We are Already there. Wake up
 Quoting: BigNutChuck

No we're not. But these folks "protesting" are asking for it and they "shall receive".

How is asking for BIGGER GOV a good thing?
 Quoting: TXGal4Truth

They are asking for a fix or something to be done.

We are fucked. I don't agree with some of there ideas, but at least they are trying.

My whole point of the first post was to introduce some logic into some of these people posting this "Get a job" crap and "Don't borrow money" crap.

This website and some members are on a mission to make everyone who doesn't have a job or is in debt look like a bum.

That is complete bullshit.

The people protesting come from all different walks of life and have all different views on how to fix this shit.

But the focus has been on only a few trying to discredit the whole thing.

You say they need to shut up and take it in the ass. Because if they don't we might see martial law or something like that, and like I said at least they are trying and not scared.

Martial law is only scary when you have much to lose and are scared to fight back. Once again the loudest people against this movement have A LOT TO LOSE--MONEY WISE.
 Quoting: BigNutChuck

But see, the thing is that they're asking for something that TPTB want them to ask for.

They've fallen into the trap.

 Quoting: TXGal4Truth

This is why I am against OWS. This very event has repeated itself time and again throughout history. This has been the goal of the left for decades.

The banks should not have been bailed out. The auto industry should not have been bailed out. Economies self correct when left alone. It is the constant meddling by gov't that serves to extend these economic downturns.

It's disturbing to watch this play out like a long game of chess. The left instigate crisis after crisis, year after year, decade after decade - then they implement their self-proclaimed 'fixes' after each one. Then, in the ultimate move to secure check mate, they convince the very people they have victimized for decades to turn to them for the solution. So many people are unable to step back and realize that the layers of solutions are the actual problem.

I suspect that many of the protesters are not aware of who was behind the funding and planning of this event. It is designed to be nothing more than a grand distraction to benefit the current administration.

Bailing out the banks was the wrong approach. Why, though, did the gov't force many banks to accept capital that they did not need or want? Why, though, do none of the protesters seem to realize that the Treasury has made a profit off of TARP - meaning they have been paid back with interest. Gov't needs to stop picking winners and losers.

The point in 'get a job' is to motivate people to 'make a job'.

It is up to individuals to create jobs in America. If people choose not to risk and be an employee all their life, well fine. Live in an apartment and ride the bus then.

America is about excellence. People need to create businesses and employ others. Few can start life this way, but anyone can finish this way.

Then you pay cash for a car and a house.

Nobody has a right to have a car or a house. They have a right to work for it.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
Now, you just have to take a smarter route to what you want to do.

They want everyone in debt. Don't put yourself in that situation. There are other ways
 Quoting: ThirdEyeBrown

Explain how there are other ways.

 Quoting: BigNutChuck

Do your homework on each and every expense in your life and find the best, cheapest option.

In the OP's original post, he refered to an $18,000 car as a "piece of shit".

You can buy an extremely reliable, comfortable 3 to 5 year old car for that amount IF you do your homework, educate yourself and take your time shopping.

Or you could make do with an old, ugly, beat up 10 year old car, and save the $8,000 to $13,000 price difference.

And what do you call an $18,000 car with some cosmetic body damage? You call it a $10,000 car. And thus in exchange for suffering the humiliation of driving an ugly car, you pocket the difference.

Let go of thinking about a car -- or your address, or any product -- as being any kind of a reflection on you as a person, live humbly below your means.

The whole attitude of the OP's post, characterised by the statement that an $18,000 car is necessarily a piece of shit, illustrates the lack of nitty-gritty it takes to choose wisely and flourish free from debt.

Educate yourself on each and every expense in your life!

Conciously choose to "make do" with where you live or what you drive, rather than give a damn about the prestige or humiliation associated with it.

Freedom from debt does come at a "price" -- and that price is called Delayed Gratification. And it is called Humility.

Oh, but sweet, sweet freedom it is.

 Quoting: goodmockingbird

Lol... Barely surviving is the plan then... Leveling things from the ground sure is the easy, the slave way.

