You've been brainwashed!!!

Everyone should have a food, clothes and a home. No one should have to work for the basics to live.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Where does "the basics" come from? The government only has money because we work and give it to them in the form of taxes. If we give them all of our money and they in turn give us "the basics", why wouldn't we just buy our own "basics" with our own money? Are you too stupid to buy your own "basics"? Do you instead want to give the nanny your money so they can buy your "basics"?

I grew up DIRT poor, worked my ass off in school for good grades, was on my own at age 16 and graduated high school (knew I could not afford college) but got a job and continued to work my ass off. Now, I own a business and I do quite well because I was GIVEN the only thing I needed and it's called OPPORTUNITY. That's ALL you have a right to you spoiled stupid people.

If you don't have the will to get up and work your hardest everyday then blame your parents for not raising you right, it's not the responsibility of the government (my tax dollars) to pay for your "basics"

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
My parents both dropped out of school when they were 17 and they both immediately got jobs with the government (with only a Grade 11 education). After working about 40 years, they both retired at the top of their respective fields and now draw around $300 thousand in iron-clad government pensions (plus perks). They are not particularly bright or ambitious (sheeple mentality); this kind of career track was the norm for government workers who hung in there, year after year.

I mention this brief history because that was then and this is now. If you dropped out of high school today, there would be no government job with all the perks waiting for you. In particular, the employment field has been altered drastically over the past 20 years, and not for the better. In some cases, wages have risen only a few dollars, remained stagnant, or even declined. After graduating university in the late 1980s, I started doing temp work at $12 to $16 per hour. The wages for that same job, more than 20 years later, are today around $10. In the late 1980s, a bachelor apartment was $250 to $300 a month. That same apartment is now around $1,200. We won't go into how food and every other cost has likewise exponentially risen.

Without credit or loans, people starting out today cannot survive unless they pool their resources, live four or five to a bachelor apartment, and work 80 hours a week. The "good" jobs are few and far between. Dropping out of high school and nabbing a cushy government job for life is simply no longer possible.

I feel sorry for the kids. I'm not surprised that most of them drink or smoke themselves into a stupor every night. We have created an unsustainable world, right across the board. There was a piece in my local news paper this morning about how retired professors at a local university earn their full salary as a pension until they die. The university is having problems paying the pensions (there's a shortfall of $270 million this year), which will then be paid by taxpayers. This is only one example.

My parents' generation have lived unrealistic, unsustainable lives and set unrealistic, unsustainable goals. In doing so, they've set themselves up nicely in a system that is ponzi by nature, but the scheme is now unraveling. This is a cold hard fact. Don't blame the kids. That they're only 'occupying', is a blessing. If I were 30 years younger, I'd be getting out the pitchfork.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
OK so OP was a little off with the 18,000 won't get you a good car estimate. HOWEVER he/she estimated quite low on most of the other items, and estimated high on the starting salary.

I would also like to point out that my thoroughly competent 10,000 used Honda Accord hit me with a 4,000 transmission bill out of the blue, despite low mileage and an immaculate, documented service record. So, if you do buy a 10,000 car, you need to have that kind of money lying around "just in case."

Oh and do you know what a root canal costs? Or building and maintaining a professional wardrobe? Or dry cleaning? And of course this hypothetical college grad isn't really going to find a job paying 40,000 unless he/she selected a major that is really in demand. And you can't always predict which ones those will be, even five years out. I know someone who started professional architecture training before the housing bust, has her degree now, and guess what? Laid off from her first professional job and now living with her parents, unable to find work at any pay scale.

Anyway, kudos to OP for telling it like it is. No wonder we are all in debt.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
Don't get a job, get 2 and have your spouse get 1 on the side. I have a day job with a 2 hour commute each way. When I get home, I start my other job on the side. I support myself, my wife and e children. My wife is a stay at home mother as we did the math, her working a regular full time job would not cover the day care and someone else is raising our kids. So when the kids go to school, she cleans houses to pay for the gas for my 4 hours of driving each day. She enjoys aerobics so she got her certification to teach. Now she gets paid to stay in shape and bring in additional money.

We go camping for a vacation and the kids love it! alot cheaper than staying in a hotel and the kids actually learn something

There are ways to cut back and save. I have about 1000.00 in brakes, rotors and front end alignment that needed to be done to my minivan with 135k miles on it. I did not have to charge it on visa because we are working our ass off and have the money to do it. I also am not going to run out and buy a new car because this one looks great and it is a honda...which means I can drive it for another 135k miles if I want to.

Think out of the box and work as a team and you can do this.

