Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
Great post OP.

In some areas, you do need a car to work - for example in areas where there is no public transportation, and riding a bicycle down high traffic streets is living dangerously. You can't walk to work in rain or 100 degree weather and look or smell presentable when you arrive. So, sometimes, a car is a necessity.

The OP's post also demonstrates why you can't live on minimum wage without gov assistance.

Also, we should factor in luck. Yes, it is important. You are lucky if you do not get divorced or have medical issues. These are the two leading factors that result in bankruptcy.

I am always just one paycheck away from homelessness. .. just like most of the people you sell cars to...and the car you repo man sold me died on the side of the highway... you will be coming after me for. Your 3 vacations a year life.. but if I do lose my job repo man you will have to put up with me stinking up the park across from your car lot.. that will cut into your profits repo man, so maybe you better not let the bankers take it all.. just a thought.

Sell my soul??

I have no college education and no loans and make 75k a year and love waking up in the morning to go to work..

Life is good..

Would you rather my be a worthless sperm living off my parents or living of the taxpayers.?

Not everyone has the right personality to seperate people from their money for overpriced vehicles.

What will you do when your customer base dries up?
No customers means no commissions for you.

When times get tough the first things to go are the luxury items.

Fancy new cars, maid service, lawn service, etc, etc,.

So, if you figure you won't be impacted by the recession and you are safe from crashing, think again.

Even in a place where the economy is stable, the business I work in is experiencing a slowdown, effecting everyone.

I have been working steady since I was 14, survived the crash of the late seventies, sold my first house when interest rates rose to 19% then and didn't buy another until years later.

Anyone worth their salt can see what the causes of this collapse are, and it sure as hell isn't the peon workers that did it.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
Two things really help: a partner/teammate in life, and not having kids. The way our household works is, the woman brings home the money now. I used to work for 'The Man' too, but we decided that we could do better if I worked for US instead, while she continued to work for 'The Man'. This was actually more her idea than mine, but then she's always been the wiser of the two of us.

How does this benefit us? Well, instead of spending all of my time and energy making money, much of which is whisked away in taxes, I grow our food. We spend very little on food now. And instead of paying people to do this or do that, *I* do it, because now I have the energy and time to do so. Just the things I have built for us this year would probably have cost $20k if we'd had to pay someone ELSE to do it, which would have been necessary if I was working full or even part time. So we got $20k in improvements to our lives, plus our food for the year (by and large), for the cost of materials alone (around $5k). That's probably around $35k that I earned for us, without ever cashing a paycheck. If I'd been working full time, I'd have needed to make close to $50k pre-tax this year to have equaled that amount of benefit - not likely in this environment. And now we get to spend more time together too.

It takes two to do this though, one to bring home the bacon, and one to magnify/amplify those benefits with hard work and time. I'll be building three nice oak shelving units for us today. If I was still working for 'The Man', I wouldn't have the time or energy to do it, and we'd have to buy them from a store and settle for what we could find, and they'd cost a bundle, and probably wouldn't be exactly what we wanted. Or we'd have to pay someone a fortune to do the work. Instead, I'll get it done for about $500, they'll last longer than we do, they'll look great, and they will be EXACTLY what we want, to the millimeter. When the brake pads need to be changed, or when we need a new privacy fence, or a new foundation for the garage, more raised beds for food production, blah blah blah - I'm good at that stuff and enjoy working with my hands, *especially* when it's for us.

The benefits of having no kids are obvious. Kids are very expensive, and I grew up dirt poor and saw what it's like first hand when parents shirk their parental responsibilities. And we looked around and didn't notice any dearth of human beings on this planet (quite the contrary), so there was no need for us to create more - others can and will do that. That's a sacrifice, because we do both like children, but that sacrifice does have its rewards - more time for us to be together, a higher standard of living.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
I find it interesting that the American government spends lots and lots of money on wars opposed to pre-NATO Libya where money was given to couples to buy a house and start a normal living. Or did I hear wrong about this? Could be.

I do not like this get a job attitude. I am a student and have been working every year when possible (6 years; even before I was a student). Others went to the sea and here and there, they had fun; where did I go? Well, I was working. What do I have right now? A little money left because everything is so expensive :)

Btw, because I worked the whole summer and earned some cash I will most probably not be entitled to a scholarship. Those who did not work have a bigger chance to get it. That doesn't really make me wanna work nor motivate me to seek work. Money to those who work, darn it!

We are humans! If there is so much money for wars and other bullshit then I see no reason why there would be none for the people. You say to others to get a job, I say to you: get a fuckin brain. We all deserve basic necessities and a chance for a good! job. Not for this slave grind, when they tell you, that if you don't agree with them (when they present retarded ideas) that you can just go, because there is a lot of unemployed people waiting for work.

