""This was a very, very bad situation," County sheriff Matt Lutz told a news conference. "These animals were on the move, and they were showing aggressive behaviour."

I told my husband last night, I bet the guy was either militia or a vet and that ATF went after his guns.

If he was under house arrest, how could he get to the animals to care for them? Perhaps he figured with no one to care for them, he may as well turn them loose and without any of his former life left, he turned the gun on himself, or did he?

""In the summer of 2010, an animal caretaker was killed by a bear at a property in Cleveland. The caretaker had opened the bear's cage at exotic-animal keeper Sam Mazzola's property for a routine feeding.
Though animal-welfare activists had wanted Mazzola charged with reckless homicide, the caretaker's death was ruled a workplace accident. The bear was later destroyed.
This summer, Mazzola was found dead on a water bed, wearing a mask and with his arms and legs restrained, at his home in Columbia Township, about 15 miles southwest of Cleveland.""

Tonya Shipley: Summary: Sheriff Matt Lutz addressed the issue of shooting the animals throughout the day. He tried to express to people exactly the situation they were up against. He said they had a case where one of the vets - who he said was braver than him - approached one of the tigers in order to use the tranquilizer on it, but once it was shot it went crazy and bolted from them. Once it did, the officers had to shoot it.
Many animals were killed Tuesday but hadn't been accounted for completely as they were recovering the bodies today.
Lutz said people needed to understand they weren't dealing with small animals. Some of these were 300 pounders.
Jack Hanna backed up the sheriff's use of force. He said people need to understand how dangerous this situation could have been if these animals had gotten out into neighborhoods.
He told a couple of stories including how he saw a bengal tiger take down a 2,000 pound water buffalo once. He told a more personal story about how a friend's child had his arm torn off by an animal.
He told these stories to try to convey to people that this wasn't done with malice but with safety in mind. He too expressed sadness over the whole situation and especially for the officers that would have to go home tonight and tell their children they shot and killed these animals.

They tried but it isn't safe at night.. one of the articles said that one tiger over reacted (that happens too) and then had to be shot! This was horrible and I am sure someone will pay for this.. the owner had just been released from prison and had prior animal abuse convictions! What a mess!

just because one over reacted doesnt mean they all will, they are wild animals not pets. i think bango tigers are endangered arent they?

I live just north of Zanesville! I'm telling you there is something NOT RIGHT with this story!

This man knew what these animals were capable of! He DID NOT CUT OPEN SOME THE CAGES, then kill himself. Come on people!

My guess is he caught someone (animal rights people?) in the act of cutting open the cages and fences. He probably tried to stop them. They killed him, got his keys to free the other animals, then put the keys back on his body! Hello???

AND THIS JUST IN...

Tonya Shipley: Summary: More on Terry Thompson from a Times Recorder 2008 article

Terry Thompson, 59, of 270 Kopchak Road, had representatives from the Columbus Zoo and the Muskingum County Humane Society on his property in June after they received complaints about the condition and treatment of the numerous tigers, lions, bears, horses and other exotic and domestic animals on the property.
Officials with the Federal Division of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were also at Thompson's home that day, but neither Thompson nor federal officials will discuss why.
"I think people don't fully understand the situation," Thompson said as he stood in front of an enclosure housing two of his lions, who immediately rubbed against the cage urging him to pet them. "People are quick to scrutinize me when they really have no idea of what I'm about or why I have chosen to have these animals."
Prosecutor Michael Haddox said after a complete and extensive investigation by the Muskingum County Sheriff's Office, no charges will be filed against Thompson.
"We had several experts out at the Thompson place including a number of veterinarians and even experts from the Columbus Zoo and they found nothing wrong," Haddox said. "I'm not going to tell you that the animals out there are taken care of like you or I might take care of one of our pets, but there is no one that can say their conditions are violating any statutes of law."

More from that article:
Haddox said there were concerns regarding the cages some of the animals were in.
"We had a safety concern and Lt. Steve Welker told Mr. Thompson that he wanted some of the cages higher and some of the cages needed tops on them. Those issues have been taken care of to Welker's satisfaction, I've been told."
All the animals are behind steel cages re-enforced with double locks. Some of the cages are 12-feet high and most have tops.
"The sheriff's office asked me to take some added precautions with some of my enclosures and that's what we did," Thompson said.

