Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
This is why I just love these get a job people. And these you should pay cash for a house and car people.

Let say a kid gets out of college with a degree and finds a job or jobs. Right now 40,000 a year would be huge for most to find and probably very unlikely for a graduate, but we will use this number.

So after taxes, ss, state tax if you have one, medical, dental, life, medicare etc

Your bring home is about 1300-1200 every 2 weeks
This is 2600-2400 a month.

Ok let’s pay some bills.

Monthly

Rent 750-Very modest guess. All know some will lower, higher
Car 200- very low cheap car.
Car insurance 100 for decent
150 electricity-- very low for most
50 for gas if you have it.
100 for vehicle gas.

No cable or internet cause we don't want to live to great.
No cell phones because we can't afford this luxury.

Groceries
400 a month.

This is not eating out at all or getting anything from quicky mart. This is very modest considering prices now.

So we are at 1750. From 2600 using the high number this leaves us about 850, but wait. We went to college.

So since we didn't come from rich parents we have to pay for that. Let's say we go to a small cheap school and work part time to pay the room and board.

2000 a semester. Very low price compared to 90%

4 years of school. By the way it is almost impossible to get a 4 year degree anymore, especially while working.

So 4000 a year x 4 years is 16000.

16000 is about a 400 payment a month on student loans.

Now we are up to 2150 - 2600 leaves us about 450 extra.

We are not including any movies, out to eat, up keep on car, pops-candy, lawn care for rent house, medical bills for co-pay, etc.

Hell we will round it up to a big $500 a month extra. Now let’s start saving so we can pay cash and not borrow.

First we need a house and car.

Modest house 150,000. NO LAND besides lot and this probably doesn't exist in price in most places.

So $500 a month savings = $6000 a year.

So it will only take 25 years to save cash for a house at this price.
But wait--in 25 years that house will cost twice that because of inflation.
So 50 years.

Ok let’s get a car.
3 years = 18000 which will buy a piece of shit. These cars normally last 5 years maybe a little more, and they are worth shit nothing when you try to sell them back.

So we get a trade in for $6000 after seven years with the first car we bought. We have to buy a car every 7 years at 18,000.

We will need around 4 cars for the next 28 years, first one being bought for full price. 18000 + 12000 + 12000 + 12000

Hell this is only $54,000. That is another 9 years of saving on top of the 50 for the house. Plus we only figured the cars for 28 years not counting inflation.

So with the math if we started when we are 22 we might have enough cash for a house and keep our cars paid for in cash by the time we are 80 or more.

We won't be able to retire or afford anything else, but by God WE WON’T BE BUMS.

So all you people saying that you pay cash for all your shit and are not in debt are either full of complete shit or came into money somewhere. I suspect most of you got your cash from your momma and you are the true bums. Some of you might have worked your way up the ladder, but at what cost. Some might have built a successful business and are very lucky because if you tried that shit now you would be screwed.

Point being in this long ass post.

Quit blaming these kids. Go get a job is not going to fix shit and you know it. Do the math. Slavery is the end game and they got it.

There are many states in the US where $40K is unimaginable for anyone but an experienced engineer, a doctor, lawyer, realtor, nurse, or very successful businessman. The rest simply try to live within their means. They spend $50 a week for food, if that. They live in a $600 place or share a better place with a partner, spouse, or roommate. They buy a used car for cash ($2000-4000 to start) and buy only required insurance. They get clothes at thrift shops or Target, except maybe a couple of nice outfits for special occasions. They don't have a smart phone. Etc. etc. Cheaper can be done and is being done successfully every day.

Congrats on making it there buddy.

You are absolutly right and a big my bad. I never realized til you posted it how rich many people are.

I guess I just thought the country was in trouble. Hell maybe ALL those people out of a job and in debt are really just lazy bums.

Boy I wish I could just be like you with the ambition to actually think 10,000 is success.

Glad you are saving so much to retire.
Glad you will never have property, aka house or land.
Glad you car is always used and can't be trusted to go very far.

REALLY glad you have no fucking health insurance and I get to pay MORE IN taxes to cover you ER visits.

Glad you will never be educated.

Here is to your success.

No no no. I thank you and all the people with OWS. You have all demonstrated to me just how petty and materialistic this generation is. Thanks for putting it into perspective. I used to complain. I don't even remember why anymore

10,000 is a success. Its 10,000 more than nothing. 45 years worth of ramen.

Dont care about retirement. The concept of retirement is barely a blip on the radar of human history. My parents took care of my grandparents. I will take care of my parents.

Dont care about a house or land. there's thousands upon thousands of acres of land out there for me to explore. I dont have to have any claim to it

My cars are fine. Plenty of people poorer than me with worse cars get by fine.

I educated myself while my peers did homework. Studied what I wanted to study. You can learn in a week what school takes a year to teach you. and you're less likely to forget it

I have health insurance through my job. If I didn't I wouldn't pay for it. False sense of security attempting to run from the inevitable. Doesn't matter
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1733180

God I can't stand lying stupid fucks like you.

