$400 for groceries for one person? You have got to be kidding. I feed a family of four on that and we eat very well. You need to rethink how you live.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1550123

A family of four could have eaten quite well on $400 a month back in the sixties and seventies.

A family of four can eat on $400 a month in 2011 . . . but it must be canned tuna, bologna sandwiches, tater tot casserole (a la Duggar family), and hamburger helper.

If you call that quality, ok for you . . . but it is NOT quality living for everyone.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3654174

Well, gee, you've proven *you* can't do it.

Congratulations.

I'll bet is isn't very difficult for you to find things that you are incapable of doing.

I'm just guessing.

Fortunately, humanity is chock full o' people who can do more with less than you can.

You obviously think that they (Corporations, Banks, Big Pharm, Gov) deserve all they are getting and you deserve ALL YOU ARE GETTING.

It is that mindset that has gotten us into this mess, and IT IS THAT MINDSET THAT WILL COLLAPSE THIS GREAT COUNTRY.

So don't let this post get your blood pressure up. Just go back to watch fox, or cnn and KEEP THINKING EVERYTHING IS

It MIGHT be possible for people to "survive" on $10K a year, or $32K a year . . . but do you REALLY call that LIVING??

If your standards are such that you don't mind scrimping and savings and struggling every single day of your life, cutting backing, budgeting, eating ramen and tuna, living in a trailer or cramped apartment in a seedy part of town or co-existing with 3 or 4 roommates, then yeah, I guess you'll be fine and dandy and happy with your pittance of wages . . . while the fatcats in DC live it up and laugh at the sheeple over cocktails.

But for those who work hard and barely get by but WANT more and are ANGRY as hell at what's happened to America and the dream . . . then for them, this thread means something.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
I get some money from loans, some from my own pocket and some from state grants and some from merit based scholarships based on good grades.

I'm very comfortable with my debt, I will be able to pay it off even if my degree does NOTHING to improve my wages from before. Sometimes I have worked part time and only taken one or two classes, so I haven't been able to finish college in four years, but I have never been in a big rush, and I'm NOT in debt up to my eyeballs. In fact I have already started paying some off, and the more regularly I do this the better my credit score will eventually be.

I don't have a credit card and wouldn't want one, and I wouldn't take out a loan for a car when there are so many decent ones around for cheap.

I have a 99 vw wagon that I paid 2k for and do most of the work on myself. Its got 170k, runs like a top, and I can get about 35-37 mpg on the highway from it.

Making it on 40,000. That was the first post and I did a break down of bills and showed how hard it was.

The reason I did this was to show people that times are tough.

You come on here a say you are making it with ONLY 10,000 OR 14,000 A YEAR.

BUT YOUR ARE GETTING LOANS.

If you are getting loans, then you are NOT MAKING IT STUPID. YOU ARE HAVING TO BORROW MONEY.

This would also increase what you have a month to spend and your tuition WOULD BE CONSIDERED A BILL.

Making a living on 10,000 with no debt. Not hard at all. Never had a loan in my life. I already broke it down for you twice but you choose to ignore it or make wrong assumptions about what that sort of life consists of. If you're having a difficult time living on 40,000 you're an idiot. Accept it

You gave a breakdown where you are paying off a house loan, an 18,000 dollar car payment and a 400 dollar a month grocery bill. all of which is completely unrealistic. You say 150 dollars is low for electric. I know people who can get it down to 30. You didn't have to go to college. You didn't have to go to college right after highschool.

Another option is working for a University that offers credit hrs. for work hours. You work for them in any position and get paid a decent wage. In addition, you earn credit hours for free education. Takes some initiative, working and taking classes in the evenings, or weekends, but it's a way to get an education without going into debt.

 Quoting: WalkersEverywhere

No it isn't.

It's easy to say - or perhaps even to somehow believe - that you can "make it" . . . and of course, everyone needs optimism . . . but just saying you can "make it" on $15K does NOT equate (to people with high standards) to successful, quality living.

I again ask people here to THINK about the numbers.

Crunch them, add it up, be reasonable in your assessment - and you will see that these kinds of wages are a pittance - in a nation that considers itself to be all powerful and advanced and progressive.

NO ONE in America should be living at poverty level.

Until we stop funding the world, America will continue to crumble into oblivion . . . and millions will suffer while TPTB just give away their money.

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
we must all remember that if the banks played by the rules (of LAW) we would not be in this finaical problem. they got overly greedy changed laws after the fact, even flat out stoled money from you , and other countries. the other countries called the banks on the theft and the US goverment bailed the banks out. then left we the people with the tab (no the banks did not really pay back the TARP and 0% loans all back) and the fake morguages.
then pile on the fact that the US goverment has to go to a group of private bankers to even create a simple $1.00 bill at $1.00 plus any interest the bankers want, plus the printing cost. We the people will be ensalved for ever and our childern and thier childern.
This is not how our country was founded. the founding father had fought a war the end this same principle. really folks wake up. read the consitution find out where the money is to come from by the consitution.
read up on A. jackson!, G washington, hell T. Jefferson said it to.

IF THE BANKS CREATE 10 MARBELS AND GIVE THEM TO YOU AT INTEREST. YOU PUT THE 10 MARBELS IN YOUR TIN CUP. LATER THE BANKS ASK FOR 11 MARBELS YOU LOOK IN THE TIN CUP AND SAY THERE ARE ONLY 10 MARBELS. THE BANKS GET MAD TAKE THE 10 MARBELS AND THE TIN CUP. AND STILL SAY YOU OWE 2 MORE MARBELS FOR THE INTEREST AND A FINE.
GOOD LUCK. AND GET A JOB ha ha ha

Tell me about it, i am paying around $1000.00 a month for a $100k 30 year mortgage.