$18 grand for a P.O.S.? Are you kidding me?

I got a car that was like new for $1,100. 47,000 miles later at almost 170,000, its still like new in & out. I average 33-35 mpg.

Between my hubby & I, we make just under $35k per year. One child still living at home. I also go to school, part time. Full ride with pell grants. We are making ends meet, not much left over for fun stuff but we manage.

He has a B.A. from UNI. He graduated in 1982. The economy in our area fell horribly when a major employer laid off 90% of its workforce. This area haven't recovered yet. He has been using his degree at his job for the past 2 years for the 2nd time in his life. (he's 53)

In this economy, there is no guarantee of a job once your graduate from high school. Forget the stupid loans, you can't afford them. If you can't afford to go to school on grants & scholarships, then work & save up money for school, even if its one class per semester.

Most high schoolers don't know what they want to do with their lives when they graduate anyway. They are young & still need guidance in their lives.

One doctor that I interviewed for health with college students, he commended they do missionary work for a year or 2 after graduating.

You clearly have zero clue how banks function, then and now. Also you're "math" in your original post is composed of un-educated guessing around tax rates and costs of living. Each state is vastly different in this area. Typically, states with higher costs of living offer higher incomes/tax breaks to offset this. As far as your generalized idea about getting a job and paying cash, I have a wife and two children in TN, and we are single income at $10/hr. We have cellphones, internet, and the rest of the bills you listed.

You are right, it is extremely difficult these days, however I don't take a dime of welfare to make things happen when it comes to supplying a roof and food. It's called hard work in hard times. Americans, historically, have gotten shit done via this method. Nowadays people want the givernment to hand some shit out to make things easier. It all started will bloated and ever-growing welfare. That's where it will end. Folks need to feel what running on survival instinct is like. This has been forgotten.

It's not easy, but it's doable. I applaud your attempt at bitching, but it's a tad misplaced.
 Quoting: psyoptics

I do A/V for most of the big banks in NYC, sorry my friend you do not know how theY work or think!

why are we in hardtimes now?
why are the bankers still making their bonueses?
why when banks steal or comit fraud they go free?
it would only take a illness in a family and just making it in HARDTIMES would be turned in to not making it.
so when 10's of thousands of people step up to the bankers to change the way the can cheat you. PLAESE DO NOT HATE THEM. WHY BACK THE BANKERS AND NOT THE PROTESTERS?????
THE BANKERS ARE TAKING YOUR MONEY!
THE PROTESTERS JUST WANT TO BE FREE!!!!!!

I'm not backing either party. Sorry, there is a huge difference between my local bank or credit union here, and the fed. reserve. The difference is proper loan guarantee built on trust and credit, and usury.

I don't back the protesters because they are NOT 99% of people. They are a small group. The actual majority in this country are too busy WORKING to keep up with this bullshit. THAT is the true evil game being played. Make it hard enough to live and keep the middle class quiet. However, as I said before it's simply difficult, not impossible to make it happen.

The entire thing is a socialist fraud, and those of us that work 40+ hours a week, or say 60+ hours a week don't have the time or the patience with this level of bullshit. We are the ones that will really break everything when the shit truly hits the fan, not the fake doom pouring out in droves from the newagers, hippies, and neutopian ankle biters on this site and others. There are too many distractions and we're not afraid.

You keep pushing and the real majority will flip the whole fucking thing on it's head and we'll do it quickly. In the mean time, I have a family to worry about and take care of. I defend their well-being every day and no one helps me. I don't need help. That's the difference between the ones on the street trying to get obama re-elected and myself. Where my kids will grow up to bust ass and get shit done and not believe everything they're told in school, on tv, in the news, by their peers OR their government. Critical thinking on tap at my house.

Fuck'em both because they all suck. So yea, huge centralized banks could stand to be completely dismantled, and the protesters need to go get a fucking job and contribute and help out or sit down and shut the fuck up. The time WILL come, just not now.

This thread is a great example of whining crybabies who think they deserve a new car fresh out of school and that society some how owes them a job. They are 'too proud / full of themselves' to work somewhere beneath their self-ascribed station in life. Screw that. GO work at Lowe's until your dream job appears. Someone is ALWAYS hiring for something. $9 an hour job looks better on your resume than a big blank space.

Wanna know what the problem is?

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
This is why I just love these get a job people. And these you should pay cash for a house and car people.

Let say a kid gets out of college with a degree and finds a job or jobs. Right now 40,000 a year would be huge for most to find and probably very unlikely for a graduate, but we will use this number.

So after taxes, ss, state tax if you have one, medical, dental, life, medicare etc

Your bring home is about 1300-1200 every 2 weeks
This is 2600-2400 a month.