Following your logic, one could even eat the car tires in case he's hungry.. House made of cardboard in a dark alley might be an option too ..?

Sacrifices are respectable only when they mean something.

Excuse me Skeptic....but I didn't do any of this to you...I figured out a long time ago I wasn't going to be able to buy a house, it's just not in the cards for me, how is that someone else's fault?

I'm not bitter about not being able to own property....I'm actually glad i don't pay the taxes....and I've got a great land-lord....it's a relationship we built over time when he realized I was not destroying his property like his other tenants.

Good for you. Glad your way works for you. I'd like to make a few points.

I think everyone on GLP would agree the United States has been FUBAR'd pretty well. Economically and politically. Am I safe to assume we are in agreement? Now, how did it get this way? Who let this happen?

It's not just about a house, or a car, or even food. It's about the bullshit tab we've been left with from the dine-and-dash patrons that got their gourmet and left. It's the fact that the opportunities of my parents and grandparents are no longer there to even pursue. It's the fact that my time is worth less than theirs was. Not only has our currency been debased, but time = money. Now we are getting less for our time.

I just want the work I do and the time I take to do it represent the quality it's worth.

No one generation is to blame, no one person is to blame. It's a culmination of a bunch of really bad choices by the multitudes that has finally come to a head, and instead of those people saying, we fucked up, they say "life's not fair, quit whining". That still doesn't change the fact that the current generation has to clean up their mess AND pay for it, in more ways than one.

Fantastic.

It's all in the "legit"...

Take a few steps back.. Breathe.. I'm not bragging about france being about excellence, it is an old country, that acted in the same fascist way as america is acting today.

It takes quite a brainwash to consider the texas flag as something valuable in any way..

And, by the way, the US got involved in the war for multiple reasons, making money out of it by selling the marshall plan to europeans was not the smallest motivation.

And please... don't forget that nazis were partly funded by american banksters (granny bush for instance), and those traitors have never been charged for that.

I live my life very simply.

I don't have a cell phone. The lap top is new and cost more than my first car....I don't feel sorry for people with the latest technology but can't afford to eat....and you can't make me.

I live within my means, and expect everyone else to do the same, including the government.

I have NEVER had a credit card and have always lived pretty good on what you consider a poverty level for nearly 50 years...and I have worked since I was 13.

I pointed out the labor laws because most people give up their rights, allowing their employers to steal from them, in order to have a job. If people would call the labor board this would end, but most won't bite the hand that feeds them or just plain don't know what their rights are.
It creates collective misery...and the only way out is to prosecute the ones breaking the law...but that requires effort.

So, yeah, you are irrelevant. You can just stop right now. You are obviously over 50, you don't get it, you can't get it. You are old and stuck in your ways. The only way for the over 50 crowd, hell, over 35 crowd to get this is if they have already had their eyes open. So, I will just stand in awe and rapture of your martyrdom. I'm sorry that you never had the spirit or stamina to aspire for more than anything greater. You are coming from a different time, a different world even. You said yourself, the laptop you are on cost more than your first car. This doesn't send up a red flag to you? This does't make you think something is intrinsically wrong?

Oh and what, you've lived at $40,000 a year for the past 50 years, or it's equivalent? Listen old timer, trying going up to the store and buying bread for a nickle. Hell, try to buy ANYTHING for a nickle. Quit the poor/jobless = lazy bit. It's tired.

I have a bread machine, 5$ at goodwill, and it costs about 50c worth of ingredients and 10c worth of electricity, plus about 15 minutes of my time to make a loaf of bread. Considering inflation, 60c for a loaf of bread is DAMN cheap.

The costs of almost ALL manufactured goods has dropped by orders of magnitude as a result of our inflationary monetary policies.

Nickles are some of my favorite coins, if you don't think they are valuable I would be happy to have them for my collection.

I don't believe America to be 'FUBARed' at all, in fact I think things are going pretty great.

In my opinion many poeple have an overinflated sense of what their 'work' is really worth.

