Another point is that colleges these days are more of a resort than anything. Take High Point for instance ( [link to www.highpoint.edu] ) these schools are fighting over one of the biggest pots of taxpayer backed financing out there.

Guaranteed student loans by the federal Govt. I could go for underwater basket weaving and the government would be more than willing to lend me the $ to do so. Its BS. IT has made the cost of schooling higher for everyone. There are many that didn't need the 4 years afterwords and should have gone for an associates and would have been just fine (see [link to www.lasvegassun.com] Get a MBA years later if you need the tools, the diploma is not what does the work for you, its you and you alone.

I completely agree with the initial thread. Articulated well and that was just one scenario. Just imagine if your family was already poor before all of this happened. Then what? Blame people for not working hard enough? come on...there's a big disproportionate amount of money that the middle class is not receiving and all the blame can't be on the majority of the country. That's basically saying 99% of the USA is stupid. Really? It seems like the only stupid thing was trusting the government would help the country out when the time came. And GLP seems to agree with insulting the 99%.

I myself don't agree with alot of the ows demands, but they are a group we can mold into something great.

I don't want socialism, don't agree with free handouts. But when I see the footer of this website, after being a huge fan of this place for over several years, i get sick. The owner saying occupy a job when there are fewer every day. In a country that is getting worse everyday. Small businesses can't make it either in this day and age. It's scary.

I hear people say there are jobs out there and you can make it by taking two or three jobs. I agree, you can make it......today. It's five years from now that I'm worried about because this scenario won't work any longer.

While we can barely get by today, we won't get by in five years.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
The point in 'get a job' is to motivate people to 'make a job'.

It is up to individuals to create jobs in America. If people choose not to risk and be an employee all their life, well fine. Live in an apartment and ride the bus then.

America is about excellence. People need to create businesses and employ others. Few can start life this way, but anyone can finish this way.
 Quoting: Apocalypse Troll
Actually the "few who start this way" usually always "end this way", and there have been INSTANCES where those who didn't "start this way" might end "this way". And as more and more of THEM "end this way" less and less of US "end this way", because the position of slave is many and the position of slave driver is few. WHAT HAPPENS THEN?

Right now 40,000 a year would be huge for most to find and probably very unlikely for a graduate, but we will use this number.

So after taxes, ss, state tax if you have one, medical, dental, life, medicare etc

Your bring home is about 1300-1200 every 2 weeks
This is 2600-2400 a month.

Ok let’s pay some bills.

Monthly

Rent 750-Very modest guess. All know some will lower, higher
Car 200- very low cheap car.
Car insurance 100 for decent
150 electricity-- very low for most
50 for gas if you have it.
100 for vehicle gas.

No cable or internet cause we don't want to live to great.
No cell phones because we can't afford this luxury.

Groceries
400 a month.

 Quoting: BigNutChuck

Your post is a good one and makes valid points!

If I may adjust those numbers a bit - here in Texas (which is, I think, more reasonable than many places around the country) - it's pretty much impossible to find a decent rent house or apartment in a nice, safe area for less than $1,000 a month and it's going to be closer to $1,200. So let's average that $1,100.

200 is indeed a low payment for a car, but we'll go with that.

Insurance varies, we'll go with your $100.

Electricity here can vary between 100 and 400+ depending on what runs on electric or gas, time of year, etc. Average out at $250

Gas can vary 30 - 125, Average at $75 And you left out water payment which can be 40 - 100 depending on usage. Average at $60

And with the rising prices in stores, $400 a month for groceries is really trimming back.

And $100 for auto gas.

So let' add it up now:
$ 2,285

So you figured the numbers for a college grad.

Let's now apply the numbers to those who simply do not have the chance and/or money to go to college, who are good and decent people (of all ages) who just didn't have the opportunities afforded others (but I guess the haters will call them bums, too) . . .

So they are making $8 an hour.
That's $64 a day.
It's $320 per week minus let's say 25% taxes = bring home: a whopping $240!

That's $12,480 per year.