Ok let’s pay some bills.

Monthly

Rent 750-Very modest guess. All know some will lower, higher
Car 200- very low cheap car.
Car insurance 100 for decent
150 electricity-- very low for most
50 for gas if you have it.
100 for vehicle gas.

No cable or internet cause we don't want to live to great.
No cell phones because we can't afford this luxury.

Groceries
400 a month.

This is not eating out at all or getting anything from quicky mart. This is very modest considering prices now.

So we are at 1750. From 2600 using the high number this leaves us about 850, but wait. We went to college.

So since we didn't come from rich parents we have to pay for that. Let's say we go to a small cheap school and work part time to pay the room and board.

2000 a semester. Very low price compared to 90%

4 years of school. By the way it is almost impossible to get a 4 year degree anymore, especially while working.

So 4000 a year x 4 years is 16000.

16000 is about a 400 payment a month on student loans.

Now we are up to 2150 - 2600 leaves us about 450 extra.

We are not including any movies, out to eat, up keep on car, pops-candy, lawn care for rent house, medical bills for co-pay, etc.

Hell we will round it up to a big $500 a month extra. Now let’s start saving so we can pay cash and not borrow.

First we need a house and car.

Modest house 150,000. NO LAND besides lot and this probably doesn't exist in price in most places.

So $500 a month savings = $6000 a year.

So it will only take 25 years to save cash for a house at this price.
But wait--in 25 years that house will cost twice that because of inflation.
So 50 years.

Ok let’s get a car.
3 years = 18000 which will buy a piece of shit. These cars normally last 5 years maybe a little more, and they are worth shit nothing when you try to sell them back.

So we get a trade in for $6000 after seven years with the first car we bought. We have to buy a car every 7 years at 18,000.

We will need around 4 cars for the next 28 years, first one being bought for full price. 18000 + 12000 + 12000 + 12000

Hell this is only $54,000. That is another 9 years of saving on top of the 50 for the house. Plus we only figured the cars for 28 years not counting inflation.

So with the math if we started when we are 22 we might have enough cash for a house and keep our cars paid for in cash by the time we are 80 or more.

We won't be able to retire or afford anything else, but by God WE WON’T BE BUMS.

So all you people saying that you pay cash for all your shit and are not in debt are either full of complete shit or came into money somewhere. I suspect most of you got your cash from your momma and you are the true bums. Some of you might have worked your way up the ladder, but at what cost. Some might have built a successful business and are very lucky because if you tried that shit now you would be screwed.

Point being in this long ass post.

Quit blaming these kids. Go get a job is not going to fix shit and you know it. Do the math. Slavery is the end game and they got it.

Says the cat from Romania? Really? There are roughly 6 million private sector companies in this country. All of them are always attempting to grow because that's what businesses do, otherwise the presidents and ceos would be fucked. It really is that simple. Getting a job in this country is still quite easy. I have a bachelors degree, but am I using it currently? No. Does that make me feel bad? No. I work. I work hard. I've spent a little time unemployed, just a little, before I turned over a rock and said "well fuck my ass theirs a job to have" so I got it.

Everyone blames the economy. The streets are still filled with people going to work and making money, then they come to me and spend the money. In fuckin droves. Yea the Dow may look pretty shit-tastic from time to time, but the actual economy is decent right now. Sure a crash is coming, it's built to fail just like your cell phone and PC, but I'm smart and prepared for it. My family will eat while I protect them plain and simple. So fuck off with this let's blame everyone else without looking in a mirror bullshit. It's as old as me and I'm sick of it.

I think the type and quality of job is a factor. If you strive to flip burgers then you can expect to make burger flipping wages. Learn a skill or trade, much better than the mundane worker robot jobs. I paint cars for a living and am always looking for good a helper. My helpers become good painters within a couple of years, and get good jobs painting. I roughly turn 100 hrs a week in commission, averaging a $45.00 an hour. Just need people who are willing to LEARN and STICK WITH IT. Anyone can be lazy. Oh yea, my boss just gave me a $3.00 raise for doing excellent work.

i know what the arrogant, bitter people will say.

get another job. work your ass into the ground.

one shouldn't have to be juggling multiple jobs as a college graduate. something is wrong in the system, when this happens.

it's no wonder these arrogant people are so bitter. the lifestyle they advocate is no life, at all. there is no balance. all for the sake of more material possessions, and false security.

Some of you ppl whine way too much. You want something, get a job and save for it. Nobody forced you to take out a loan you can't afford. The banks are in business to loan, not just for education and housing, but for business. If the banks go down, business fails and then there will be NO jobs. Now let's think about this for a second. If there are no banks where do you think ppl will go to get money? The government. Who will the government loan to? Does Solyndra ring a bell? The government will pick and chose the winners as long as the money is funneled back to them to keep their socialist agenda going forever.

