Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
The point of the thread was to explain why people go into debt. Most people would like to own property and raise a family. That would be impossible to do without going into some kind of debt. The real problem is things cost more than they should. If they didn't then people would be able to afford them without crippling debt.
...

It DOES have a great deal to do with location, something these posters have not considered for a second when they say how easy it is for someone to live on 10K a year.

But I contend there is NO WAY that a decent, clean-cut, intelligent person could live a decent, respectable life ANYWHERE in America on that kind of money.

If a person took home $10K a year, that means they have $833 a month for ALL expenses.

NO WAY. Not in America. Not if you've got any sense of decency and self-respect.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3771536

Yeah, you would have to live out of you car to get along on that. Put away six thousand a year in savings under the car seat. In twenty years you could buy a house for one hundred and twenty thousand dollars if you can get one that cheap. Of course, there is more expense than just the price.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1578698

20 years? thats it? It took my folks 40 years with interest on a loan. Whats your point again?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1733180

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1578698

yes

thats why people go into debt. Cause they want things they cant afford. because their expectations are not based in reality. Because they wont do what it takes to get what they want without borrowing from other people. Because they dont have patience. Because they wont consider a hotdog stand when they can borrow money and open up an olive garden

the people who sell the things get to decide how much the things cost. The people who buy the things get to decide whether its worth the money or not. That is a fair transaction

ahahahah!

decency and self-respect is dependent upon how much money a person makes... by that logic the wall street folks must be the most decent self-respecting lot on the planet

leave em be guys! They're decent self-respecting people!

please. by all means, go back to occupying some homeless persons would-be bed with a tent and donated food and talk about oppression and unfair treatment
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1733180

Wrong, derf.

That is YOUR (false) interpretation.

I say that NO decent person with a degree of self-respect wants to live in a frigging tent or a shelter or their car or in some crummy place with 3 or 4 roommates!

Therefore, there is NO WAY that a decent person with a sense of self-respect could live happily on $10K a year.

Period.

I hate obtuse people.

Ya know they're still pimping out the american dream on commercials

why?

cause people buy into it

Its a lie

it has never existed

There has never been any american dream. Never. It was a lie they sold to you and you bought into it

and now you say the american dream is dead? Good. Back to the realm of nonexistence where lies belong

They sold you a lie. and if you payed attention you would realize that they're selling this revolution to you as well

always the same. You need this. Other people have it and you need it. You wont be happy without it. You deserve better. You're funny and attractive and nice and everybody likes you!

That's $833 a month take home . . .

Tell me how ANY decent person is HAPPY with that?

I call FOUL to anyone who claims they are HAPPY living on sub-poverty wages!!!

It is my opinion that no one in America can live in decent conditions on that kind of money . . . and anyone who is exisitng on that kind of money and claiming they are happy are people with sub-low standards, no sense of decency, no concern about hygiene or safety, etc.

There is a profound difference between "existing" and "living" . . . everyone's concept of "happiness" is different, but even if you define happiness as waking up each morning and getting through the day, you STILL have to pay bills and deal with all the complex realities of everyday life in America . . . and I do not believe that anyone can do that on $833 and have a quality, truly happy and fulfilled life.

I understand the point you're making, except using the term, "decent". By those standards, if we knew a person's income, and could determine their level of happiness, we could gauge whether or not a person was decent without knowing anything else about them.

Don't you think there's more to being a decent person than an income? It bothers me wondering how many people feel the same way, and if/when they lose their job or income, they'll lose their self esteem and decide to do something desperate.

Maybe I'm making too much of it, but it begs the question,
if they are making 10 K and are miserable, sad, and enraged, does that make them a more decent person?

Like it or not, this is America, and you are judged by money, property, and status in life.

You will be treated like trash if you live the way AC- xxxxx80 suggests. You will not find a girl. You will not have a family. You will be deemed an undesirable and will be largely avoided by others.

I hope you are wrong, but fear you may be right. It would be nice to think that people would make decisions about others based on their character, kindness, compassion, and moral values.

Maybe as more people lose their jobs/homes/income and are thankful for a van to have shelter, it will become the norm, rather than the exception. People that have been doing it will be miles ahead in knowing what to do and how to do it.

Maybe our tendency to put so much importance on objects, money, and status will be replaced by appreciation for the person. Maybe we'll even learn to show kindness, gratitude, and compassion. Doubtful, but there's a chance.

The use of the word "decent" is being overplayed here . . .

I am NOT saying that a person who makes pittance wages is not a decent person. There are some good and honorable people who work hard, who want to do better, but just can't make big money.

But the word "decent" and its variants implies a certain standard of living, including morals, ethics, values, etc.

The REAL point of my posts (which is going over most posters' heads here) is that anyone who brings home $833 a month and claims that THEY and EVERYONE else CAN and SHOULD be able to live on that and be HAPPY, contented, etc. . . . cannot, by definition, be a decent person living in decent conditions.