You make 10,000 a year and the company you work for has health insurance?

bsflag

If 10,000 is your take home after all this shit is paid, then you are making more than 10,000 stupid.

So at 10,000 you make $5.20 an hour, but you have health.

You are nothing more than a stupid shill and making a case for being a very stupid one at that.

And all you agreeing are just as fucking dumb.
 Quoting: BigNutChuck

My bad. Didn't do the math. 280 a week for 52 weeks is 14560

Id have to cut out 80 dollars a week from my budget at 10,000. Quit cigarettes and get a roommate. Problem solved

point remains. Its completely doable

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
I get some money from loans, some from my own pocket and some from state grants and some from merit based scholarships based on good grades.

I'm very comfortable with my debt, I will be able to pay it off even if my degree does NOTHING to improve my wages from before. Sometimes I have worked part time and only taken one or two classes, so I haven't been able to finish college in four years, but I have never been in a big rush, and I'm NOT in debt up to my eyeballs. In fact I have already started paying some off, and the more regularly I do this the better my credit score will eventually be.

I don't have a credit card and wouldn't want one, and I wouldn't take out a loan for a car when there are so many decent ones around for cheap.

I have a 99 vw wagon that I paid 2k for and do most of the work on myself. Its got 170k, runs like a top, and I can get about 35-37 mpg on the highway from it.

Making it on 40,000. That was the first post and I did a break down of bills and showed how hard it was.

The reason I did this was to show people that times are tough.

You come on here a say you are making it with ONLY 10,000 OR 14,000 A YEAR.

BUT YOUR ARE GETTING LOANS.

If you are getting loans, then you are NOT MAKING IT STUPID. YOU ARE HAVING TO BORROW MONEY.

This would also increase what you have a month to spend and your tuition WOULD BE CONSIDERED A BILL.

Take a finance class
 Quoting: BigNutChuck

Making a living on 10,000 with no debt. Not hard at all. Never had a loan in my life. I already broke it down for you twice but you choose to ignore it or make wrong assumptions about what that sort of life consists of. If you're having a difficult time living on 40,000 you're an idiot. Accept it

You gave a breakdown where you are paying off a house loan, an 18,000 dollar car payment and a 400 dollar a month grocery bill. all of which is completely unrealistic. You say 150 dollars is low for electric. I know people who can get it down to 30. You didn't have to go to college. You didn't have to go to college right after highschool.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1733180

your intitial post was about how hard it is to make it on 40,000. People have repeatedly demonstrated how it is possible to make it on much less. You have ignored and insulted these people. This attitude is what gives power to the corporations. You protest the system while you continue to benefit from it

This shit will just keep on happening until people change.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1733180

I have yet to see anyone repeatedly demonstrate that it is possible to make it on less. I have seen some people CLAIM THEY ARE MAKING IT ON 10,000 OR 14,000 and they have been caught lying.

"MAYBE I OUGHT TO PUT PROSPER INSTEAD OF MAKING IT.
Some of you seem to take making it as survival. NO making it means prospering in America. Making it working and being able to pay cash for shit you need or want."

I have seen several claim how they made it on less BACK IN THE DAY. But times are different, which some of you will never see.

I never said someone could not make it on 40,000, I just said do the fucking math. 40,000 is not what it used to be which WAS MIDDLE CLASS.

YET over and over you people respond and attack that you could survive on less. No shit, so can I, but that wasn't the fucking point.

In the future, IF WE DON'T DO SOMETHING,,, then survival on jack shit nothing will make for great threads because we will ALL BE LIVING IT.

But right now we are living in the United States Of America which is real close, BUT NOT YET A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY!!
 Quoting: BigNutChuck

Why don't you do the math. I told your sorry ass before that I started working in 1982 for $4.25hr ($8840 per year) while the prime rate was 22% and I was not even getting 40hrs a week. I shared a shitbox trailer with a co worker and lived paycheck to paycheck back then. It's fucking called just starting out in the working world, where your stupid ass starts at the bottom and you have to claw yourself up the ladder. I did and now 29 years later I have my own business and plenty of money with all my shit paid off in full. Oh, but you say it was so much easier back the, BULLSHIT.

I feel so fucking sorry that you can't accept the fact you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. Maybe you can move back home where mommy can feed you and powder your ass before you get tucked in for the night.

Ignorance, ignorance.

$40K per year = average total bring home: $32,000K

Tell me that is NOT poverty level FOR ONE PERSON with today's costs.

I'm not going to do the work for you on poverty levels. Do a search.

Monthly take home of $2600
Rent of $600 leaves $2000 (based on apartment in Charlotte, NC)
Used Car (4yr of $6k) at $165 leaves $1835
Car Ins at $75 leaves $1760
Electric at $100 leaves $1660
Water at $40 leaves $1620
Groceries at $400 leaves $1220
Student Loan (10yr of $12k) at $140 leaves $1080
Cable/Internet/Phone at $100 leaves $980
Auto Gas at $100 leaves $880
Throw in a cell phone if you wish.