Now they may or may not have insurance through their job, but if they do, it won't be very comprehensive, and they can't pay for any extra coverage.

And as you pointed out, the above expenses do NOT include cable, phone, entertainment, clothes, auto maintenance, etc.

The annual expenses above total $27,420!

Wow.

So to all the people out there who say to others "just get a damn job, any job you can get and be happy with it! . . . crunch the numbers and tell everyone how YOU would like to have to make do under THOSE kinds of financial circumstances!!!!!!!!

I don't advocate the lazy and apathetic people who don't want to do better, but I LOATHE these arrogant people who point fingers and make judgments without considering the reality for some.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3376136

People making minimum wage are likely tax exempt so wouldn't be losing 25% in taxes. Only 7.65% for medicare + OASDI.

I see your point though.

If you are that strapped for cash you don't buy a new car with a $200/month payment. That's just plain stupid. And for $200/month you can get a brand new car.

You buy a $500-1000 piece of shit or ride a bike or bus. Losing the car cuts out (from your numbers) $200 payment, $100 insurance, $100 gas = $400 per month. $4800/year. You also find cheaper entertainment like a radio (computers suck a lot of energy - the one I'm using right now averages about 160 watts while it is on. So every 6.25 hours it is on - it uuses a kilowatt hour.

Use the local library. Go to the park.

You can be entertained without hollywood shoving movies down your throat.

The safe place to live is the only one that is really hard to make suggestions. You don't want to live somewhere unsafe =(

This is why I just love these get a job people. And these you should pay cash for a house and car people.

Let say a kid gets out of college with a degree and finds a job or jobs. Right now 40,000 a year would be huge for most to find and probably very unlikely for a graduate, but we will use this number.

So after taxes, ss, state tax if you have one, medical, dental, life, medicare etc

Groceries
400 a month.

This is not eating out at all or getting anything from quicky mart. This is very modest considering prices now.

So we are at 1750. From 2600 using the high number this leaves us about 850, but wait. We went to college.

So since we didn't come from rich parents we have to pay for that. Let's say we go to a small cheap school and work part time to pay the room and board.

2000 a semester. Very low price compared to 90%

4 years of school. By the way it is almost impossible to get a 4 year degree anymore, especially while working.

So 4000 a year x 4 years is 16000.

16000 is about a 400 payment a month on student loans.

Now we are up to 2150 - 2600 leaves us about 450 extra.

We are not including any movies, out to eat, up keep on car, pops-candy, lawn care for rent house, medical bills for co-pay, etc.

Hell we will round it up to a big $500 a month extra. Now let’s start saving so we can pay cash and not borrow.

First we need a house and car.

Modest house 150,000. NO LAND besides lot and this probably doesn't exist in price in most places.

So $500 a month savings = $6000 a year.

So it will only take 25 years to save cash for a house at this price.
But wait--in 25 years that house will cost twice that because of inflation.
So 50 years.

Ok let’s get a car.
3 years = 18000 which will buy a piece of shit. These cars normally last 5 years maybe a little more, and they are worth shit nothing when you try to sell them back.

So we get a trade in for $6000 after seven years with the first car we bought. We have to buy a car every 7 years at 18,000.

We will need around 4 cars for the next 28 years, first one being bought for full price. 18000 + 12000 + 12000 + 12000

Hell this is only $54,000. That is another 9 years of saving on top of the 50 for the house. Plus we only figured the cars for 28 years not counting inflation.

So with the math if we started when we are 22 we might have enough cash for a house and keep our cars paid for in cash by the time we are 80 or more.

We won't be able to retire or afford anything else, but by God WE WON’T BE BUMS.

So all you people saying that you pay cash for all your shit and are not in debt are either full of complete shit or came into money somewhere. I suspect most of you got your cash from your momma and you are the true bums. Some of you might have worked your way up the ladder, but at what cost. Some might have built a successful business and are very lucky because if you tried that shit now you would be screwed.

Point being in this long ass post.

Quit blaming these kids. Go get a job is not going to fix shit and you know it. Do the math. Slavery is the end game and they got it.

Hey math is cool! I wanna try!