The fact is that we are adding hundreds of millions of skilled, middle class working people to the world, and trillions of dollars of wealth to the world economy. These people are coming out of real poverty and the truly compassionate thing to do is to allow them to compete with the American workers. Why should we deny these people a shot an an industrialized life style?

People seem to be upset because they ARE being paid what their job and time is really worth, often times much more then it really is.

I think you are missing the point, can I have your nickles if you don't want them?

Of course things are going well for you, you've been in the system for 50+ years. Which is why your point of view is irrelevant. When it comes to people just starting, everything has changed. Starting out now, is not like it was 50 years ago, you would be a fool to argue that point.
And yet you will argue, because you are a fool and have NO CLUE how it is in good old 2011.

Ok, you bleeding heart asshole. I'm all about charity for the rest of the world, but charity also starts at home. I applaud those who have earned their right to live the middle class dream. But I will not have it at my, my children's, or my country's expense. So what, you are saying that we've had long enough prosperity that it's time to just GIVE it over to another country. Your old puckered ass may be done with it, but there are other people who are counting on it to be there for them when they are starting out. Why do we, as a country have to give up anything just so other countries can prosper. If the systems worked, we should all be able to prosper with no need to sacrifice the well being of a countries people for another.

In your opinion, what jobs do you think are overpaid? The STNA wiping asses, cleaning up vomit, and defending against combative senile ancients making $9 an hour is overpaid? Really, how much would YOU do that job for? A minimum wage job of backbreaking lifting for a retail stores backroom... heavy manual labor under deadlines and un-crating 500 boxes a day. Give me an example of someone starting out today who you consider to be overpaid.

As for an "overinflated" sense of work. I gotta know what you feel YOUR time is worth.

I'd give you my nickles, but you see, they add up and I need a whole hell of a lot of them to get anything. Again, you are missing the point I made with nickles you miserable cuss.

Excellence in what ? Genociding indians ? Stealing lands and resources worldwide ? Being a plague for the rest of humanity ? Being the champions of lies ?

Stuck that texas flag of yours where it belongs...

Didn't we save your silly country from the legit nazi's?

It's all in the "legit"...

Take a few steps back.. Breathe.. I'm not bragging about france being about excellence, it is an old country, that acted in the same fascist way as america is acting today.

It takes quite a brainwash to consider the texas flag as something valuable in any way..

And, by the way, the US got involved in the war for multiple reasons, making money out of it by selling the marshall plan to europeans was not the smallest motivation.

And please... don't forget that nazis were partly funded by american banksters (granny bush for instance), and those traitors have never been charged for that.

Im 23. I live in 2011. You people are idiots

You're trying to say that the OPs math somehow reflects upon reality? Are you fucking stupid? You must be stupid if you're having a hard time surviving on 40,000 a year. I have a relatively easy time surviving on 10,000. I could survive on much less. Your idea of living isn't based on any kind of reality. It's based around some overinflated sense of self-worth.

Go work at mcdonalds. If they're not hiring wait until someone quits or gets fired. It happens quite often.

Ah, now the truth comes out . . . a true, smug, self-serving, entitled Republican.

Just more proof of how foolish it is to align oneself with ANY political party mindset.

texgirl, you're a haughty person with no compassion for the adversities of others. I've known so many people like you and I loathe each and every one of them. You're 45 with the hateful, self-absorbed mentality of someone 30 years older and no, you have no wisdom whatsoever . . . just a cold, discompassionate and terribly misguided way of thinking. I believe people with no compassion will, in some way or another, eventually be taught serious lessons due to their insensivity and arrogance, and all that smirky smugness they hide behind will be of no value.

You lack empathy and can not comprehend other peoples situations. Your way of thinking is antiquated and irrelevant to the current situation. I don't believe I am going to respond to any more of your posts because I will not keep traveling around in your circular reasoning. The world is fucked.

Fantastic.
 Quoting: Skeptically Inclined

Ooooh oooh, my turn!!! I don't even OWN a bread machine and make my bread from scratch too.

Again, missing the point. Can't see the forest for the trees. It's sad to see the older generation become so entrenched in their views they can't see their way out. I raise a glass to all of you who HAVE figured it out.