I personally don't consider the idea of a person having to live in some crummy place in a crime-ridden area to be "decent" conditions . . . nor would I consider having multiple roommates as being "decent" conditions.

If someone thinks otherwise, it's their right . . . but don't tell ME or anyone else that WE should agree that such conditions are acceptable and that our standard of living should be lowered because that's just how it is America.

The REAL problem is that this nation is filled with too many people who are actually WILLING to play the role of mindless slaves/drones WITHOUT balking.

Look, "we the people" has lost all meaning . . . there's jolly little any of us can do anymore, but there ARE people who are smart enough to see the bigger picture of what is going down in America and that the little people are being screwed over and used as mere pawns, and those smart people are the ones who protest - NOT in the idiot ways of the OWS trash - but in productive ways, they are the ones who speak out, who write about it, who try in some way to spread the message that legal American citizens MUST and SHOULD demand better.

Thanks for explaining your definition of "decent".

Sometimes, the people living on less than what some would call "acceptable," are doing their own quiet protest and have found happiness along the way. They may have more peace than someone working 80 hrs. a week in pursuit of happiness.

It's questionable if we can ever change someone else, but
we can change ourselves or how we feel about a situation.

I greatly admire someone who can be happy with less than what many consider an acceptable income. I think it's awesome. hf

Nine's, I'm guessing you're over 60 . . . and on some level, I understand your somewhat naive postings - it's a kind of "can't we just all get along and be happy" kind of thinking. Nothing wrong with that, except it just doesn't wash in 2011. Sad, but true.

NO, NO, NO, I'm not at all suggesting it would be good for more people to live in vans. I'm saying that the way things are going, there will be more people out of homes and jobs, and if they had nothing, a van would be great, compared to nothing. And we should treat people better.

No problem . . .

Nine's, I'm guessing you're over 60 . . . and on some level, I understand your somewhat naive postings - it's a kind of "can't we just all get along and be happy" kind of thinking. Nothing wrong with that, except it just doesn't wash in 2011. Sad, but true.

lol You're guessing I'm over 60 because I'm a computer illiterate, not because you think I'm naive. 8)

Yeah, I do wish we could all just get along and be happy. rose

Re: Why don't you do the math before you tell these kids to not borrow money-- or get a job!
The mods never pin threads based on calculations, they pin gibberish and bullshit.
This thread deserves a pin, cause this is the life the so called 99% are living. Where am I supposed to get a fucking job with my engineering degree? I got laid off and now I'm working in Taco-bell for 9.5 bucks an hour!
Fucking bullshit...

NO, NO, NO, I'm not at all suggesting it would be good for more people to live in vans. I'm saying that the way things are going, there will be more people out of homes and jobs, and if they had nothing, a van would be great, compared to nothing. And we should treat people better.

I DO agree everyone should be kinder . . . but I've become enough of a realist to know that's not going to happen. Society is too corrupt, too compromised.

But your post seemed to imply that if things get so bad that more and more will have to live in vans, then they will learn to be kinder and better people. And I just don't think that would happen. Humans have devolved to the point where fewer understand the meaning of decorum and decency and goodness.

No not all . . . lol . . . my guess of age was based on your posts wherein you use the little heart and flower icon and you talk about people being nice and getting along. I think that's something a person in the range of 50 - 65 would be more likely to post . . . just my opinion.

I agree that this thread should be pinned. I've followed it since it was first posted.

Ok now, weigh in with your personal opinions . . .

You say you have an engineering degree, but you're having to work at TB for $9.50 an hour . . . if you're working 40 hours, you're probably taking home somewhere around $1,200 a month which = $14,400 annually.

Now . . . obviously you aspired to more and you were somehow able to go to college and get a degree and I'm sure you expected to be reaping the rewards of those years spent in school getting said degree.

So can you say that you are HAPPY with what you are making right now? Are you able to live in a manner consistent with what you want and are comfortable with?

And do you think EVERYONE should be able to live well on what you're making AND that they should be happy and just accept it?

Is it right that millions of people just accept minimum and slight above wages . . . while the bankers and CEOs take home 7, 8, even 9-figure salaries per year and while the elected politicians take home hefty salaries with full benefits and perks?

What I very unsuccessfully tried to say was that if it were the norm, rather than the exception, there would be few to look down on those who are now in vans. Not for a minute do I wish that to happen, but do fear that it's in the future of many, many people.

People do seem to have devolved, and it's doubtful that some would be grateful to have a van over nothing. More likely rage, that they no longer have their home, or can't buy a home.

There's already a lot of rage. Young, old, and in between.
All with their own set of problems, and all blaming someone else.

You're right. Things won't work out well, but we can make some small difference by helping those we can, and at least trying to understand those we can't help.

I guess it would make you mad for me to say at least you have a job, and many don't? Do you by any chance have a van? hiding