7.50 an hour, 40 hours a week = 300

lets tax that and bring it down to 200

200 a week for a month is 800 dollars

you get a studio apartment in a cheap part of town for 500 all utilities included. You have provided yourself with shelter and have 300 a month left over

we'll put gas at 100. No car payment cause you're not an idiot and dont buy 18,000 dollar vehicles when you can find a decent one for under 1000 and you've already payed that off. so you're down to 200

that's 50 a week for food and whatever else you want

25 should provide you with food (you can do it for half that though), you get water from the tap, all your needs are now met and you got 25 a week left over for whatever (probably liability insurance for your car). Cool!

you want more money? Maybe youre close enough to your job to walk or bike. congrats! you've just saved 100 a month on what you would be spending on gas. Find some roommates to go in on a 3 bedroom apartment. You can get one of those for like 700. Thats 233 a person. You saved yourself 267 dollars on rent. The total saved = 367 dollars a month! woo-hoo!

you don't have student loans to pay off cause you decided in highschool that you really didn't need much more than minimum wage to survive and the quality of ones life isn't really dependant on how much money they have. Shit, you could live in a van and go camping every day. why not?

Thank you for pin. I guess this is a karma pin and thanks.

Some of you have made good points.

Some of you are saying that a $18,000 car is a good car and not a P.O.S.

That my standards are high just because of this phrase.

The truth is a $18000 car is in the lower range of prices for new vehicles and cars now days are made with cheap parts that do not last period, so infact they are P.O.S. by design.

A car that will last a little longer is in the price range of 30,000-50,000 and (the last a little longer is ?????)

Yes you can find a used car for a lot cheaper than 18000, but it is a crap shoot on how long it will last. Maybe a month or maybe 10 years. It is harder to find older cars and trucks that really last.

Point is this is based on what someone faces in the economy today.

Here's a quote from that book: "Make your gold work for you."

Do you know what that means? Basically it comes down to: NEVER DO ANY WORK. Either pay other people to make enough money to pay for themselves and to make your profits at the same time, OR loan out money at interest.

So by your FUCKING FALLACIOUS LOGIC:

Everyone should "Make their gold work for them", AKA, NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO DO ANY WORK.

WE CAN'T ALL BE CEO'S ECONOTARD!!!

I hope you fucking lose whatever source of money you have, and all your credentials. Try it out bitch.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!

Your bring home is about 1300-1200 every 2 weeks
This is 2600-2400 a month.

Ok let’s pay some bills.

Monthly

Rent 750-Very modest guess. All know some will lower, higher
Car 200- very low cheap car.
Car insurance 100 for decent
150 electricity-- very low for most
50 for gas if you have it.
100 for vehicle gas.

No cable or internet cause we don't want to live to great.
No cell phones because we can't afford this luxury.

Groceries
400 a month.

There's a harsh reality that might help some of you.

Every generation has blamed the generation before them
for the problems of the world.

You are entitled to nothing.

Nothing in life is free. Everything you get, you'll either work for, inherit, or be given, out of love, not entitlement.

Work is hard. Life is hard, but it can be good. Accept it, apply yourselves, and try to help someone else along the way.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!

Shit, you could live in a van and go camping every day. why not?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1733180

So by your math and mine you are screwed. You always going to rent never having anything.

You didn't figure in a bump. You get sick or so on.

Your method is survival and you lose your job or something happens and bam! You are fucked.

Then what happens when you get old?? You going to work til your 100, or even be able to. You think your job will last that long, lol.

Oh, I know. You must think that SS will help you out in 30 years.

Yep that's gonna be there.

Your bring home is about 1300-1200 every 2 weeks
This is 2600-2400 a month.

Ok let’s pay some bills.

Monthly

Rent 750-Very modest guess. All know some will lower, higher
Car 200- very low cheap car.
Car insurance 100 for decent
150 electricity-- very low for most
50 for gas if you have it.
100 for vehicle gas.

No cable or internet cause we don't want to live to great.
No cell phones because we can't afford this luxury.

Groceries
400 a month.
