Each state is vastly different in this area. Typically, states with higher costs of living offer higher incomes/tax breaks to offset this. As far as your generalized idea about getting a job and paying cash, I have a wife and two children in TN, and we are single income at $10/hr. We have cellphones, internet, and the rest of the bills you listed.

You are right, it is extremely difficult these days, however I don't take a dime of welfare to make things happen when it comes to supplying a roof and food. It's called hard work in hard times. Americans, historically, have gotten shit done via this method. Nowadays people want the givernment to hand some shit out to make things easier. It all started will bloated and ever-growing welfare. That's where it will end. Folks need to feel what running on survival instinct is like. This has been forgotten.
