fuck sakes

Im 23. I live in 2011. You people are idiots

You're trying to say that the OPs math somehow reflects upon reality? Are you fucking stupid? You must be stupid if you're having a hard time surviving on 40,000 a year. I have a relatively easy time surviving on 10,000. I could survive on much less. Your idea of living isn't based on any kind of reality. It's based around some overinflated sense of self-worth.

Go work at mcdonalds. If they're not hiring wait until someone quits or gets fired. It happens quite often.

Agreed,

I live with my girl-friend in a not great but not bad small apartment, and together our yearly expenses have averaged about 14k/year. I don't get money from my parents, in fact we both work when not in school, and we are quite comfortable with our life style.

I don't drink much alcohol, and I'm a vegetarian and those two things alone probably save me thousands of dollars a year.

People in true poverty in third world countries can only ever dream of making 10k a year.

Please stop posting how you live on 10,000.

There is no fucking way unless you are getting some help from either the government or your parents.

You say you live with your girlfriend and make it on 14000.

Then map it out so everyone else can see what you spend on what.

Rent, electricity, etc

Location.

LOL, I'm not going to itemize my finances for you, but we pay less then 500/mo for rent and that includes heat, I have a car that I use less then once a week, because I'm able walk the 25 min to campus rain, snow or shine. I live in Maine, and I can assure you that there are people around here who make it work on much less, some with families even.

Its very possible to live more then comfortably on very little money. Hell you can collect beer cans in any college town at a rate of about 10$ and hour, in the dorms its more like 25-30, because people are too busy drinking their asses off to clean up their dorm rooms, and when you show up with a giant bag to take their cans away they are more then happy to see you. When I first started college I was able to buy a car this way, it was a cheap, shitty, broken car that I was able to fix, use for a while and then later sell. This is how it's done. Admittedly I'm very good with tools and very resourceful but I think that's what it takes to live on planet earth, or maybe I'm mistaken.