It is not the banks that is causing the financial problems we are experiencing today you idiots, it is the government and your parents for raising such tools. Nobody owes you didly squat, you ppl siding with the protesters are not 99% of the population. You are nothing but a bunch of spoiled brats no matter what age you are. You think just because you can't get to the top then nobody should be there, well screw you. I'm not giving up anything else for you eaters. Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
The point in 'get a job' is to motivate people to 'make a job'.

It is up to individuals to create jobs in America. If people choose not to risk and be an employee all their life, well fine. Live in an apartment and ride the bus then.

America is about excellence. People need to create businesses and employ others. Few can start life this way, but anyone can finish this way.

Then you pay cash for a car and a house.

Nobody has a right to have a car or a house. They have a right to work for it.
 Quoting: Apocalypse Troll

How does one create jobs right now? You say start a business. How without borrowing?

No bank will loan on business unless it is 20% or more interest and 20% down.

The government is not helping through the sba.

You say people need to create business and by this they create jobs. I agree except for there is no way to create business, so there are no jobs.

The people that have the money to invest, to start business are not doing it.

Bravo!!!!
It only took me 20 years to get where I am, small business owner living free and clear. It was a lot of hard fucking work and long hours, and to the OP don't tell me it's harder now than in 1982 when I started at the very bottom in the middle of a very deep recession.

Back when I got married and bought the acreage there were times I had to figure out if I could afford a 6 pack for Friday night. I was flat fucking broke living paycheck to paycheck, but instead of bitching about being fucked by the man I was determined to make something of myself and put into place a long term plan. I went to tech school full time during the day and worked full time on the night shift. I worked my way up the ladder at the factory where I worked and started to save some money instead of buying new cars and electronic gadgets. It was pretty tough at times watching the poor broke people I worked with getting new cars and toys while I struggled to put some cash away, but I had a goal.

I did not come from a family of money, and was never given anything. If I can do it, anyone that is not a true Moran can do it also, but you have to shut the fuck up about getting screwed by the man, and put into place a long term goal. Like I said, it took me 20 hard years to get here, and I don't appreciate some snot nosed whiney kid or poor me old bastard crying that I owe them anything and that I don't deserve what I have.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
then there are folks like me. I have a couple bucks in the bank but won't spend it. I love football and could run out right now and plunk down cash for the most expensive HD tv out there. Then call Time Warner for the hook up. But I'm also looking down the road at the mess that is coming and refuse to spend any money. My entertainment is on the tax payer dime to a certain extent. Range and fishing license is $43 for a year. The lake is only 4 miles away. I clean, cook and eat on their picnic tables. Free food, essentially. You just have to learn how to catch them. Free Internet, heat, electricity and light next door all paid by the tax payer.

Here's an example. A month ago they announced that they're going to start shutting down the coal fired power plants or fine them heavily. Look for your electric bills to double in the near future. Start making the changes, now.

As more and more people spend less money, the whole thing continues to go downhill towards collapse. I'd think long and hard before I took out a student loan.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
I work with a divorced woman who is about 35-40. She one child and a room-mate. Their entertainment consists of Netflix at $9 a month.

About a year ago she finished her Bachelor's degree and is working towards her Masters. She does it on about $44K a year.

As to some of your other points, many folks do get a head start these days. For instance their parents were prudent enough to save for their children's education by starting early. Good for them.

Talk to somebody who is working toward being an airline pilot. They live about 4 to an apartment of about 1000 square feet. Right there, your rent, gas, electric are cut by 75%. It's the same with many students living off-campus. There are ways to do it...it's not easy but nobody said it would be.

That being said, the cost of college is out of control. $2500 for an online class is just preposterous, and that's about what it cost at University of Phoenix. Giving illegals in-State tuition and denying it to legal citizens is just plain wrong. If we sealed up the borders and stopped the bleeding caused by illegal immigration, we could start subsidizing part of our education.
I only believe half of what I read and even half of that is bullshit.

Here's a bit of real life. One out of college. making 45000yr. Still living at home, not dumb enough to piss her money away on someone else's mortgage payment. payed off two of her student loans already with 2 more to go. Then she plans on helping with the parents plus loans. She drives a used car, paid in full. No payments on that. Not dumb enough to get sucked into the gotta have a shiny new car.
Son graduates this year and already has begun networking for employment next May.

I don't blame the kids. Maybe its the parents who failed to live within their means(and teach their children the same) and set a bad example.

Look at society and the parent of today. We've become so materialistic the we've lost the basics.