The next phase is to get even better jobs to work smart...not hard.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2127318

1k in brakes, rotors and alignment. wow someone doesn't think outside the box very well. brake pads are 50, rotors are 30-80. and your alignment is fucked cause your ass needs tires. Its an hours worth of work and any simple retard that wastes his time working 2 jobs can do it. Stop wasting your wifes time working for you to drive to work. basically what you say is you work so hard so you can struggle all day long. Not to mention the lack of fathering you are accomplishing during your what 20 hour a day work day. Fuck off Slave. No one wants to hear about your struggle in suburbia.

The real problem again is the size of the population. Especially the over 50 demographic. Those lucky ants who have worked and stored up all these years, good for you, but be aware there are far more grasshoppers now than ants and even a wealthy man has to sleep sometimes. There is a change in the wind, and I'm not sure how any of this is now going to go down...but asking a young man to live as an indentured slave, to forego basic pleasures and freedoms previous generations enjoyed, marriage, kids, and those golden fields of Elysium in retirement...ain't going to work. The pyramid scheme has always been a scam, but this new upside down version...was never built to last in my opinion. Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
This is why I just love these get a job people. And these you should pay cash for a house and car people.

Let say a kid gets out of college with a degree and finds a job or jobs. Right now 40,000 a year would be huge for most to find and probably very unlikely for a graduate, but we will use this number.

So after taxes, ss, state tax if you have one, medical, dental, life, medicare etc

Your bring home is about 1300-1200 every 2 weeks
This is 2600-2400 a month.

Ok let’s pay some bills.

Monthly

Rent 750-Very modest guess. All know some will lower, higher
Car 200- very low cheap car.
Car insurance 100 for decent
150 electricity-- very low for most
50 for gas if you have it.
100 for vehicle gas.

No cable or internet cause we don't want to live to great.
No cell phones because we can't afford this luxury.

Groceries
400 a month.

This is not eating out at all or getting anything from quicky mart. This is very modest considering prices now.

So we are at 1750. From 2600 using the high number this leaves us about 850, but wait. We went to college.

So since we didn't come from rich parents we have to pay for that. Let's say we go to a small cheap school and work part time to pay the room and board.

2000 a semester. Very low price compared to 90%

4 years of school. By the way it is almost impossible to get a 4 year degree anymore, especially while working.

So 4000 a year x 4 years is 16000.

16000 is about a 400 payment a month on student loans.

Now we are up to 2150 - 2600 leaves us about 450 extra.

We are not including any movies, out to eat, up keep on car, pops-candy, lawn care for rent house, medical bills for co-pay, etc.

Hell we will round it up to a big $500 a month extra. Now let’s start saving so we can pay cash and not borrow.

First we need a house and car.

Modest house 150,000. NO LAND besides lot and this probably doesn't exist in price in most places.

So $500 a month savings = $6000 a year.

So it will only take 25 years to save cash for a house at this price.
But wait--in 25 years that house will cost twice that because of inflation.
So 50 years.

Ok let’s get a car.
3 years = 18000 which will buy a piece of shit. These cars normally last 5 years maybe a little more, and they are worth shit nothing when you try to sell them back.

So we get a trade in for $6000 after seven years with the first car we bought. We have to buy a car every 7 years at 18,000.

We will need around 4 cars for the next 28 years, first one being bought for full price. 18000 + 12000 + 12000 + 12000

Hell this is only $54,000. That is another 9 years of saving on top of the 50 for the house. Plus we only figured the cars for 28 years not counting inflation.

So with the math if we started when we are 22 we might have enough cash for a house and keep our cars paid for in cash by the time we are 80 or more.

We won't be able to retire or afford anything else, but by God WE WON’T BE BUMS.

So all you people saying that you pay cash for all your shit and are not in debt are either full of complete shit or came into money somewhere. I suspect most of you got your cash from your momma and you are the true bums. Some of you might have worked your way up the ladder, but at what cost. Some might have built a successful business and are very lucky because if you tried that shit now you would be screwed.

Point being in this long ass post.

Quit blaming these kids. Go get a job is not going to fix shit and you know it. Do the math. Slavery is the end game and they got it.

Whiners and cry babies... a bunch of Cant Do losers.

In the 90's my family scrimped and saved on a $7.35 per hour job to support a wife and 2 kids.

The only thing that made it possible was the ability to work as many overtime hours as you wanted.... and
80 plus hour weeks were the norm to make ends meet.

Saved up enough to start my own business by 2003.

Several more years of scrimping to grow the company, and 80 hour weeks would have seemed like a vacation.

So now I enjoy the friuts of my labor a little bit... and little spoiled fuckwits say I was just lucky?...
I worked the equilivant of a 40 year career in less than 20 years. That's how fuckin lucky I got.