I closed on the house in 2000(don't remind me of the rate).

By the time it is paid off, they will have collected well over $300k out of me.

I have tried to refinance to get a better rate, but they have denied my request several time because of one late payment.

It boggles the mind the way these crooks work.

Ok you are making it.

Give details please?

Do you have a place to live---buy or rent?

Do you have a loan if you bought?

Do you have a vehical and if so buy or rent?

Do you have a retirement plan besides SS?

Do you have medical?

Do you have a medical plan for later if medicare goes bust?

Is this take home or gross?

Not being a dick for once, but asking real questions.

Are you surviving making it, or are you really able to handle the above on 15000.

No, you don't understand the concept of this thread.

If you are a legal American citizen, and if you have ever had to worry about money and security and retirement, if you've worked hard but still have to budget and scrimpt, if you HATE what the government has done and continues to do to legal, taxpaying citizens . . . you would understand.

Judging by your posts, you are likely a wealthy/privileged and close-minded, hardcore republican who has no concept of the things I've just mentioned.

I don't give a damn about liberal vs. conservative vs. whoever . . . I care about fairness and common sense and LOYALTY to one's own people, something the American government is NOT.

It's so easy for the "haves" to look down their noses at the peon "have nots" . . . inevitably, it means the haves never lived as a have not and therefore, have no appreciation of the TRUE value of a dollar and how fleeting things in life can be.

Yes

The problem is contentment. It's the people who are satisfied making their living off of very little. Thats what got us into this mess. Thats what put the greedy corporations in power

It was people cutting back on their spending. It was the people budgetting. It was the people rejecting a life of debt. They brought this on

Living off of 10,000 dollars isn't really living. no nice car, no nice house, no nice clothes... Nothing to tell the world "look at me! look how succesful I am!". You have to work in order to eat. What the hell is that? When in the history of forever has anybody had to do something so degrading as to work in order just to eat and provide shelter for themselves?

and live with another person? WTF? You must be operating under the fallacy that humans are naturally social creatures and sometimes need to rely on eachother to live. Who would do that?

Im 23 y'all. I cant be living in a trailer. where am I gonna keep all my stuff? Im not tryin to eat where I cook ya know? and trailers aint got dining rooms

No nice house, no nice car...no girlfriend...no wife...no disposable income...nothing to look forward to.

It causes a nasty ripple effect. In some parts of the country 10k means no car and no shelter.

If you lived with a bunch of room mates (no better than an illegal alien) how could you meet a woman? How could you start a family? How can anyone be expected to be happy when having so little money makes it so they cannot better themselves?

You obviously think that they (Corporations, Banks, Big Pharm, Gov) deserve all they are getting and you deserve ALL YOU ARE GETTING.

It is that mindset that has gotten us into this mess, and IT IS THAT MINDSET THAT WILL COLLAPSE THIS GREAT COUNTRY.

So don't let this post get your blood pressure up. Just go back to watch fox, or cnn and KEEP THINKING EVERYTHING IS

I have to disagree. Even if girls are broke they expect a man to have money and spend it on things like houses, private schools for the kids, and other stuff. A lot of times, making less than a certain amount ensures guys will remain without a life mate.

As for bettering oneself, you need to put away money to buy property and for other investments. In your other post you claim to put six thousand a year away in savings while using only four thousand for costs of living. You only listed a vehicle and food as an expense. What about mortgage/rent, insurance and all those other things? Just telling it like it is. Maybe in Mexico ten thousand a year is doable.

Depends on what the woman values in life. If her values are reflective of mine it wouldn't be an issue

You dont need to buy property

that post above was suggesting that you can live out of a van. and have freedom most cant imagine

my whole argument in this thread is that everybody is chasing after things that aren't important and really just complicate life. corporations have exploited this forever. So if you want to stop being abused by the system dont be a part of it

The hypocricy of this movement is that they dont realize they're asking for more of the same

The worst thing that could happen to a business man is if no one wanted their product. but people just keep asking for more

take 1000 of that

buy a diesel van

take another 1000

convert your diesel to run off of grease

take 2000 and save it for food

put 6000 into savings

enjoy early retirement. Travel the world!

It DOES have a great deal to do with location, something these posters have not considered for a second when they say how easy it is for someone to live on 10K a year.

But I contend there is NO WAY that a decent, clean-cut, intelligent person could live a decent, respectable life ANYWHERE in America on that kind of money.

If a person took home $10K a year, that means they have $833 a month for ALL expenses.

NO WAY. Not in America. Not if you've got any sense of decency and self-respect.

Yeah, you would have to live out of you car to get along on that. Put away six thousand a year in savings under the car seat. In twenty years you could buy a house for one hundred and twenty thousand dollars if you can get one that cheap. Of course, there is more expense than just the price.

decency and self-respect is dependent upon how much money a person makes... by that logic the wall street folks must be the most decent self-respecting lot on the planet

leave em be guys! They're decent self-respecting people!

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
The point of the thread was to explain why people go into debt. Most people would like to own property and raise a family. That would be impossible to do without going into some kind of debt. The real problem is things cost more than they should. If they didn't then people would be able to afford them without crippling debt.
