CUP. AND STILL SAY YOU OWE 2 MORE MARBELS FOR THE INTEREST AND A FINE.
GOOD LUCK. AND GET A JOB ha ha ha

That should have read repo and not report but isn't that whatyou are if you sold your soul to the bank and loan industry? You are just a well paid report man? You calculated just how much they can afford to pay the interest and when they do, you know from the math your report man will be coming soon.

I do A/V for most of the big banks in NYC, sorry my friend you do not know how theY work or think!

why are we in hardtimes now?
why are the bankers still making their bonueses?
why when banks steal or comit fraud they go free?
it would only take a illness in a family and just making it in HARDTIMES would be turned in to not making it.
so when 10's of thousands of people step up to the bankers to change the way the can cheat you. PLAESE DO NOT HATE THEM. WHY BACK THE BANKERS AND NOT THE PROTESTERS?????
THE BANKERS ARE TAKING YOUR MONEY!
THE PROTESTERS JUST WANT TO BE FREE!!!!!!

 Quoting: BigNutChuck

The more government tries to fix something the worse the social problem becomes. Name one government intervention/program that worked.

Every time this young person gets a check that was already picked clean by needlessly by the government you think his money is free and clear? You left off quite a bit. Most of the blue states have state income taxes also. His phone bill for his cell is taxed, his internet is taxed, his food is taxed, his gasoline is taxed, his car tags and registration tax, tires he buys has tax, tax, his cigarettes, are taxed, his clothing is taxed, when he has a beer after work with friends, taxed! Oh wait, his light bulbs went out, tax! Oh no tolls on the way to work tax!

Oh goodness he gets a cold, go to the store to get some medicine TAX!

So is it the banks or the government that is not giving the kids a chance?