So, while you are so hung up on the goddamned nickle I mentioned, did you happen to read the rest of what I've been saying?

There, I put the important parts in bold. For emphasis.

Now, if we could have some meaningful dialog addressing these important points, I'll reply, if not, well, I can't teach an old dog new tricks.
 Quoting: Skeptically Inclined

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1309528

 Quoting: Skeptically Inclined

Actually I'm 28, I'm in school for math and physics, I get paid literally 9c an hour from my state school. The tax payers are getting an incredible deal for what we do there, and yes it sucks, its a shitty state school dept run mostly by horrible administrators who DO waste tons of tax payer money while taking advantage of people like me who are truly interested in academic physics.

I have lived independently supporting my self on wage rates from about 4-5 dollars an hour up to 50+ doing a variety of work, and I wanted a higher salary with more interesting work. I put allot of effort into taking the hardest possible classes, and I really enjoy learning and exploring the material I study.

We are in a period of both economic and academic inflation, and I honestly have NO idea what is going to happen in my lifetime. The kinds of events we are going to be forced to deal with are unimaginable. The stuff I'm learning is like the silver and gold of the science and technology world and is in huge demand. I could get a job in almost ANY country in the world.

The academic inflation has allowed millions of people to attend school who otherwise wouldn't be able to participate at all, and while the standards have been lowered, more people able to advance their lives in whatever way they can then ever before, and the opportunities to excel are still there if you are willing to learn the material.

The economic inflation of the dollar has driven the developing world and similarly is allowing hundreds of millions of working people to participate in the world economy in ways never before possible, this inflation also gives us access to cheap a labor and cheap products. The value of the dollar has dropped, but its to the benefit of hundreds of millions of people rising out of REAL abject poverty, and this is a good thing.

Americans have gotten used to a huge amount of wealth and energy for very little productivity, and there is no way to convince people to change their ways other then to force it to happen. Inflation is one of the gentlest ways to change society, wars, real revolutions, and severe natural disasters are all much more severe and painful, and we should be happy that we live in one of the least violent and most productive times in human history.

LOL, I'm not going to itemize my finances for you, but we pay less then 500/mo for rent and that includes heat, I have a car that I use less then once a week, because I'm able walk the 25 min to campus rain, snow or shine. I live in Maine, and I can assure you that there are people around here who make it work on much less, some with families even.

Its very possible to live more then comfortably on very little money. Hell you can collect beer cans in any college town at a rate of about 10$ and hour, in the dorms its more like 25-30, because people are too busy drinking their asses off to clean up their dorm rooms, and when you show up with a giant bag to take their cans away they are more then happy to see you. When I first started college I was able to buy a car this way, it was a cheap, shitty, broken car that I was able to fix, use for a while and then later sell. This is how it's done. Admittedly I'm very good with tools and very resourceful but I think that's what it takes to live on planet earth, or maybe I'm mistaken.

There is no fucking way unless you are getting some help from either the government or your parents.

You say you live with your girlfriend and make it on 14000.

Then map it out so everyone else can see what you spend on what.

Rent, electricity, etc

Location.

Another question comes to mind, how did you get into an apartment without credit? Credit from what I hear puts one into debt...correct me if I wrong!

I paid the first and last months rent plus one months worth of a security deposit with cash when I moved in. I have lived in many different situations, not all of them comfortable, sometimes with way too many house-mates but that's what you do.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!

Agreed,

I live with my girl-friend in a not great but not bad small apartment, and together our yearly expenses have averaged about 14k/year. I don't get money from my parents, in fact we both work when not in school, and we are quite comfortable with our life style.

I don't drink much alcohol, and I'm a vegetarian and those two things alone probably save me thousands of dollars a year.

People in true poverty in third world countries can only ever dream of making 10k a year.

So I take it you never had a medical bill you couldn't pay for? I will assure you if you had you couldn't get into an apartment it would be on your credit report, cash deposits would have been declined and you would have been sent on your way...so the way I'm viewing your situation you're quite Blessed where most aren't! This is just one downfall most encounter there are many more!...But keep thinking positive because one day you may really need it.
