About a year ago she finished her Bachelor's degree and is working towards her Masters. She does it on about $44K a year.

As to some of your other points, many folks do get a head start these days. For instance their parents were prudent enough to save for their children's education by starting early. Good for them.

Talk to somebody who is working toward being an airline pilot. They live about 4 to an apartment of about 1000 square feet. Right there, your rent, gas, electric are cut by 75%. It's the same with many students living off-campus. There are ways to do it...it's not easy but nobody said it would be.

That being said, the cost of college is out of control. $2500 for an online class is just preposterous, and that's about what it cost at University of Phoenix. Giving illegals in-State tuition and denying it to legal citizens is just plain wrong. If we sealed up the borders and stopped the bleeding caused by illegal immigration, we could start subsidizing part of our education.