More from that article:

Haddox said when researching the problem at the Thompson home, he discovered there are little to no laws regulating exotic animals in Ohio.
"I know exotic animal ownership has blossomed here in the last several years," Haddox said. "We just couldn't find any laws that say someone can't own an exotic animal."
Haddox believes state legislators should take a close look at the issue as more and more residents are purchasing animals.
Thompson agreed that people don't understand but doesn't think the laws need to be changed.
"I have them because I love them and am willing to do whatever I have to to take care of them," Thompson said. "I have seven veterinarians on call at any time. If one of my bears gets a hangnail, I call a certain vet. If a cat sneezes, I call another vet. I don't use the animals for commerce, so I'm under no regulations like a zoo. But I make sure my animals aren't a threat to the community, either."
Thompson said he didn't just jump into owning exotics before thinking it through.
"But until you follow in my footsteps, don't judge me," Thompson said.

More proof the system is broken beyond repair. A guy who has committed no crime is sentenced to federal prison in Amerika ....

While BANKER scum walk off with billions.

Justice has been served.

THIS IS REPORTER TONYA SHIPLEY WHO IS REPORTING ON TWITTER FEED...

Tonya Shipley: From an Oct 2010 Times Recorder story on Terry Thompson being sentenced on gun charges:

U.S. District Judge Algenon L. Marbley looked as if he was struggling Friday morning with exactly what sentence to give a Zanesville man who pleaded guilty to two federal counts of possessing illegal firearms.

Marbley finally decided on sentencing Terry Thompson, 62, to one year and one day in federal prison, ordered him to be on house arrest for a year after his release. In addition, he was ordered to complete 208 hours of community service, either working with children or animals, within a year of his release.

Thompson entered guilty pleas to the federal charges in April and faced up to 10 years in prison.

But Marbley told Thompson before sentencing that he had to weigh the seriousness of the crime and Thompson's background and personal history.

Thompson was charged after agents with Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms served a search warrant at Thompson's home on Kopchak Road in 2008. At that time, the ATF seized 133 weapons and a small amount of ammunition. Thompson's conviction centered on eight of those guns -- five fully automatic firearms and three short-barreled firearms without serial numbers. Thompson was formerly a gun dealer who did not renew his license several years ago.

Marbley did eject one other gun from the case Friday, a Japanese gun that was manufactured to shoot flares. Marbley disagreed with Assistant U.S. Attorney David Bosley, who along with an agent from the ATF, told Marbley the gun could be fitted to shoot 12-gauge shotgun shells.

Thompson, who despite having a broken right arm in a sling, stood at attention, said the gun, a souvenir from his father from World War II, along with another gun, were antiques and were meant as heirlooms that eventually would be passed to a nephew.

The guns were discovered in a storage chest in the basement of Thompson's home the day ATF served the warrant. They had been taken from Thompson's father's home before the home was demolished two years ago.

Marbley said it came as a surprise to him that Thompson has a history of being a businessman, a pilot and a Vietnam veteran.

"You've essentially been a law-abiding citizen," Marbley said. "You seem to be a very intelligent, which may have got you into this trouble."

What is curious about this is that he was a dealer who had failed to renew his license. It almost seems like they had other problems with him but this was the only thing they could effectively charge him with. Typically, i think they would have just made him renew the license or hand over the guns.

Also, he had ver little ammo. A gun without ammo is just a hunk of metal & wood, making it a rather clumsy club at best.

More than meets the eye here.

"Summary: Here is where we stand - two animals still on the loose - a monkey and wolf."

They'll never be caught. The monkey and the wolf have been training together. The monkey is going to ride the wolf north, and change wolves in Wyoming, where the wolf is going to pick up a badger and go east. The wolf is going to dye his hair and assume the identity of a German Shepard, using the badger as a cover story that they are filming a Disney adventure, while the monkey is going to shave and run in the Democrat Congressional primary in North Dakota, where he'll win.