I guess I am missing where this person lives in poverty.
They have a roof, transportation and substantial food.

And a major misjudgment in the original post numbers.
No one will be making the same salary for 80 years.
Last technician I hired is making $6k more than hire salary from 3 years ago.

And to the person who left the karma... yes, I am entertained.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
$400 for groceries for one person? You have got to be kidding. I feed a family of four on that and we eat very well. You need to rethink how you live.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1550123

A family of four could have eaten quite well on $400 a month back in the sixties and seventies.

A family of four can eat on $400 a month in 2011 . . . but it must be canned tuna, bologna sandwiches, tater tot casserole (a la Duggar family), and hamburger helper.

If you call that quality, ok for you . . . but it is NOT quality living for everyone.

Nope, we know where to buy steaks where we live and know how to crock pot roasts as well. I also know how to cook from scratch and again know how to shop for deals. We also don't eat like overeat and are not overweight. And no canned tuna or none of the other stuff you mentioned is eaten here although I would if I had to. The tater tot casserole does sound good though.LOL Will have to look that one up. Nothing like the midnight munchies.

WalMart sells banquet meals (4 for $5). Eat one for breakfast and one for dinner - skip lunch cuz their fat anyway). that's $2.50/day for meals.

You people are really sad.

You live in AMERICA. A superpower of a nation.

And yet you are content and happy to frigging live in poverty eating WM frozen dinners every day of the month??

Frozen food packed into a PLASTIC container that is then heated up and leeching carcinogens . . . and I'm sure most of you poverty-happy derfwads cook them in microwaves which turns them even more carcinogenic.

But oh yeah, be happy with your pittance of wages . . . as long as you can "get by" no matter the quality of your life . . .

Meant to say we don't overeat. Was going to say something else but changed my mind. Anyway, overeating is killing people and killing their budgets as well. Also the junk food people buy is outrageous. No wonder people can't feed a family for 400 bucks. Ever look in people's shopping carts to see the crap they buy?

Are you at all concerned about feeding your family (and yourself) RED MEAT - which is very unhealthy and is loaded with hormones, not to mention the high incidences of e coli and other assorted bacteria?

It is my belief that the increasing and troubling rates of people being diagnosed with Alzheimer's at younger and younger ages is actually an epidemic of mad cow disease - based on the heavy consumption of tainted beef during the past few decades.

So just because something is economical or affordable and can be stretched through 2 or 3 meals - does not mention it is good for you.

Can a person REALLY find a clean, decent, and safe rental today for $600 . . . in this area, that price would get you a filthy, rundown piece of crap in gang territory.

As I said in my response post for the earnings of minimum wage workers, here it's impossible to find something nice and safe for under $1000 per month.

On the issue of a car - that's assuming one can get credit, to have a monthly car payment. What about those who can't buy a car? They either have to pay cash outright or do without. And in most places in the country, if you don't have a car, you can't get a job.

Electric is a non-negotiable expense - and many people pay as much as $400 plus during peak summer and winter months.

You left out gas, for those who have either all gas or a combo of gas and electric.

The $400 for groceries - assuming that's just for food, what about household supplies, medications and personal items, etc.?

You left out clothing, car maintenance, home maintenance (if the payment is for mortgage instead of rent), and yes, a cell phone would also add to the costs.

We rented a nice house in the foothills of North Carolina for $550 a month last year. There are many places to live In the US that don't cost and arm and a leg if you look for them. And they are not dumps. We recently bought a house and pay less than that for the mortgage.

My rent is $575. Nice place. Great neighbor. I have ALL of my expenses under $1200/month including car payment.

There are low rent districts all over the place in rural america....but you don't get to keep your big city life-style....so sad.

Since nobody has said it yet in this long ass thread, I will say it.

I see posts that tell people unhappy with what has happened to the middle class in this country to be grateful they are better off than a third world peasant, or some such person. Part of the cause why the OWS thing is happening because those people see Americans are going to be miserable if things keep going as they are. Are we to wait until people start building their own shanty towns?

It's a ridiculous way to think.

Great post. Here in Canada car insurance is typically more expensive as well as gas food rent and everything really. Minimum wage is usually ten bucks and its so hard to find something that pays more. Our entire generation is screwed.

I see a lot of post, and I mean A LOT about people saying they are making it.

They are thankful.

They are doing Ok.

Congrats on that.

MY POINT

If you are ok SURVIVING with what you are getting, AND you are OK with all your tax dollars, property, neighbors tax dollars, property going to these corporations, banks, Government, then I don't blame you for defending.

You obviously think that they (Corporations, Banks, Big Pharm, Gov) deserve all they are getting and you deserve ALL YOU ARE GETTING.

It is that mindset that has gotten us into this mess, and IT IS THAT MINDSET THAT WILL COLLAPSE THIS GREAT COUNTRY.

So don't let this post get your blood pressure up. Just go back to watch fox, or cnn and KEEP THINKING EVERYTHING IS