Life is what you make it... better not be a lazy whiner expecting that just because you went to college someone owes you a free ride.

You act like we were handed a great life on a silver platter. No, we WORKED - a concept which seems to be lost on kids today.

If you want to threaten that you'll come and take my wealth from me while I sleep then I encourage you to try. By all means, try.

First I'm in between. Not young, and not old. Right at 40. I've worked hard and came from a family who has a great work ethic having lost much in the Great Depression. I've made it, like my father before me, but I seriously doubt my kids will have the quality of life I or my father had without a generational wealth transfer happening.

You against one punk, granted. You against wandering hordes of vegetable thieves...odds aren't so clear cut. Everyone should be worried when society starts to crumble due to class warfare. I wasn't threatening, I was pointing out what everyday seems to be happening more and more. Trust me, I'm one of the ones against the wall if this keeps going down the toilet bowl. Problems started when we fled to the ivory towers and gated communities. If just a fraction of time spent of golf courses every week went into solving local and community issues...maybe life would be different for a lot of people right now. My two cents.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
the Toyota Yaris is a damn fine vehicle (everyone has them here)

they cost $20k here but only $13k in the US--brand new

plus, cheap as chips on gas

OP said $18k will get you a piece of shit?

you need to think outside the box a bit

All that wealth you have, you have from either luck or inheritance. Period. I don't care what you think you or anyone you know may have done to feel like you can push other people away and make them work for you, which is all money really is. If you didn't put a house together with your own hands, if you didn't water the tree that you fashioned the boards from, if you didn't plant the seed that grew into that tree, then who are you to say you deserve anything? Let me tell you a story:

One day, a test came, and a kid with a very involved family came with 3 pushup pencils, and another kid was an orphan, and had nothing to write with. This pencil-less kid told the teacher, but the teacher was harsh and said he'd fail with nothing to grade. He asked the person with the 3 pushup pencils if he could have one, and the person told him no.

The kid failed his test, and failed his class, and failed his grade. This kid would end up with a poor reputation, poor outlook, and poor grades. I can almost smell the small kids now, in my mind, that were like this in my past. I remember these little kids who looked forward to their terrible school lunches. Maybe you were a preppy pos, and have no fucking clue what this is like.

Now this kid grew up, and had his own children. And he made a decent wage. When his child goes to school, will he be an involved parent. Hopefully.

But, here's the important part:

What would he tell his child to do if another child needs a pencil?

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!

These whiny maggots feel like they deserve something..

It's always that life's not fair and the man is keeping everyone down. This may actually be true, but I know several people personally including myself who MAKE their own lives. We don't live by the system, we work around it to get what we want. This country still operates on this. The bottom feeders always suggest that the wealthy somehow cheat. Such mindless bullshit from the supposedly educated.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
Years ago i was where the 20somethings are today. I am 43 now and life has been no walk in the park. I worked til I ruined my back, had 2 surgerys and live in constant pain.

BUT, things will work out for all of you young people if you take incremental steps and set attainable goals. Very, very few people get out of school and get a job that they want. I takes time to attain things but if you are persistant you will reach your goals

Just the opposite - you don't see us "old bastards" in the street do you? We have everything we need sonny.

Some of you may, but the overall numbers are grim for those over 60.

Well I'm 45 so we're not so far apart. As for safety, I've taken that into consideration and I am safer than probably 95% of most Americans just because of where I live and the security measures that are in place. The only wandering hords around here would be deer. I knew this was coming when the last election happened. I stopped spending and started saving more than ever to prepare for times like these. I grow and can most of the food we eat. I buy from local dairies and ranchers to support my community.

We have an administration dead set on killing jobs. I know they say they want jobs but everything they do discourages job growth. They have refused to issue drilling permits even after a court ordered it. That would have put thousands to work and instead we gave money to Brazil to drill. It's scandal after scandal, giving tax dollars to contributors and putting in regulation after regulation to smother businees.

The administration is FULL Of wall street and bankers - look at who the president chose as his staff. I'm simply saying this sentiment is terribly misguided.

I'm from Texas too, just southwest of Ft. Worth. Right now societal breakdown is happening along racial lines between Latino and Black gangs in south and south east Ft. Worth/Arlington. You introduce any kind of economic shock at this point, things will get bad fast. I'm sure you've read about gangs up and down the border hitting ranches. Do you have the manpower to defend yourself from gangs in jeeps with machine guns? Because that is part of this equation, you have to have enough trusted people/ranch hands/your own gang to defend yourself from another gang. This is the rabbit hole we're plunging down and I don't like it one bit, not one bit. Are you ready for Texas with an 1871 flavor all over again?
